BIOSHOCK - Gen. Discussion & Info
New BioShock DLC and update coming next week (Plasmids included):
http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/50153
Sweet!! Here's the press release for the lazy:

Publisher 2K Games sends word that a few BioShock patches will be released next week, in addition to a free downloadable content pack for the hit game.

2K community manager Elizabeth Tobey tells Shacknews that the DLC will at least include extra plasmids for players to mess around with, a way to disable Vita-Chambers for hardcore play, and bug fixes.

The patches will also address the game's field-of-vision perspective, following an intense bout of controversy over the way BioShock handles its widescreen display.

A title update to the Xbox 360 version will be released alongside the DLC, while the PC patch will come bundled with the content.

Sounds pretty sweet, especially the fact that the DLC will be free. I wonder how the new plasmids will be added to a player like myself who is currently midway through the game. Will they be available at all Gatherer's Gardens from the point when the DLC is installed? And will these plasmids affect the achievements that I have yet to get (i.e. all plasmids)? Hmmmm.

I haven't been following this thread much but I think that this game ranks No. 1 of my list for GOTY. Thoughts?

PS - I see the irony of posting GOTY ideas in the Bioshock thread ...

i think bioshock is a great game and incredibly well done, but so are a lot games this season. i'd probably say rockband may take it instead.

No Way is rockband better than Bioshock. Its fun but its not GOTY material like Bioshock is.

Anyway to answer your earlier question triforcer, you still have to buy the tier 2 tonics to get the Tonic Collector achievement. Keep in mind that some of the tonics will compound each other, meaning that if you have electric flesh equipped with static shock 2&3, pretty much anybody that ever touches you is dead meat, well-done.

I had orange box as my GOTY, but after I beat bioshock, I would say it takes the crown. Great story, its up there with KOTOR for me, and one of the best atmospheres I have ever seen in a game. One of those every couple years game.

After the news of the DLC, watch me do the Boogaloo.

Couldn't have come at a better time, too...I'm taking advantage of the GS "Employee Appreciation Weekend" (25% off instead of standard 15) and grabbing a bunch of games, this one among them.

Great story, great ending, great gameplay. Haven't seen a game other than this where they pay so much attention to small details. I don't think its going to win GOTY, but it should.

It's absolutely my game of the year, and really the first game this year that just took control of my gaming and I laid back and accepted it.

Wow. I haven't played videogames until 2 a.m. in like 10 years. I played about 4 hours straight last night and I got pretty far. I also got a ton of achievements
- I completed my research, I maxed out all tracks and got the Sander Cohen achievements. I have over 700 ADAM but I'm afraid to spend it improperly... I also was surprised about the whole "would you kindly" thing - didn't see that coming... great story...

Ya, the "would you kindly" thing knocked me out of my chair, after that I was like wow this story is awesome. I know the Atlis thing was going to happen, but I never saw that coming.
Hey allright Jav, way to go! So what did you think? Regarding beating the game
what ending did you get?
I haven't finished it yet!
I'm pretty sure I'm headed for the "good" one since I've saved every Little Sister so far. Also, what's the deal with Fontaine's mind control shrinking my health? I haven't bought any eve or health upgrades but now my health meter is way lower than my eve meter... One solid hit from a Big Daddy takes me out.
I wanted to finish it last night but I guess I'm really getting old - my 2 a.m. session on Friday night killed me last night - I fell asleep on the couch at 10 p.m.!!

i knew something with atlas was going on too, i did notice atlas saying that a lot, but i thought that was just his irish way of speaking.

I really didnt notice it until it was pointed out to me, then in recollection I remembered that it was said alot.

Regarding gettin your health back, feel free to go ahead and spend some of that adam on two health upgrades. Eventually the sapping stops. Just keep pressing forward. If you have more than 200 adam left over at any given time you're saving too much and should get to spending some of it on tonics plasmids upgrades in that order.

Well, I'm on the last level. I saved before starting it but it looks pretty big so I'm guessing I'll be playing it over 2 or 3 nights. I actually have a work function tonight so I won't be leaving NYC until at least 10 p.m. which likely means I won't play at all tonight.
I did manage to snag two more achievements - upgrade 5 weapons (I found my 10th Power to the People machine) and Avid Inventor (I finally hit 100 things invented).

I also haven't taken the time to do an audio diary inventory although I'm 100% positive I got the "one time only" ones. Maybe I'll print out a checklist right now...

Also, I have 42 out of 50 achievements yet I only have about 550 achievement points. That seems a little... off. I only expect to get 900 though since I'm not playing on Hard. I don't have 1,000 points on any game yet so maybe I'll replay to try and snag the last 100 achievement points (the extra one doesn't sound remotely fun to try and get).

I'm torn on which game to play next - Mass Effect or CoD4. I have them both in my possession...

Damn, deciding what to play next ME or COD4 is a dilemma I wish I had. Bioshock is the only game I've ever gotten 1000/1000, I'm by no means and achievement whore but with this game I figured I would try to do it once. When they added another after I sent it back I was pissed but ces la vie.

Anyway nice to have that inventor Ach out of the way, did you get Weapon's Specialist? I forget how many PtP machines there were but all are reaccessable and its a fairly easy ach.

Regarding diary hunting, if you're sure you got hte reaccessible ones, I found the best way was to (1) press start and check your diary log for the first area, (2) count them up, some areas are grouped so take this into acct (3) in an internet browser open up both a diary FAQ and a detailed walkthrough (I reccommend Nimerjim's on IGN) (4) compare and contrast to find which you have, which your missing. (5) Go to the area listed in broad diary FAQ, if you cant find it, use Ctrl +F and search the detailed walkthrough for a more detailed explan of its location. Keep in mind (this may save you like an hour) that one of the diaries (i forget where, sorry) the log misplaces in your log screen under a different location than where its actually located. I searched for like an hour only to eventually find out on GameFAQs that this one diary was misplaced in the log under a different area; basically I was searchign for about 45 minutes for a diary i already had.

Is there a recommended sequence on which power-up slots to fill up first? I've got one left to get in the plasmid slot, one left in the combat, and a few to get in the engineering and physical. Is it even possible to fill them up in one playthrough?

Yes you can, you just can't get all the plasmids and all the slots (all plasmids is another achievement).

THat doesn't sound wrong to me

When I completed the game I got the most achievements points I had in one day, somehthing like 300 points right at the end)

Definitely. I filled them all up a few hours of playtime ago (I think I was in Hephaestus when I maxed out all tracks). Not sure about a recommended order although I like the physical ones better than the engineering ones.

I think I fucked up with this one. For some reason, I was under the impression that I needed to purchase all plasmids and all tonics, along with all slots for both plasmids and tonics. It sounds like in reality, I was supposed to just buy up all the slots and then all the tonics, without worrying about buying every plasmid. Is that right?

I just made it to Olympus Heights yesterday, and I'm thinking that I probably won't be able to get one or both of those achievements. I haven't been focusing on buying every available plasmid, but I probably have more than I needed in the first place. Any idea if I'll have enough Adam from the remaining Little Sisters for those slots and tonics that I still need?

Yes it is possible (and probable if you're conscious of it) to get all slots unlocked; there is plenty of adam to do it. You should do this anyway especially with combat and physical tonics, engineering tonics are badass too b/c they can give you health and eve and make Hacking sooo much easier. At the beginning at least, and really throughout the game, you usually have more tonics than slots to put em in so I never understood why ppl wouldnt go for max all slots first since you have wasted/unused tonics in your inventory.

There is not an achievement for getting all of the plasmids in the game. Whoever said that is flat out wrong. You should get most of them by nature, but I never got some of the second level ones and I got 100% of the achs.

FYI:

Many of you have been asking me about the status of the BioShock PC Patch and Xbox 360 Title Update, and I have some good news for you.
Both the BioShock PC Patch and the 360 Title Update will be available next week. In addition to these fixes, we will be releasing downloadable content free on both Xbox Live and for the PC, with the DLC bundled into the PC Patch. A full list of bug fixes and everything included in the DLC will be put up on the Cult of Rapture when the downloads become available.

DLC is supposed to be new plasmids. I'm glad I haven't finished the game, this way with the DLC I'll be able to have fun with it the first go around instead of replaying it just to test it out.

Err ya, that's my bad. I meant all the tonics, not all the plasmids. It's been a while since I played.

The DLC is supposed to also include a default hard play through with the chambers shut off. That should make the new 100 point achievement for having a play through without them easier.

- 100 point achievement for beating game without Vita Chamber called "Brass Balls"
How to do it:
Must beat game on Hard
Must not use a Vita Chamber (you can always roll back to an earlier save)
The Vita Chamber Disabled option can be on or off as long as you don’t resurrect

That sounds pretty cool as long as its free. I can't see myself paying even 400 points just for some new plasmids and a new vitachamber setting.
it should be out this week it is free to all
Free, now that's what I like to hear. :applause: A link to this news would be good also.

Hopefully my non-Vita-Chamber on Hard Save will work for the achievement, and they won't make me run through the whole game again for it. If not, I'll play through again. It's a great game!

Hell yes. Downloaded the content just now, and can't wait to play through Bioshock again...only downside is that it's finals week next week, and I've still gotta finish Mass Effect and try out Condemned to see if I want to keep it.

This time, I'm gonna give Bioshock the time it deserves...not like I didn't last time, but I'm going to make sure I explore every nook and cranny.

The non-vita chamber achievement seems ridiculous to me - and impossiblly frustrating. The first Big Daddy killed me like 5 times before I was able to bring it down. Even now that my character is fully powered up I find splicers very tough to deal with at the end of the game.... maybe I just suck.

I went full on wrench and about halfway through the game everything except big daddies became a cake walk. Even then i was able to sometimes kill big daddies with my wrench depending on my shock/ice going off at the right time.

but yeah, early on, before there is a lot of plasmid/tonic options, I'm not even going to attempt a no-death run.

I can't wait for this... downloading it later. Time for a run-through on hard w/ no vita-chambers. Impossible, but how awesome would it be to get that achievement?

You can just bypass all of the Big Daddies. Thats what I plan to do, and just save alot. The only time I ever died was when facing a Big Daddy.

This ach. is not really that hard, just save a lot and load up when you die. Set traps and strategically engage big daddies and you should have no problem at all. It is possible to take down the first few big daddies when you first encounter them, though it will prob take a few tries. If you dont feel like it, it is possible to wait until you get better weapons and return to them, or simply skip em altogether if you're on your second playthrough and already got the LS related achs.

Couldn't you just save a lot and keep reloading the save if you die. Still be a pain in the ass, but at least you could just save with full health right before a big daddy fight and keep reloading it until you beat it without dying or wasting to many first aid kits.

I won't bother as I don't care about achievements, but it seems doable for those who care and have patience.

You have to be a gold member right now to get it. All silver members have to wait. I just found that out, So i had to renew damn xbox asses.

Yeah It will be alot of cheap tactics on the big Daddies lots of run and guns. It sucks that you don't get the crossbow till later in the game. I could kill a big daddy in 15 seconds, with a electric crossbow. All you do is shoot it at the big daddy, it hurts him for the shot, then the wire shoots out. He moves the wire shocks him and 1/3 of his life goes down.

Its true you forego some plasmids/tonics/other ADAM expensive things, but just for a level or two until you get better weapons, you can then return to levels to harvest/rescue since there are no BD's in teh three areas you cannot reaccess.

More progress:
I became a Big Daddy last night! It's kind of tough to see though... I hope the rest of the game isn't spent as one. Also, I know I didn't come close to finding everything in that level - it seems like the game pushed me along to become a Big Daddy and I didn't really explore at all - I only found like 2 audio diaries. I thought it was almost over but now it looks like I'm going to be escorting a Little Sister somewhere.

Oh yeah, I got the achievement for dealing with all the little sisters but NOT the one for saving them all. Should I be worried? I DEFINITELY saved them all but maybe that is reserved for the end of the game?
