A U.S. Border Patrol agent was held at gunpoint Sunday night by members of the Mexican military who had crossed the border into Arizona, but the soldiers returned to Mexico without incident when backup agents responded to assist.

Agents assigned to the Border Patrol station at Ajo, Ariz., said the Mexican soldiers crossed the international border in an isolated area about 100 miles southwest of Tucson and pointed rifles at the agent, who was not identified.

It was unclear what the soldiers were doing in the United States, but U.S. law enforcement authorities have long said that current and former Mexican military personnel have been hired to protect drug and migrant smugglers.

Thoughts?

Reading the article, your synopsis paints a pretty obvious picture:

They need to paint an actual line.

Aside from that, the rest is hearsay as to whether or not the Mexican Military is being bought out to assist smuggling into the United States.
Sounds like an act of war. An apology and tribute is required from Mexico.
 on both of these

That's because you're considered a racist if you want to protect our southern border.

It's their border, too.

I'm sure y'all would be whoopin' and hollerin' if they done shot a 'messican who was standing on 'messican soil at the time, thinking that these great American heroes deserve congressional medals of honor. So, y'know, being neighbors and all that along the border, you're gonna occasionally run into each other.

Come on, I've never heard anyone say that. Some may argue about the vigilantes down there, but very few citizens deny that there is a porous border problem.

Imagine if our military did this to some Canadians.

If an army of country A enters country B without permission, it is an act of war.

Granted, we shouldn't whip out the nukes for this minor misdeed, but it shouldn't be completely ignored either.

Is that a little sarcasm I detect?

But really, I don't think this is something you can dismiss as "running into each other". This isn't the first time this has happened, hell it's not even the first time they "ran into each other with guns". Now I'm not saying that it's time for some shock and awe, but doesn't this warrant tougher border control (ie a fence, national guard support)? If nothing else there should at least be a discussion in Washington about this, or diplomatic contact with the Mexican authorities. Doesn't seem like any of that is going on.

Many members of the Mexican military are known to be corrupt on the border, helping people across. There is a good chance that's what was going on here, and they got startled and backed off.

Not sure what can be done about it though.

We could annex down to El Salvador and Honduras. Then, we wouldn't have to worry about Mexicans and Guatemalans illegally entering the country.

In all seriousness, I think that's what will eventually happen. It may not happen soon or in our lifetimes, but I think it will eventually happen. I doubt it will happen as a real annex, it will likely happen peacefully and just be a type of merging. I think most of the Mexican government could be easily bribed enough to do it even today if we wanted.

Yeah, but then Ford would have to pay their factory workers minimum wage and people would have to drive further to get cheap prescriptions.

what if we start getting illegal columbia and panamaian?

Ford motor company? I'm not sure that's the first company I would ever pick to blame for hiring illegal workers. Could you provide a link - that would shock the hell out of me considering one of the last things that company has going is that they're at least partially "made in usa".

I do know that Walmart and the meat packing industry are two particularly egregious big biz law breakers in this regard.

Not hiring illegals, but rather moving factories to Mexico. Ford cut jobs in plants building SUVs in the US and opened a new one in Mexico to build a new Fiesta compact. In fact, you'd be surprised where alot of "American" built cars are actually being built.

Ah OK I didn't read your post closely enough - that makes sense.

I actually did realize that "American" cars are not 100% made or assembled in USA (in fact almost nothing is these days) but I don't know the specifics. I won't be surprised if Japanese car companies and American car companies came closer and closer to parity in respect to how many bluecollar American jobs they support.

I really do wonder what non-college educated Americans are going to do anymore - I can't help but think the pool of jobs that are essential to being performed in the USA (such as plumbing, housing improvements, and policing) are not numerous enough to keep a majority of them employed.

As of yet I think the importance of the white-collar job outsourcing debate is overexaggerated - IMO we have yet to see the zenith of this activity.

More annexation.

Right down to the Strait of Magellan.

And if those uppity penguins start taking all of our jobs?

You got it. We annex Antarctica.
