how much fun is borderlands?
Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE FPS noob. I haven't played them all that much because there are other genres that are much more appealing to me and I tend to get very, very severe motion sickness playing them sometimes.
Having said that, I picked this game up during last week's Steam Summer Sale after reading so many good things about it. I'm happy to say that the mix of FPS action, good beginning difficulty, Diablo style loot drops (weapons with modifiers, etc.), and terrific upgradeable skillsets absolutely won me over. I'm even over my motion sickness after getting used to it (which is an extreme miracle in my case).
I'm only level 10 with just a few short hours played so far, but I get the same kind of fun action grind vibe I had when I started off the first few hours of my 100+ hour Torchlight binge last year. The sense of being able to level up, do missions, earn and buy loot, and generally mess around is exhilarating, and I think the developer did a great job of melding two big game elements into one game smoothly (light RPG with FPS).
Core weapon types can have modifiers which makes discovering new weapons a thrill, and gear like grenade mods and shield/health regenerators are also really fun to find and purchase.
I wasn't sure if the post-apocalyptic theme would resonate with me, but I Borderlands style totally grew on me. The textures are intentionally comic book-like, sort of a modern rendition of the XIII style to my eyes. Some seem not to like it, but it gives the game a unique edge and clarity to my eyes.
So, coming from a near-complete FPS newbie I say go for it. If a guy like me can dig it, then I think most anyone can and will.
