Bose® On-Ear Headphones or Beats Solo by Dr. Dre On-Ear Headphones with ControlTalk (White)

Ok I have read the headphone thread on CAG already and there were alot of good suggestions. The reason I am going with these instead of the Grado or even the big Beats by Dr. Dre is because I want them to DJ and to use them at the gym. I have Bose headphones that go in my ear but they fall out all the time. The cases and collapsible of the headphones for transporting is also a good part for me because I will be moving them around alot. I have heard the Bose set and the sound is way better then any other brand I have tried (Sennheiser, Skullcandy, JVC, and Phillips). I have not been able to try the Beats by Dr. Dre yet but have heard good things (and the white ones match my laptop.).

If you don't read the rest then please give me your pros and cons on each and any other suggestions that might fall in this category.

I don't know about taking either of those headphones to the gym. I don't know about you, but my headphone wire frequently gets snagged on a number of things at the gym and I'm not sure if bringing a $180 pair of headphones to the gym would be wise.

I mean, if you're willing to spend that much on headphones as it is, I say you spend and extra $33 and get these: http://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267090774&sr=1-1
I use them for everything at the gym. They sound great, are really comfortable, and in the off-chance that I ever do break them, I'll just buy a new pair because they aren't too expensive.

As for your original two choices, I'd go with the Beats only because I've experienced the Beats Studio and they were some of the best sounding headphones I have ever heard. Not sure about the Solo version though.

How are the sound quality compared to the Beats that you tried and I am pretty good about not snagging on stuff but the in ear headphones were annoying me. I know it is a lot of money but I have the money right now and want something that I would keep for awhile and not have to rebuy.
you really don't need either one for gym use, but if you insist then go with Beats Solo.
Yeah I guess I should have read my message first but these will be used to DJ first and the gym second. I fixed the first post. I listen to a lot of different music (mostly underground hip-hop and soul records so bass is not the biggest factor) on vinyl and would use these to do blends and cueing music.

I tried out the Beats when they first came out a while back at both a Best Buy and an Apple Store. They are really high grade stuff, the cushioning felt really comfortable, hardly any external noise made it through while the headphones were on, the acoustics were vibrant and clear, and the bass was most definitely present and kicking.

After a few moments with the Beats, I realized that I was willing to drop $300 for a pair. The only problem is that I haven't had $300 extra to spend on headphones, so I'm still waiting on that.

Thanks for the heads up I am leaning towards those Beats Solo but just found out that they are not the same as the big Beats and they are coming out with a Beats Solo HD.

To be honest if you want to DJ with these headphones I'd suggest heading to djforums.com and looking at the equipment section there. Just to repeat everything that they will tell you: both of your choices are the last choices they would pick for DJing (myself included). Bose is especially not a good choice for DJing. I understand that they have noise isolating headphones, but rarely do they provide what you need in a club environment. If you plan on spending close to $200 on headphones then I would recommend these without reservation:

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-Pr...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1267153814&sr=1-1

These provide good noise isolation, one swivel cup (although it only swivels vertically), user interchangeable parts, and incredible sound whether listening or DJing. I guarantee you right now that you will probably not do better for that price.

I understand that style is also a big factor with some DJs so they go for Skull Candy. Also a poor decision. There are plenty of headphones that look great out there that are also great sounding, but I would also like to recommend against the Sony MDR-V700. While they are basically the pioneer of the "huge silver swivel-cup" headphone genre (there have been many companies following that look) overall they are somewhat lackluster in build quality and sound. I will admit that I used them for two years in the clubs and they provide the big bass you need to match beats with, but comfort becomes an issue when you have both earpads on and they eventually broke from too much swiveling which is apparently a big issue. They pressed against my head and were uncomfortable after 20 minutes. For DJing: great. Listening: not so great. These are some great alternatives

Pioneer SE-DJ 5000

Pioneer HDJ-1000

Technics RP-DJ1200 (also come in black)

Not particularly sure about these but thought I'd list them anyway:

Hope this helps.

Don't buy a new pair. Koss has a "no-questions-asked-lifetime warranty" on their headphones. Send them in with $6 and they either fix it or give you a brand new pair, usually the latter from what I've experienced.

I second the Sennheisers that equest943 recommended. If not, the Sony MDR-7506 would be another one to look at. I've read on Head-Fi that a lot of famous DJs use/used them.

Damn why did you have to remind me about DJForums.com I have been a member over there since I bought my turntables off of some their recommendations. The bad thing is now I have more headphones to consider now:
Sennheiser HD25-1-II
Ultrasone DJ1 PRO
Beats by Dre Studio (found for about $240 shipped) or the Solo HD, Spin (when they come out)
Bose On-Ear Headphones

Oh sweet, I remembered hearing something about a lifetime warranty, but didn't know it was essentially a "no-questions-asked" one.

niether, akg or denon's maybe the new shures but i havent heard or seen them yet. The dre ones are just crazy bass that is unnecessary unless you think bass is cool, which it is, but its still stupid.

Dang, forgot about Ultrasone. I've heard those are great and have wanted to try a pair myself just for kicks.

Here's a pair to checkout:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/12/ultrasone-intros-audiophile-grade-edition-8-headphones/

But not for DJing. haha.

Both pairs of headphones are outstanding, i have the bose around ear and i used to own the on ear but switched because they around ear is better for playing drums, the beats i have tried cuz my buddy has em, the sound quality on them is great, if you listen to alot of rap/hip-hop the bass on them is unmatched, but if your not willing to dish out 300$ for the beats i would just go with the bose, because they are nearly half the price and the quality on them is almost the same, just not as much bass lol

So I ended up getting the Beats by Dr. Dre Studio for $230 after doing a lot of research because I listen and spin mostly hip-hop. I think the price is reasonably for a DJ headphone because all of the other ones I was looking at were $200 or more. Thanks for all the help and recommendations.

I was going to suggest the M-Audio Studiophile cans, but looks like I'm too late. I found the Dre cans to be really hyped in the bass (no surprised) to the point where even non-hiphop sounded like it was coming from a lowrider and, like everything Monster, way overpriced. But if you're happy with 'em, that's all that matters.

Yeah I want their monitor speakers for my home setup once I get more things together.
