Brave Story: New Traveler
Would you honestly recommend Brave Story to every PSP owner you know? Or would you recommend it strictly to Japanofiles or people that love stale, ancient game design mechanics (like myself, and I assume, you)?
No; and that is my point exactly.

When I said that he was right in giving it a 6.5, I said so because I thought that was moreso a fair analysis of how the mainstream gaming audience would accept it, instead of a score that represents how good the game is;

....representing the exact mean of your argument: "It's a good game, but it's not for everyone."
...and the exact mean of my own argument: "Professionals' analyses are only good for determining mainstream popularity potential"

The 1-10 scale isn't a popularity contest, although that really is what it ends up being anyways.

GameSpot and bigger sites write reviews for the average consumer, not those in the niche.

Whether or not that's the way to go depends on every's own opinion, but the main problem I have with their reviewing games is the lack of diversity.

So (and I mean sooooooo) many RPGs on the PSP are given a 6.5 or something close, but those games are bogged by not only archaic gameplay, but also technical problems.

Are they rating the game, or what it could've been? Why is it that games bogged down with 5+ second loadtimes and other game-breaking problems receive the same score as BS? If they get the same score, does that mean that without the fast loadtimes, etc... BS would've received an even lower score?

These reviews hurt game sales for games. It's not a matter of try it out for yourself or YMMV. Dodson pretty much said flat out that this game is not worth it.

You agree with the score and how he came to it. But if you read his review, you can see that he is at fault. He doesn't give a damn for the game, and the review wasn't comprehensive at all.

EDIT: Game Theory Podcast Episode 21 - 8/21

Worth a listen at around minute 33, talks about this kind of thing a bit.
