Is George Lucas holding a gun to all of our heads? No he is not. Therefore we do not have to buy ANY of them. Period.
But I want a decent version. Digitally remastered like the first DVD set, but without any of the later revision stuff and a 5.1 or higher audio track. Is that too much to ask for? I don't think so. Nor do I think it's too much to ask for me to save my money until such a version is offered. It will be eventually.

I agree. Lucas using industry standards for these DVDs isn't too much to ask.
And it looks like they aren't going to change their minds:
Wow. I was just going to wait, but now that they're clearly trying to stick it to people who want the original non-shat up versions, I'm not going to have anything to do with Lucas anymore. Keep your "vision," George.

I agree I would love to have a good edition of the ORIGINAL versions but I'm not going to rebuy them if what we are getting is of crap quality. that and the ship George Lucas thinks he sails on while treating us who made his god forsaken fictional universe as popular as it is as slaves.

Already got the LD to DVD transfers myself along with the A Digital Man edits of the entire six films along with owning the 1995 THX LDs, the 2004 SE DVDs, and the 1987 pan and scan VHS set complete with the 10th anniversary promo ad at the start of each tape. I think I got enough copies as is anyways so no big deal.
(1) I already have the special edition on both vhs and dvd. IF I bought this latest release it would only be to obtain the *original* theatrical release with all the matte lines and primitive 70s technology. That said.....
(2) DVD has a max resolution of 720x480 dots on the screen; did Lucas take advantage of that improved technology for this "first time on dvd" original theater version? NO of course not; he's giving us the original movie in laserdisc resolution:
425x320
(analog letterboxed) 40% the pixel resolution that DVD can offer!!! What a royal ripoff; are we fans supposed to be happy about getting an inferior-quality print of the original movie? Fat chance! The original movie was recorded with 6-track surround & on hi-resolution 70mm film
I was never much of a fan of Star Trek, but if I was, I would be totally pissed off at the way Spielberg keeps ripping people off with these re-issues.
Yeah, I'd just like to appologize for this thread, cuz these releases suck.
Just wait till the theatricals are remastered in HD and buy that, because it's inevitable.
It's ok. You didn't know how much they sucked at the time.

Or buy the DVDs that private fans have ripped from their personal laserdiscs (ebay).
It looks like the French versions of the OT will be enhanced for 16x9 TVs.
Let's hope Lucas realized he was about to make a huge mistake and decided to correct it for everybody.

this is the ing post of the year
milk-thru-nose level funny
(and i wrote a scathing one star review of both IV and V at Amazon)
I also wrote hate filled one star reviews of these new DVDs at Amazon. It looks like all three of the new DVDs have an average rating of 2 out of 5 on Amazon, which is great and I hope people high up in Lucasfilm are seeing this negative reaction to these DVD releases.
It says on the Bits that Lucasfilm is going to have a panel at Comic-Con. I almost feel sorry for the guy who has to answer to everyone about these DVDs, but then I remember the crappy product he's trying to sell us.
