Brokeback Mountain
Pretty funny that christians and their barely cloaked "family values" groups are picking apart movies to witch-hunt homosexuals, yet it's fine for 50 cent to openly glorify crack-dealers and pimping in his new blockbuster. Really - which group of people threatens society more?

I believe in the first amendment, so I don't think anything should be censored, I just think it points out the depths of christian (particularly baptist and fundamentalist) bigotry in this country.
If the Christian groups went on a rampage about 50 Cent's movie, they would have been labeled racist.
Birth control and voting rights for women... surely these are the root causes of homosexuality in America.
The Catholic Church came out with a report that says womens rights lead to the end of the world as we know it.

And Catholic groups are racist, people are just too fucknig dumb to see that.

Careful, David; it is "christians" you are afraid of far more than Catholics.

What you're facing is a collaboration of various christian sects (nondenominational, evangelical/pentecostal, baptist, essentialists). While I'm not certain that the Catholic church is fond of this movie (and, given Pope Benedict's first major action, doing nothing to solve the molestation problem by focusing on homosexuality and preventing what are essentially "out" gays from becoming priests, thus forcing Catholic homosexuals who want to devote their life to God into the closet), the groups with the most political clout are comprised of the groups I mentioned above. Tony Perkins, Jerry Falwell, James Dobson? Not catholic.

While it may be a small argument, these christian groups view Catholics as hellbound due to idolatry (in the form of the Virgin Mary and the Pope); they want nothing to do with Catholics, and in the case of the most vehement of christians, the enemy of my enemy is still going to hell, and not to be negotiated with. The best evidence of this is the "Left Behind" series of books, which are so radically popular; the pope in this fiction series is actuall the henchman (the "Grima Wormtongue," if you will) to the ultimate villain. While I feel awkward using fiction as evidence, the appeal of these books is in their cultural relevance to the audience it aims at.

I feel like I'm being too defensive of Catholics; while they aren't, at the administrative level, permissive of homosexuality, keep in mind that Catholics tend to vote democrat.

In all honesty, where the hell did you come up with that?

Know what I liked about this movie? The SNL parody of the movie's preview. (totally on spot as well, when compared to the theatrical preview).
How flippin hilarious is it when you realize how nasty two old miners in grisly beards in the woods would really be? Isn't it lucky for us all that "Hollywood" (which one could take as the same as saying "The Man" around these parts) decided to make a movie featuring two bucksome youths?

heh, in all reality it would be nice to see it not being plugged as pure gimmik.

It is possible, I'm currently re-in-love with Rent, and that has two very believable relationships that you actually Care about in the movie that has nothing to do with the genetalia of the partners involved...so, I guess if they made the movie well it would be a character study, not a romance. And then it would have potential. Other then that, it just looks like artsy-type drama-award-bait.

SNL was hilarious.

However this is an issue that is hardly the province of this one movie. Hollywood routinely features movies with whore-houses packed with beautiful, clean, disease-free women and countless mideval/wild west/etc movies that "forget" the fact that most everybody was sick and covered up to their eyeballs in dirt. More movies should be like the first ten minutes of "Saving Private Ryan", however most people don't go to the theaters to see stark depictions of reality, do they?

Indeed they don't go to see depictions of reality, and frankly I'd be just as concerned that people will wind up going to see this movie to "forget" how uncomfortable they are around "real" gay people.

btw, the mental image of the dude clinging to the stained longjohns and smelling them is emblazoned into my mind forever, lol...

I was watching some show with Nathan Lane and he was bagging on the movie too, it was pretty funny.

Yet I wouldn't be surprised if the main audience for this is chicks, they buy all of these schlocky romance movies.

I do.
I do.
Yes, because movies about giant furry monsters flying space ships while green midgets with flashlight swords fight guys named "Darth" accurately portray what I see in everyday life........

What is your implication?
http://www.sbcbaptistpress.org/bpnews.asp?ID=22287

It describes how the normalization of homosexuality, spearheaded by films like brokeback mountain, will ruin male friendships. This has already been started, and has led to increased sexual aggression among boys, and adult male relationships have been reduced to drinking in bars and watching sports. The argument is summed up in this paragraph:

It also states that the common reaction to a scene in LOTR is that frodo and sam were gay. The scene is where Sam finds Frodo and believes him to be dead, so he picks him up a bit and holds his head.
Well that was retarded.

Can I ask a serious question?
Would a straight male enjoy this movie or not? Is it just like Charlie's Angels or any similar type thing (i.e. the entire purpose is that it is hot) for girls and gay guys? Someone invited to me and I don't know if I should go or not. Is it quality otherwise?

I think it probably appeals to the artsy crow more than anything. The romance isn't typical, beyond the obvious sex thing.

I guess I'll go.
I usually like 'artsy' movies
Plus I know Ang Lee's son.
