FEMA Director Brown pulled off Katrina relief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The director of Federal Emergency Management Agency, Michael Brown, who has been fiercely criticized over the relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina, will be pulled off relief operations in the Gulf Coast, two U.S. officials said on Friday.

They said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff was bringing Brown back to Washington and putting Vice Admiral Thad Allen, chief of staff of the U.S. Coast Guard, in charge of operations on the ground.

One official familiar with the decision said Chertoff made the decision and was soon to make the announcement. Brown has been under heavy criticism for a slow emergency response to the hurricane, with some Democrats demanding he be fired.

A senior Homeland Security Department official said: "The secretary will announce that Mike Brown will return to Washington and will continue to be the administrator for FEMA nationally but Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen will take over operations on the ground."

Brown's removal from relief operations on the ground comes a week after Bush publicly applauded his efforts, saying: "Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job. The FEMA Director is working 24 -- they're working 24 hours a day."

This speaks for itself; regretfully, this, too, was about 5 days too late. I smell a trend.
 
I notice it does not say that he has been fired. He has been replaced in terms of active duty and called back to Washington.....but not fired. Is this what they refer to, when they talk about a "good old boys' club?'

WASHINGTON -- Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Michael Brown is being removed from his role in managing the Bush administration's Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and is returning to Washington.

Brown, who has been under fire for the federal government's slow response to the storm that devastated much of the Gulf Coast region, will be replaced by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen, who was overseeing New Orleans relief and rescue efforts.

Asked if he was being made a scapegoat for a federal relief effort that has drawn widespread and sharp criticism, Brown told The Associated Press after a long pause: "By the press, yes. By the president, No."

...and, judging from that quote, he feels that he has been unjustly criticized. Party affiliations aside, I am somewhat surprised that this man does not feel embarassed (I won't even say "ashamed") after having had chaos ensue in Katrina's aftermath.
 
He should probably be demoted quite a bit but not fired. I'm sure he's competent at some level. Although I bet neither even his pay nor personal staff will be cut.

Its possibly he's competent at some level, but I don't know what level. His career history is far from successful on any level. On top of that, he padded his resume with misinformation, rarely the sign of a person with a good work history.

Anyway, I think the odds are that he'll be taking a walk in a few weeks. All the information that being 'anonymously' released by the White House regarding his background and his bad decisions during this crisis clearly show that he's being set up to take a fall for the administration. I wouldn't cry over his fate too much, though: I'm sure they're already arranging a cushy, high-paying 'consulting' job for him in the oil industry in exchange for him continuing to play along.
 
Show me evidence of someone leaving the Bush administration for incompetence, failure, lying, patronage, corporatism, or taking responsibility for anything going wrong, and I'll give you my first born son (and I have goddamn good genes!).

In the meantime, I'll go compile a list of people who have been forced out, left, or demoted because of the Bush administrations attempts to censor scientific information, adherence to a metaphysically-based moral standard, unwillingness to show complex cognitive skills in the face of complex problems, and in general do their best to bring American society as close to pre-enlightenment reasoning as they can.

Yeah, I read in the Washington Post that in the past ten years, the number of DC lobbyists has doubled and at the same time their pay has doubled. Can you fathom what that means in terms of corporate influence?

Here's an opinion piece on the latest Bush appointee to cash out at the expense of the American taxpayer, Mr media consolidator Michael Powell himself. Why go after shady corparate dealings (Adelphia, WorldCom and Enron) when you can put on some razzle-dazzle about middle-aged left breasts and outrageous fart jokes, as you sell out media diversity through the back door.

That's what I was thinking. Then again, the whole finally supporting the iraq war in front of the u.n. may fit one of those, but it didn't exactly harm him in bush's eyes.

Yeah, I really can't see Powell as fitting those criteria. He most definitely wasn't fired from the Bush White House for incompetence/failure/lying/whatever - he left because he couldn't do the lying and ass-kissing that was required of him in order to stay. I also wouldn't say that he has a soul, since if he did, he wouldn't have gone in front of the UN and lied in order to justify a war. He, at most, only has a partial soul.

Anyway, getting back to the subject, I've been a rather big doubter myself that anyone would be called to account for the failures of FEMA (other than maybe some low-level flunkies who insisted upon creating reports warning of disaster and levy failures...) With the string of 'leaked documents coming out of the White House, though, I think its beginning to look likely. After all, we all know who 'leaked' documents come from in the White House - Carl Rove, or someone acting on his behalf. I really can't imagine any scenario in which he would leak damaging information of this sort unless they're setting Brown up to fall on his sword for Bush.
