CAGiversary!
Hey guys. I tend to come up with my own builds but I'm out of sorts at the moment, burglars got into my house yesterday and stole my tv, computer, monitors, Wii, and banjo (lol, I know). I have homeowner's insurance so will be getting a check for most of it. At least my family and pets are all unhurt.

Bah, sob story over. Give me a kickass build before I do something stupid like buy from Alienware. Thanks.

^^that. Considering the huge budget.

If it's a deal where you get a check for a set amount, then can spend that amount, I'd go much cheaper and pocket the rest.

You stand to gain very little with the VelociRaptor now over one of the newer WD Black or Samsung SATA drives. The difference is minimal, but the price difference is huge. I'm looking at the WD Black 640 myself and after reading some reviews and performance charts, there is no way I could justify a VR anymore.

That Corsair supply is overkill. You really don't need something so huge. I've got the Corsair 620W and it is plenty for what I do. I highly recommend Corsair, but make sure you buy the HX series.

imo, go for a nice case, power supply, and monitor. those are the thing that you can re-use over and over again. you've got a good opportunity to spend more than usual on them, so take advantage of it.

the core components, i'd say just go for the average 500-1000$ budget.

After looking at the combo discounts available, this is what I came up with. The 300gb VelociRaptor I already purchased isn't shown here. I am going to research the case and then pull then trigger, I think.

A $400 video card? Seriously?

Why would you spend that much on a card that will be obsolete in a few months? You can get plenty of performance for half that or less. Even if someone is giving you a check (your insurance company), I can't see why you'd just piss away money like that. I understand you want high end stuff here because you're getting a check, but still...

I bought that same Samsung/Vista combo earlier in the week btw. Should be here tomorrow.

overkill in several respects but the most egregious offense is the mobo/gpu.. wasting $300 more than the most you should on just those two parts.

Personally, I'd drop the GTX 285 in favor of a 275. You'll get 95% of the performance of the 285 for ~$150 less.

I used to game at 5040x1050 (three 1680x1050 monitors). It strained my 8800GTX card and e8400 CPU. I mean, that's a lot of pixels.

I have to pay the $1000 deductible. The insurance check picks up the rest. So it's not like I'm getting ahead in this deal. That said, I had an expensive computer and I liked it.

But your $1000 deductible covers other things in your home, does it not? If you say, my computer was worth $2500, and they cut you a check for that, why would you spend that entire amount on a new computer when you can get something that is maybe 5-10% less performance for several hundred dollars less and pocket the rest?

a big issue that many many ppl overlook is this computer a couple years from now

about a year ago i built a machine that was somewhat high end (Q6600, 8800GT) and i'm now hating the heat/noise.. if i upgraded today it'd be a quieter / cooler machine with comparable performance. a comparable machine can now be built substantially cooler at half the price (my build was $1400).

going with a 130w cpu and gtx 285 is going to be extremely hot and in a couple months it's gonna be pretty average, except yours will be noisier and hotter than most, wasting power... not even mentioning the bad performance/$ ratio or how fast those overpriced parts depreciate...

it's just a very bad decision all around. and three 1680x1050? wtf.. that sort of aspect ratio doesn't even make sense, and you have to deal with crappy bars breaking it up. if you're gonna invest heavily in monitors go with a bitchin 30" 2560x1600.. about the same amount of screen real-estate and probably about the same price but more manageable aspect ratio and no black bars dividing the image.
