With a built PC, you get what you pay for. If you want to play games on a 21 inch trinitron monitor- 5.1 Klipsch speaker system, and top end graphics card, etc- you'll only get a cheap system in your dreams.

Save your penny's and invest wisely- buy a high quality Monitor and speakers- they will last you longer than other components.
 
this wouldn't be hard at all, as long as you were willing to get a simple case, cause the nicer looking cases tend to be rather pricey and would be 100+ alone.
 
The Antec Sonata case is nice looking and designed to suppress noise along with the other qualites that make Antec one of my preferred case vendors. Fry's recently had this for $50 after a rebate.

Good place to start.

Also, if you're in Fry's territory, they often have very good prices on CPUs bundled with utter crap motherboards. These deals can be so good it's worth buyin just for the CPU and giving/throwing the board away or selling it for a trivial price. Then you can buy a good motherboard, the foundation for a good system.

The difference is miniscule at today's RAM prices. Also, XP can easily be tweaked to reduce a lot of the memory usage by switching off services that contribute nothing to the system's intended use. You can get the footprint down quite far without sacrificing XP's advantages for gaming.

At this late date it doesn't make sense to use anything other than XP.

Yeah, I wouldn't be able to play Doom 3 unless I had this SUPER monitor instead of my old one. :p
 
I just built one with a cool case with 420 watt supply.

Amd 64 3000+ and a soyo dragon plus motherboard.

$350 for all that but then $150 mail in rebates from microcenter.
 
I just built my computer, 250 gig hdd, 512 ram, motherboard, video card, 2.8ghz intel processor, dvd burner, and a pretty nice case all for under $700 with rebates, and a monitor for 100 after rebates.
