Burn in HELL, Microsoft!!!
I have to agree... I have had to replace THREE XBOX consoles in the last few years. Microsoft builds crap... honestly... my Gamecube and Playstation 2 have had no problems. But the XBOX... bad DVD-ROM drives... bad HDD once...

The customer service BLOWS. Plain and simple they have a bunch of total idiots running the show. But then again, I can't even recall any place that offered customer service with reps that actually understood or cared about the products they represented.

They just read a script and follow the orders that they are given. Soo... if you hope for ANY action... just get past the first level support and go for broke with someone higher up.

At the very least, places like Costo or other places that simply do not check the serial number upon return are always a good bet. The crappy product just ends up right back at Microsoft anyways.... at Microsoft's expense. Not that I'm telling you that is a good option or anything... a-hem...
I'm glad a few others agree with me. My Xbox is actually a launch Xbox, and I had problems with it since my 90 day warranty went out. I had to boil an OXM demo disk for it to somewhat work; otherwise, it would not work at all. I could never get any games from Blockbuster to work, although the game was brand new and no one rented it. There were times I went through eight copies of a game and none of them worked. Most any new game I bought, took several tries for my Xbox to play it. My Xbox finally got repaired around Christmas a year after I got it, because MS was finally doing free repairs. Mine worked for a week, then it broke again and a few other times, despite how many times I sent it off to repair. Afterwards, I just decided to say screw my Xbox and start supporting another console more. Now, I support my PS2 much more, but that's what I should have done in the first place because it has more games that suit me well.

As of right now, my Xbox still gives me trouble. New games either take a few tries to get working, or they just take forever to load. That's why I quit buying the multi-platform games for Xbox, and get them for either PS2 or GC. My PS2 on the other hand, has been working perfectly ever since I got it. Sony consoles breaking down is a myth, because all my Playstation consoles work excellent. I've played my PS2 for 700 days straight, and still never had a problem. I've rented games that were damaged big time and my PS2 still played them fine.

I think the whole extended warranty is just a way for Microsoft to take more money out of everyones pockets. They basically want to make you pay $50 since they know their crappy console cannot last that long. There's no way I was supporting MS doing that.

When i got my xbox i made sure i got the $50 2yr extended warrenty from Microsoft themselves. Mine wouldnt power up one day so i called up , theny sent a box, fixed everything , and shipped it back withen a week. In the meantime i had bought another xbox as i was running a tournament at the time . I wrote there warrenty department and transfered the warrenty to the new syste,. No problem with it at all
If I scrach my Toyota Scion should I make Toyota give me a free one, plus a free $500 giftcard to 'keep me as a customer'? Hell no.
I think you should probably pay Toyota to scratch that POS for you, it might look better that way, god those cars are ugly.

The last post about Sony's systems made me want to respond.
My PS2 did fail. I was a launch day system that all of sudden started getting quieter and quieter when playing DVDs. It had also stopped reading my PS1 games. If it wasn't for the fact that I bought an extended warranty from BB, I would have had to buy a new system. By then they had dropped to 250 so I was able to get a new system and a new extended warranty. After that, a few months after the network adapter for the PS2 came out, the PS2 stopped recognizing the network adapter.I called Sony tech support and they said that I would have to ship it for repairs. I went back to BB with my extended warranty and this time got a 150 PS2, an extended warranty and a couple of games as well.
Would you believe I still have my original PS1 from launch day and it still works!
So now I am a guarded consumer as far as systems go and will get extended warranties on my game systems whenever possible.

(Man, all of this just to point out that Sony systems can go bad too)

2 out of 2 Xboxes have had problems for me. My launch Xbox was crapping out with DREs and my 2nd Xbox is having problems with the disc tray closing ever since the first day I took it out of the factory sealed box in December.

2 out of 2 PS2s have had no problems for me. OK, I lied, my launch PS2 would not read scratched or dirty DVD rentals very well at times.

The first xbox I bought didn't even turn on. I spent a half hour trying to figure out wtf was going on but finally resigned myself to the fact that i had gotten a defect. It's been 3 weeks now since I've gotten a new xbox and it's been going well but lately I'm noticing that sometimes - particularly during loading sequences for Halo 2 or Ninja Gaiden - the game will hang. It'll constantly say loading (even after 10 minutes) and in Halo 2, that vertical beam of light will just stop moving. Is that a bug in the games or a kink in the system...
Being I ran a videogame store for 2 years (two seperate ones) a 'broken' system came in often. Most of the time the customer would bitch they did nothing wrong etc. Well, all you need to do is OPEN your eyes. I would have Xbox's come in with roaches in them, PS2's with broken controler ports, Gamecubes where kids would jam FOOD in the disc drive (can't think of the proper name right now). Yet they would still bitch they did nothing wrong and we should replace it. When you try to explain to them we only offer a 14 day warranty, and the system of choice has only a 90 day warranty, they still continue to bitch. Now, should I give them a free Xbox because they screwed up there last one to 'make them happy'? If I scrach my Toyota Scion should I make Toyota give me a free one, plus a free $500 giftcard to 'keep me as a customer'? Hell no.
I think you need to relearn the definition of analogy, because yours fails on a fundamental level. This is not a scratch. A scratch does not render your Scion useless (it only makes it more unattractive, which is an almost impossible feat in itself).

An error message built into the product that tells you you must send the product in for servicing otherwise it will not work...thats something different. I'd also like to point out, that if you were in my shoes and had not crammed food into your xbox but it stopped working just a few months after purchase, you too would be upset.

Anyways, as I mentioned earlier, I had/have no problem paying to repair my xbox. I just have a problem with the high price, and the fact that I'm not paying for repaired/replaced parts...just a service fee. What if the cable connecting my HDD to the motherboard or power supply simply fell out? I have to pay 95 dollars for that? I could open the damn thing and fix it myself, but then, what if its the motherboard thats fried...then that would screw me out of 150.

I understand the point you tried unsuccessfully to make...there are people who damage their system through misuse. There are people ignorant to the point where even handing them a simple tool like a hammer or a pencil could very well spell doom for all mankind. This is not that kind of situation. My xbox has never been moved from its perfect spot on my end table. It had wonderful ventilation, and is close to the floor, meaning cold air is readily available. I clean the dust of it regularly. I have never done anything foul or naughty with it (hacking or otherwise). I think I have a right to be pissed when it stops working, just as you'd have a right to be pissed if your Scion stopped running after 4 months and you had to buy a new one (although my advice is make sure its insured, leave it running with the doors unlocked and the windows down, and next time pick a better looking car).
take credit card
go to walmart
buy xbox
take sticky wrapping paper off new xbox
place sticky wrapping paper on old xbox
return to walmart and get pissed, tell them it looks like they sold you a used product. get money back.

it works, and it' the best way to replace a console that doesn't work. I've had to do it once with my xbox. I refused to pay another 149 for a console I payed 300 for in the first place.

~b
You're lying. Badly too, might I add.

When you buy a console from Walmart they scan the barcode on the bottom/back of the console. Every console, no matter if its a Gamecube, DS, or Xbox, has a piece of the packaging cut out for that specific purpose. They scan the barcode and the number prints on your receipt. If you go to return a different console they scan the barcode on it. If it doesn't match up they'll look at it to see if the computer is wrong. And when that doesn't work they'll flat out refuse to take the system back.
Im shocked at how my Sega Saturn has outlived my Playstation 1 and 2.
I hate that the system memory is tied to it's battery life, though. If the battery goes, then your system memory goes. Yeah, I have the offical Sega memory cartridge, but even that erased on me for some reason. All my FPW: 6MS and WSB '98 files are toast (I had them on the system memory and the official cart as a backup). :(

I haven't powered on my PSX since 2000. I bet mine still works. Only kept it to play FPW: G again someday.

I still have my original NES which my sister had before I was born. I think they got it in 86' so its 19 years old and still works like a charm.
So, my fairly new, COMPLETELY UNMODDED and UNHACKED Xbox just died...just a couple hours ago. My roommate came in and we were going to play a game I just rented for 8 bucks from Blockbuster...Green/Red light...error 8 (No HDD Found).

I call their customer support, and a pre-pubescent sounding rep tells me that my warranty has expired and I need to send in my system and pay 80 dollars and outgoing shipping fees. I ask him what alternatives I have, and possible solutions. He, of course, doesn't know s**t, so he just tells me thats my only option. So I resist the urge to cuss him out, but may have let one slip, and I hang up.

I just bought a few new games, have a couple preordered, and most importantly, I got a really good Xbox version (the one with the samsung drive, which is irreplaceable IMO). And now its useless. I can't even get to the dashboard. Seems to me like either the HDD is broken or the Controller on it is fried. I'm so pissed right now...I have absolutely no options except to somehow get my system back home to my brother and his asian roommates who once in a while have Xbox modding parties in the hopes that they can get a new HDD in there. I will repeat that I have never altered, opened, or fondled this system in any way, and now, after only having the thing for a few months, I will have to let some people crack it open just so i can f**king use it.

I'm so disappointed. I wanted to vent here, because I like this site. But I'm so disappointed. I had just gotten DoA:Ultimate for 27 bucks, was about to preorder MLB 2K5...and now...ugh.

Someone say something funny and cheer me up, or post a photo of you taking a baseball bat to an Xbox Customer Support rep.

Ugh...
My year old one just died. That makes two, so when trying to fix it, a friend of mine electricuted himself, and fried the motherboard a few minutes later. Now I have two destroyed Xbox's sitting on my counter, and I couldn't feel better.

Thats amazing if its the old slot-load NES, because the design meant that every game put in or taken out would wear down the connectors a little bit, and EVENTUALLY, the system would be rendered useless. Either you kept it in perfect condition, or you rarely used it. Props to you...I have all my games still, but my system died long ago. God bless NEStopia.

It's silly to pay $80 to get your system fixed when a new one cost $150. But that's just me, the price to repair and ship seem way over priced.
