Actually, the crowd corrected him.
Correcting himself would imply that he picked up on his mistake himself, something he is incapable of.

I know he restates it, but he only picked up on his error because people in the crowd corrected him.

He actually did catch that one though. He was repeating "mixed messages" in the debate so much he started to say that, but stopped partway through the phrase and correctly stated mixed messages.
