Buying a PS2: thinking about refurbished.

Hey guys,

I used to own a PS2 awhile back. I had to sell it though because I quit my job and needed the cash big time and really didn't have a choice but to sell it or my Xbox (and my Xbox is my baby). Well now that I have another job and all, I am wanting to pick another one up.

I am thinking about getting a refurbished one to save me some cash but I am kind of scared to. I hear a lot of horror stories from folks who has bought refurbished/used consoles and had them break down on them quickly.

So I come here to ask a question. Has anybody bought a refurbished PS2 and had it work fine? If I hear that a good number of people have purchased these without problems, I might consider getting one from EB with an extended warrenty (if they offer them). I may just say hell with it and get a new one, but I am trying to save as much cash as possible.

I would recomend buying a Ps2 Used from EB because they test them in house dont get one of their Refurbished ones they tend to be bustsbecause the company refurbishes them and sends them out, the lasers in a ps2 are very fragile and get bumped in shipping and generally get out of alignment. a Used one is a better bet
 
i would not even think of gettin my systems used or refurbished. i dont think the "worrying if its gonna break hassle" is worth the $30/$40 price diff
 
Used = bad
Refurb = ok
New = good


I would avoid used like the plague unless it had an excellent (long) warranty. Refurb can be very good if they actually refurbished the drive, so you won't immediately get DRE's.

With the PS2, its all about the warranty because every single PS2 *will* fail after enough time and use.
 
well I just saw that Circuit City sells the online bundles for the same price as a PS2 core system, so I think that alone is worth buying a new one.
 
All stores will sell the Online bundle for $150 but it is just hard to find stores that have it instock. I picked up my PS2 at EB Games and got their 2 year replacement plan so I can just return it for a new one if I have any problems. I just took advantage of their replacement plan with my 2 year old Thomson DVD drive Xbox and got a Brand new Phillips drive Xbox with no problems during the switch.
 
If you're gonna get a preowned console, as some people already said, go with refurb over used.

Refurbs are at least fixed back to factory conditions.

Used consoles are just tested (maybe) and then sold as is.

how much did the 2 year warrenty cost?
 
I would just spend some extra money on a new system. More trustworthy, and you don't have to worry about it malfunctioning in the near future.
 
If I were you I would get a used PS2, just because it is used doesn't mean it doesn't work well and plus the store probably checks the system to see if it works. I bought a used PS2 and it works perfectly.
 
I've had a refurb v4 ps2 since winter 2002, and I haven't had any problems. I got mine from GameStop. I'd say if you're looking to save a couple bucks and don't want to go used, this is a good way to go.
 
I bought a refurb last Black Friday from EBGames.com - $129, I think, plus a free Madden 2003. Not a bad deal at the time. So far so good....I had some issues with it a couple of months ago, sort of DRE but not quite. (It would try forever to read the disc, but I never saw the "Disc Read Error" message come up.) Anyway, a few blasts of compressed air and she was as good as new -- or refurbished, anyway. :)
