Buying a TV. need CAGvice.

Well, it seems my home entertainment is lacking. I've got my surround sound, my gaming systems, some great DVDs to watch, but there's one weak link in all of this: my TV. I currently have a craptacular 20-something inch panasonic. this has to change. I've got roughly $1k to work with here.
My hope is that some of you CAGers can give me some good advice. should I go with size? I saw a 51" Magnavox at CC for about $1k. Or should I go with brand names? I'm also concerned with both plasma and rear projection screens while I'm gaming (ie the residual image problem).
any advice would be much appreciated.

for 399$ you can get a great 27" sony WEGA trinitron standard tube... I know you probably want HD, but ofor 399 it's a killer set.

You can easily get a 50+ inch projection HDTV for 1k. Go HD or not at all.
