Buying a used PS3 a good idea?(would get it from the Gamefunk deal)

I'm making about $400 or a little over that off of my old gen games(after shipping) and I was thinking about doing the Gamefunk.com used 60gb PS3 deal for $359 and shipping. But, how reliable are the PS3s? From what I've seen in the deal thread for the used PS3's from them, they seem to look almost as if they've been babied and there's not alot of wear and tear on them.

I know I should just plunk the extra $100-130(with tax) on the new 60 gb I've seen locally, but since I'm selling the majority of my old gen stuff with this deal, I would be left with about $50 to my name and I'd like to have SOMETHING left to buy a game to play on my PS3.

So, good or bad idea for a used PS3? I know they have a massive fan in them and the failure rate has been almost non-existent, but I'm a tad worried.

I dunno. Presonally I liek to buy everything Brand New. I like the feeling on opening the box for the first time. I also liek knowing I wa sthe only person to own the system. I dislike knowing that someone else had the system in there possesion and did god knows what with/to it.

True, but from the way many responded after receiving their PS3's from Gamefunk, it sounds like most of them received babied machines. Plus, I don't really wanna be broke completely after getting it. I know I should just WAIT, if I'm gonna be THAT broke after getting it, but I got this sudden urge to wanna get one before the BC models disappear completely.

I just wish to hell my friends friend would hurry their ass up and decide if they want my PS2 or not, since I'd at least be getting $65 from that.

I thought u were waiting until next gen systems were 200 bucks? Maybe that was someone else. Anyway...the 60gb i got from them is in great condition.

You have no income?

Also is there a rush to own a PS3? I'm in the same boat as you. I'd like to have a PS3 right now but is it really worth it to own one right now. There are a few games i'd like to play ( Resistance and Uncharted ), but who knows what kind of PS3 ( New Model ) Sony has in the works right now.

Aren't you in my area, BackInBlack? I think I remembered seeing your location as being Dickson City, PA or something at one point. I really wanted to grab the 60gb one of the local stores has still, but if it's a choice between spending $500 plus tax or just a hair under $400 and having enough for a game still, I'll take the $400 deal.

And yeah, it was me who originally said I 'wasn't gonna get a next gen system till they're $200', but I realized how few of my games I'm playing and I've been playing my one friends PS3 alot lately, so it got me ready to get a new system.

Of course, I'm gonna be playing on an sdtv for now, but eh, I'll get an HDtv eventually.

Oh and antlp89, I originally was selling it to a friend who I could've just taken it to, but still, considering how much I paid for most of the games, I'm still making out.

I do kind of need the money more than I need a PS3, but I've always kinda had my priorities messed up. Plus, unless Sony adds back in the BC via hardware, I doubt I'd want the new model they're coming out with, pimpinc .

I have SOME income, but I'm looking for work in the field I was trained in(medical coder). Only problem with the field I chose to go back to school for is, I have no certification or experience. And, in this field, the places hiring require either certification or experience or a good combination of both. I can't go for the certification test without experience and I can't get the experience without a job to get it. So basically, I'm screwed right now, but without the money I make from working for a few relatives of mine, I'd be completely SOL. Living at home also helps abate many of the bills I'd otherwise have to face.

remember you dont get warranty with used system, so if anything happens after the gamefunk warranty you are screw.

I know, but unless the system at the store near me is discounted somehow(had the employee tell me it was '$500' without taking it out to PC it), I'd be left with about $50-60 to my name. Plus, from the sound of things, the PS3 is a hell of a machine and the ones people have received from Gamefunk seem to be in great shape and work excellent.

Yeah, I know, I could change my priorities and just NOT get it right now, which is why I'm hoping to hell my one friend and her friend actually come through. This is the same friend who was supposed to buy my Xbox n most of my last gen games for $450, but backed out due to tax filing issues. However, I want to have only ONE system at my families house for a while, so I might as well make it a seemingly reliable one, since I don't have the extra room for 2-4 systems cluttering up my room.

That's why I wanted the 60gb, since it plays the PS1 and PS2 games besides the PS3 ones.

See, I've bought a couple used PS2s and this was before I realized how to swap out the lasers or replace them altogether as well as diagnose problems with them. So, assuming the prices on parts keep dropping, it wouldn't be beyond my inquisitive nature to try and fix my own PS3. Plus, I do feel as if I have managed to squeeze all of the value I can out of the stuff I'm selling to afford the PS3, so to me it's almost like an even swap really.

Of course, the local shop where I learned how to fix my own PS2 by watching the owner also buys/sells PS3s now, so I'm sure if I'm there at the right time, I'll learn how to tinker with the PS3 too.

See, I've given it over a year and I'm liking what I'm seeing with the reliability of them, so I'd definitely grab one. I just have to figure out how the heck to dump over $300 onto this prepaid Visa without incurring a fee of $5 or so to buy 2-3 $100 'recharge' cards.

I only use the prepaid ones since I don't want any site to overcharge me and have me be financially responsible for their possible screwup and be without ANY money while they figure it out.

I suggest you buy the new one and save up money for a game. If you really want BC, who knows what Sony is planing in the future. I was going to wait for the white PS3 but I bit on the $299 60g from AAFES/OD/Sonycard. I highly recommend you wait if you don't have a HDTV. PS3 looks good in SD, but once you HD you don't go back. I say wait due to finances and eventual price drop.Buy it new if you really really want it now.

I don't CARE about hd over sd, as long as I get A PICTURE, I'm content. I've seen Spiderman 3 on a BR, the pic is crisper on an hdtv, big whoop.

Once the manufacturers of HDtvs make a reliable and affordable tv in the size I only need(20-22" for my room), THEN I'll get an hdtv.

Till then, I'll be content to play my PS3 I plan on getting on my 20" Panasonic sdtv.

My only concern about buying a PS3 is that I'm starting to see some blu-ray disc diodes start to die in early 60GB models (haven't heard 20GB models though), so that's the only thing that would hold me back from getting it used, especially if it was used a lot. The only main concern I'd have is if it breaks (you never know), probably out of warranty (you need to receipt when in-warranty) and would have to pay $150. But sometimes, getting used isn't too bad.

See, that's really my only issue with trying to get a used system, is the fact that I don't know how many hours the system was used for. But, from what I've seen, many of the people who bought from Gamefunk were happy as could be, even saying that the systems looked barely used.

Though, I know in the end I will probably either end up putting the money to the side and waiting a month or two or just splurging and buying the 60gb model from the local store that has it new still.

Hell, since I've heard that the 80gb models had somewhat decent BC, I'd even try one of those out, if they were to come down to the price of a 40gb model.

Either way, I know I'm getting a PS3, but I know with the semi experimental nature of the BR diodes still that I kind of expected a bit of a malfunction to become big news by now in the PS3s. I'm glad to see it hasn't though, aside from the issue you mentioned, Mana Knight and the issue I heard people had while trying to play COD 4 with the latest firmware. It was something about the PS3 not wanting to read ANY discs after doing something while playing COD 4.

The thing about people happy with Gamefunk, how long have they had their consoles for, a couple of weeks, days? A system can look great aesthetically, but considering the price of the new generation machines, I think a used one is far riskier right now than saving up a few extra bucks and getting one new.

I'm in the market for a PS3 as well, but I cannot buy a used one. Piece of mind is worth the extra coin in the long run, especially in regards to warranty and such. If this was a PS2 thats a different story considering they're much more affordable. I have a target date set for purchase because I get paid twice a month, on the 10th and the 25th, so the 26th of this month is shopping day.

It'd be one thing if the PS3 had been out for 3-4 years already and the price of a new one was something that could easily be handled, but from my perspective I just can't see splurging $360 on something used, that I can get new for $150 more. It just depends on your level of patience. The only positive I can think of to getting it from Gamefunk now is the fact the 60 isnt the easiest thing to come by in the wild, however it's not exactly impossible either.

If you want BC don't mess w/ the 80gb it's pretty bad at it. I'd get the 20 or 60 or if you can live w/o it the 40. I mean it sounds like you made up your mind a while ago.

We were suppose to have the 80GB PS3 BC in general at launch, but since the EE software emulated BC wasn't ready, they gave us hardware BC until it was ready.

PS3's are super reliable, unlike the 360 (no offense to anyone). So buying a used one, as long as it isn't refurbished, should be fine.
PS3's are super reliable
PS3 is reliable, but I seriously wouldn't go that far IMO. I've seen several threads with issues at PSU, but it's the biggest PS3 online fan site I know of.

If you buy it with a credit card, your credit card company might have a provision where it is under warranty from them. If you are that worried about buying used, you could always keep your PS2 and buy a 40GB. I do not know if that is an option for you, but I thought it would be worth it to throw it out there.

I do not think buying a PS3 used is a big deal with the low failure rates and the sturdy construction. $359 sounds like a great deal, and if others are happy with the experience (i.e. the company is not sending out a bunch of lemons), then I say go for it.

Well some of them at neo-geo.com bought one and it looks good, in your case, if you can get replacement blue diode at later point, I'd do it, the parts used (motherboards, chips, etc) in 20 and 60GBs are reportedly made of more expensive parts than 40/80gbs (parts on the mofos are more integrated), and Sony will never (probably never) make another model like 20/60GBs which cost them $800 a unit in reality.

Speaking of old model PS3, is there any place I can find used 20GBs besides eBay? I'm seeing declines of quality and quantity of items and sellers, it looks like their new policies are affecting buyers too. (no legit/good sellers want to deal with them now).

Some Gamestops still have them (there is a thread in the Deals forum with a locator link). Also, if you have some smaller video game shops, they might have them. Pawn shops also might be good. There is always Craigslist (you could always see it before you put the money down).
Build up some Game Rush credit by flipping games and buy a brand new one from there?
There are no Game Rush stores by me, though the one Blockbuster by me DOES take game trades. Unfortunately, all of the local BB stores stopped selling hardware a LONG time ago, back when they still rented out PS2 and Xbox systems.

So, even if I got all of the credit up, I'd be SOL.

Thanks for all your help, my fellow CAGs, I just hope the 60gb model I saw is still at the store I saw it at by the time I go to grab it.

Well, since you're the one who said it, I'll (easily) believe you. Though, I always thought they were super reliable...odd.

IAmTheCheapestGamer,

Let me tell you this...

I bought a 40Gig back in December, and right now I'm REALLY wishing GameFunk was selling these 60G's back then. I hate not having any BC!! Plus it seems like everyone's gotten lightly used, if not almost brand new units from GameFunk. And it seems like they're CS is very good considering the people who've had problems were given refunds/exchanges. I'd say you're in good hands with GameFunk.

Hope you enjoy your PS3 as much as I'm enjoying my gimp (but extremely fun) 40G!

Peace man

I bought my 60 gig from Gamefunk, and don't regret it. I just sold my PS2, BioShock LE, Assassin's Creed, Chrono Trigger, and Guitar Hero and paid it off completely (and had some money left over for a few games)

Trust me, bite on it.

Anyone know if GameFunk will be getting any used 40GB ps3's? I will be quick to bite on that since, the 60gb's are out of stock now..

BC is totally worth it. I don't want to hook up my PSX/PS2, and the games look better on HDTV through a PS3 than they will on their original system.

I'll be honest, when I decided to get my Xbox 360 I went New just because I knew the machine wasn't as durable. The thing still sounds like a jet engine :( Makes me nervous.

But I can tell you our PS3's have had a good success rate. Occassionally we get one that's bunk, but we offer a 30 day warranty. If you buy through our ebay store you can get a square trade warranty, but your final price won't necessarily be as low.

I won't know about the 40GB until Monday. But I know we typically stock more of the 60GB. I uploaded 6 more yesterday (there may only be 4 left) but I'm sure we'll get some more in mid-week.
