Buying in to Skylanders

I'm sorry if there is a better proper topic, but I searched through a lot of Skylanders deal threads.

Anyway, I am thinking of buying a Skylanders game or two.  My wife is really in to Disney Infinity, but I have heard the Skylanders games are actually more fun.  I have more of an intention of buying a character or two and sticking with them through the game/games than buying tons of characters.

What's the best method of keeping it cheap with as few characters as possible while still enjoying the core games?  Which games are the best?

I hear the main advantage of Skylanders over Infinity is you can use the characters in any levels as opposed to DI where they are locked to their own playsets.

Thanks for any advice!

Go get one of each element from the first game at TRU today or tomorrow they are 3.99 each. You will be able to use those guys in all three games. You also only need one "giant" character and that will cover you for the second and third games. As long as you have characters from every element and are playing co-op you can open all the gates in the third game. They only thing you would be missing is a lot of the "zones" in the swap force game since you would need at least 8 different swappable guys.

Just remember any of the original guys will work in all three games.

Also I woukd rank the games in this order.

1. Swap Force
2. SSA
3. Giants

Alright great. Is the $3.99 a very unusual deal or do good skylanders deals happen often? Any suggestion for characters other than elements?

Probably get Spyro, because he's my boy!

Tech- Trigger happy, Drobot

Life- Stealth Elf

Undead- Hex, Cynder

Magic- Spyro

Water- Gill Grunt

Fire- Flameslinger

Earth- Terrafin

Air- Warnado

Giant- Ninjini

These are the ones i like the most

Here's a good thread from a while back with some good info about getting into the game:

Craigslist can be a great way to score a lot of figures for cheap, if you're lucky. I was able to get a ton of them for $50 last year.

My recommendation would be to just get Swap Force. Amazon has the triple character packs and battle packs for $14.99 right now, which is the best price I've seen for them:

If you want to buy an extra Swappable character or two, my favorites are Magna Charge and Rattle Shake. Those can usually be found for MSRP of $15 in most stores without too much trouble. I don't know if there's any good deals going on for the Swappables right now.

If you don't care about unlocking every last Elemental Gate and Swap Zone (which doesn't affect the main story at all), you could probably have a fair bit of fun with it and only spend an extra $30-45 after buying the core game. If you do care about that stuff, then there's certain Swappable guys that you have to buy in order to cover every element and movement type with the least amount of figures.
