Buying preowned consoles

Not sure where to put this, so feel free to move it if necessary. I bought a pre-owned 360 today from a GameStop that had 1 in stock. I get home to find out that it does one of two things, freezes in game or says disc cannot be read. This is a brand new copy of ODST with no scratches. They said I had 30 days to return the console, so my question to anyone that can help is..if they do not have anymore of the same console in stock, will I be able to return the shoddy console at another GameStop for the same product?

if they dont have any in stock id assume they will either give you a refund or store credit. never buy a used 360 hell id even say never buy a used ps3 this gen of gaming is very faulty.

Take it back and splurge on a new console. Between RROD/E74 and Microsoft banning modded consoles from Live, it's just not worth the hassle and risk of getting a dud.

After reading countless "wrap mine in a towel and hope it doesn't red ring again when I bring it in" posts in the $100 Arcade Amazon/Wal-mart threads, it seems like every 360 traded into Gamestop is on life support.

Best advice: bring it back to the store with no more in stock so you can get your money back.

I would just get store credit and get something new. Sometimes used consoles are not the way to go. You never know how refurbished or what has gone wrong on them.

It's best to ask to see if you can get a brand new 360, when returning the system(though you would have to pay the difference). Some GS stores allow it, since they'll just mark the console defective and issue store credit. That way you have a 3 year warranty and the system has a brand new disc drive.

So basically any console not made by Microsoft? Guess you never went through more than one PS1, PS2 or PS3? Sony's notorious for making horrible disc drives too.

I've heard that Sony consoles usually have horrible disc drives but I must say, I've never had any problems with my PS1 and I've only had to get one new PS2. My Sony systems have lasted a loooooong time. I got my PS1 in 1996 and it still works perfectly, though the PS2 I bought at launch did die a few months ago ('twas the disc drive), I was able to pick a new one up on the cheap (another launch-day console) and it's working great, too.

Best living console though has to be anything made by Nintendo. My mom still has a launch NES that works.

Fixed. My one buddy went through like 6-8 PS2's last gen and I went through 3-6 PS1's, so Sony isn't exactly the best console maker in the world and now with the YLOD and other issues with launch PS3's popping up I'm inclined to exclude Sony from that list of three.

And before you can respond saying 'you and he must've abused the shit outta your consoles to go through so many', know that we both babied the hell out of them and they STILL failed.

I still say the original Xbox after the first revision was a fairly sturdy device. I mean, I have 4 of them (1 my brother has now), and they are still running strong.

RETURN IT AND BUY A NEW ONE. The Xbox 360 is not a console that you should buy REFURBISHED or PRE-OWNED. When you buy the product, ask yourself, why would someone get rid of this????? Besides, the new Xbox 360 consoles contain the Jasper chipset. This console uses less electricity than the Xenox and Falcon models and the Jasper has more cooling pads to prevent your Xbox from overheating. I hope you choose to go with my advice. Its better to be safe than sorry.

Very true! Never buy used consoles from GS ESPECIALLY the company REFURBISHED ones.
Dude i work at GS, you have 7 days to return it if you dont like it and you have 30 days to return it if its defective, which in your case it is. I suggest you used that $ towards a new one. Tell them the problems your having and tell them you want a new one. Just be nice because a lot of GS employees are D-bags and will give you the run around. So hurry up and return it you have 30days LOL...if you have any questions PM me :)

As everyone else has said, just bring it back and buy a new console. The $60 you saved by buying used one isn't worth the headaches. Even if you stumble upon a console that is currently working, it will likely die within the year, and then you're gonna be stuck.

You know, maybe this is just me but...I try not to buy consoles used. Especially from places like Gamestop. It has to be something completely retro and rare, no other way to get it kind of thing for me to consider buying a console used. Video games used, no problem. But I'm picky like that, not buying used consoles and accessories like controllers.

I had a friend that worked in a used Mom and Pop type video game store and he used to tell me horror stories about consoles they took in trade. Besides most of them being dirty, the worst console he ever seen actually worked when they took it in for trade. They left on the counter in the back room, and when they went back later to clean it up for sale, roaches crawled out it. Ewww. Plus they would refurbish consoles, and he told me they would find all kinds of wierd things inside them once they cracked them open for repair (cart based consoles would have food, used cigarettes, and the occasional joint stuck in them. Disc based consoles would usually have things like credit cards, kids baseball and Pokemon type cards stuffed in them).

And if I bought a used console from Gamestop and it died before the 30 days were up, you can be damned sure I would take it back. Take it back and buy a new one!

Wow! That's gross! Yea man some people don't know how to take care of their stuff...I've found some stuff when people trade in their systems...my co-worker found a porno once, I usually find non adult movies. But at my store we are ultra picky...if something is really nasty looking we refuse it lol I'm not gonna touch other peoples nasty crap! Ewww...
