I just lost 2% of my money today because of AMD. I think I understand now why the advice "Don't sell just because your stock tanks" is so prevalent among all the finance tutorials I've read. It's hard not to sell it all when you see it dropping day after day. OTOH that put contract I got yesterday gained 26%. To bad I only bought 1...

I've decided to try another strategy since the market is doing so bad right now. I'm gonna sell 3/4 of my portfolio and start selling short in hopes of making some money. I've got some companies in mind that I think will keep dropping. I'm going to start utilizing limit orders too. I learned that the hard way today. Looks like I'll have to put off making a video game portfolio until later.

BTW Wubb, I just realized I was rushing home from work today so I could put in some orders before the market closed. I've also cut back on playing F.E.A.R. so I would have more time for this game instead. Best. Thread. Ever.

PS Anyone know when the Feds will announce whether they will raise interest rates or not?

If the dow drops down to around 10860 (it's rolling average) expect hell on these days if they raise the rate.
 
Finally joined up... I think my first trades will be with Hasbro and Pepsi, just like I used to pretend to trade when I was 10 :D

And throw in some Nintendo because... why not?
 
Look at how much the market dropped just because the chairman maybe suggested theymight raise rates again. I believe if they did plan on raising it before then they probably changed their minds about it now. At least, I believe enough to buy some stocks with pretend money later this month. I think I'll wait until after the announcement before buying stocks with real money. :)
 
Hopefully the markets will start to rally, but I really think this Fed is set on raising rates at least one more time to try and curb inflation, I expect the market to tank after that announcement, which is why I've been buying a lot of puts.
 
LOL, I just noticed that one of the stocks I bought last week has almost doubled in value... bought in at $1.80, closing price was $2.15 on Friday, and after hours trading brought it up to $3.38 (glad I bought 15k shares). Now if only I had bought this stock in real life...

Anyway, I'm currently #1 in the rankings, and on Monday's opening, I should solidify that place, :). I'm stoked!

Secured close to $17k in profit today... I think I may sell all my positions and sit the rest of the tournament out, :).

My PG purchase looks like it was made at almost the bottom ($53.11) of the dip; hopefully, it continues its trend up for 2 months.

Quick question: is there a way to hide my portfolio holdings from others in the game? I mean, this is a competition, so I'd rather not disclose my holdings.
 
I don't think so, but don't know for sure. If anyone shadows your buys just ridicule him here and we will all taunt him a second time.

Last week was brutal and stocks are down BIG again today. Wow.

Oh, and you do know it's a competition to see who can get to $0 first, right?

I have. I had a few trades queued for today and none of them went through. I hope they go through for tomorrow.
 
I haven't had a chance to buy anything yet and I'm in 6th place. Maybe I'll stay this way and win the competition :D

I have to find some time to buy some stock...

My first set of options expired worthlessly last Friday. Woot!!!

Actually a few were probably worth a bit, but I completely forgot to log on and cash them out. :lol:
 
Anybody know why jeffreyjrose is tied with himself (x2) at the top? I figured that would work itself out, but it's been a week or so. Guess you get what you pay for. :lol:

I saw that myself. It says he's tied 3 times with himself on my login.

No matter what I do, I cannot turn a profit. Good thing this is fake money.

I saw that too... perhaps I joined multiple times? I've tried figuring out how to fix it, but under "My Competitions", it only lists CheapGamer once. I'm afraid to hit "Leave Competition" since it may reset me to $100,000 if I want to restart, :(. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
 
It looks like a glitch on their site to me. I wouldn't worry about it. Have you been listed 3 times since day 1?

Unfortunately, yes. Coincidentally, my professor just started a competition in my finance class! (and I'm only listed once, yea!) I don't believe I'll be able to get so lucky on returns the second time around... :cry:
 
Wow, shot from the basement up to near the top. Options are freaking volatile. For example my portfolio is down 8% just today.
 
Jeffreyjrose may be at the top but I think wubb has earned the most money of all of us. Last time I looked at the listing, he was in dead last with less then $90,000. Now he is at number 6.

:rofl: In my finance class, over half the class hasn't placed a trade 3 weeks into the class- no one wants to be the guy at the bottom! In that game, I'm getting slammed with Lowe's. Down around 8% in a few days time...
 
I've been short selling every stock that people in this thread complain about. hehehe

I haven't been able to access my portfolio in the last few days though. Anyone else having any problems?
 
I just checked my portfolio today after about a week and I've jumped up to 3rd. :)

I'm glad I decided to short Apple and AMD since that's where most of my money came from (~$6000). Looks like I may have a chance to win this after all.
 
jjr might have this one in the bag, but still close to a month left. Way to claw your way out of the basement cletus. I'm not firmly back in the basement. :lol:
 
I need to break even on a few things. . .

Once a few stocks jump back up to over $20, I'll cash them out and be doing alright. I'm down -0.81% but up $3,455.50. Some things just need to level out, hopefully!
