CAG Video Game/Toy Drive for Child's Play Charity
I don't relish the idea of receiving yearly donation requests ("Wouldn't you like to participate in THIS year's Child's Play drive?") ...that is one common consequence of contributing to drives like this. Another is that you often start receiving mass mailings from every charitable organization under the Sun after you contribute to one. Long-term junk mail can follow a kind gesture in this day and age, and they have a way of finding your address from the merest whiff of your personal information online (it's almost spooky.) Is there a way those of us who would like to contribute could do so, while staying below this Charity Radar? (read: could I just email you what I've ordered from their Wish List and have you be the front man, CheapyD? I don't need credit or unending junk mail. That way, only you associate my email addy with this. ...and they only get you, that way. )
The folks at Penny-Arcade read your post and responded:
"Please reassure your guys that we don't give away or sell addresses
We probably won't even email people next year about Child's Play 2005."

I pitched in some cash...after all the money that CAG has saved me in the past year, this is the very least I could do. I hope I can give more in the coming weeks. This is a great idea and a great cause.

Total raised: $283.50 - updated 11/11 12:20PM EST

Great job guys, this total inspired me to give a little more. We are so close to $300, lets keep helping these little CAGs out.

$300 is a nice milestore. That being said, I am not impressed with the number of users contributing.
There have only been 22 gifts (one was incredibly generous) so far. That is kind of embarassing for a website that gets tens of thousands of visitors. Even the lamest thread in off topic will have 22 replies rather quickly.

I realize that this is Cheap Ass central, but I had honestly expected a much better response especially since it's so easy to give 1 or 2 bucks with PayPal.

Oh well, such is life.

man. We got off to a great start, but it's already started to slow down. C'mon people. We have over 200,000 registered users! Just $1 for each of you will bring in $200,000. Think of all the money you guys have saved from this site.
to anyone that dosent have paypal, you get $5 for signing up, $5 is a pretty good donation in itself! so if you dont have paypal at all sign up and send the free cash!!
*hint*hint*

for all the good deals we get from this place the least we can do is donate a buck or two and get our name out there even more. I was one of the first to donate and encourage everyone else to help out this great cause

About 22,000 not 200,000 users, but still a dollar from each would go a long ways.
Didn't we have a contest because CAG reached 200,000 registered users? The prize was 200,000 pennies to use at VGD.com?

200,000 pennies would equal to $2,000 but the price was $200 hence we have only 20,000+ users

Excellent. Thanks for the response, Penny-Arcade! :D

I know we can't give used games directly to the charity but what about auctioning off the used games? Users can donate used games. And instead of paying it to the user they can pay directly towards the charity and cheapy can give the okay to ship. Just an idea, not sure if its been suggested yet or not.

what is the last day on this?

I am waiting on my mom to tell me they are having another 1/2 off electronics sale at Goodwill (They have several copies of Tekken 4 )

Does this count people that have bought or sent in games/toys off the Amazon wish lists? If so, you're right that is damn sad!

I was very against posting a list of contributors, so here's your chance to stick it to chickenhawk. If the only reason you are not contributing is because you won't get any credit for it, contribute now! I will MATCH whatever is contributed within the next 2 hours up to a certain amount that I will email to CheapyD. Contribute now people!! Help some kids!!!!

I contributed 10 minutes before you posted this, would that still count?

I told Cheapy to give me the number so if he includes it, then yes. I have no problem including your contribution. I hope others follow suit.

Even better, just auction/sell the games yourself and send in the money.
OR
Create a thread in the trading section and mark it with [Child's Play Charity] so users know the money goes to charity.

I was thinking more along the lines of an offical auction thread for the charity where you can compile a list of donated games with a set shipping price and have people bid on them. The money would go directly to charity paypal account and you or someone else would just let the seller know that the item was paid for and its okay to ship. This way we could avoid problems with shipping price or god forbid someone claiming it was for charity and not donating. But now that I think about it, it might be too much work.

Yeah, if I chained myself to the computer (even though I kind of am already) that would work...I'd prefer to have you guys do the work yourselves.

Come on people!! If you don't get crackin' I'm going to be able to buy more games for myself!!! Contribute and put me in game buying limbo for a couple months!!!!

I sure hope the 22 does not count if you gave more than once since I have given twice and I am sure others have also. I am surprised that it has slowed down so much when there are so many of us on this site every day.

Hope I was in time to get the donation matched, just donated $3.18, what's left in my bank account pretty much. I'm not an active CAG member but that doesn't matter. I'm probably too late, but once I get my paycheck I can match myself again ;p

Hey CAG's! Just saw Chickenhawk's post of matching donations for the weekend so i decided to donate again for this worthy cause. I encourage everyone to do the same and make this holiday season special for some truly deserving children.

alright, damn super saving shipping, i got Lion King on DVD, and a Dr Suess book for childrens hospital in oakland, i had no paypal, so it was the best i could do. remember to get books too!!!

when is the last day for this? i don't get paid again until this coming friday and i am broke right now. i would have to give the money to my parents since i don't have paypal, but if it is still open this coming friday, i will donate $5 since i have to pay car insurance as well.

That is just awesome ChickenHawk. I will be donating this weekend, so nice to know that I will get double the bang for the money that is donated. :D

I also agree with you on the list issue. For those that want the list, shall I out you for all the charities you do not donate to? Some people donate to many charities and have budgeted accordingly and maybe do not have extra to give. Or they just can't for many other reasons right now. Or they just don't care. Whatever the reason is though is of their concern and not your's. The list just comes across as a way for you trumpet yourself. It's great that you are excited about this particular charity, it really is, but do not let your overzealous attitude get the better of good judgement.

I actually didn't have any money in my paypal amount, so I am adding money since you can't take credit cards. Is there any way this could be matched still? It will take 3 or 4 days for my bank to deposit the money.

I agree that the list isn't a good idea since that isn't what charity is about. I felt that way too at first. When I found out that only 22 out of 20,000 people donated though, that changed my mind. I understand that due to other factors, some people may not be able to donate to this charity at the moment, which is not a big deal and none of our business. But I am 99% sure that there are way more people out there than just 22 people that could spare a dollar or two. The way I think of it is, I am just donating the money that wouldn't have otherwise saved if I hadn't known about this site. I'm sure CAG has saved many people a lot of money so the least we can do is give it a good name by donating to these hospitals.

well 22 isn't that bad, a lot of people don't have paypal, i sure dont. and using a CC or so to buy off amazon and send directly to them is another EASY option. you really have to take in account those people too.
well 22 isn't that bad, a lot of people don't have paypal, i sure dont. and using a CC or so to buy off amazon and send directly to them is another EASY option. you really have to take in account those people too.
once again.. it is out of 20,000. I realize that most ppl don't have paypal but there has to be more than 22.

see now i understand that people do donate to other charities, and thats great!

however there is a huge constant user base here..hell, there are more than 100 people over 1k posts now, people use this site alot for both their benefit and enjoyment, so why not give a little back when asked? i mean even if you gave to other charities is a dollar or 2 gunna hurt you THAT much?

not that everybody should be expected to donate, just, the low turnout is kinda sad

damn you chickenhawk, I had to donate again now because of your deal. Doubling my money was just a deal I could not pass up. Really good what you are doing.

i wasn't talking about donating to other charities, im talking about donating in another way, by buying stuff directly from amazon and having them ship it

For the people who do not have a paypal account this is the perfect opportunity to open one, Paypal will give you $5 and that would be a perfect donation. Just open an account even if you never use it, the free cash from Paypal to help these kids is worth it.

Even though Chickenhawk's offer for the weekend is officially over, I'm donating again because that number of only 22 people makes me absolutely sick. This site has saved me so much money in such a short time, and it's time for all of us to pay that karma back. It's for the kids for Christ's sake!
