CAGcast #315: PS4 and So Much More!

Didn't it went up?

Anyways it looks like the Xbox team was watching the event closely. I can understand Sony not wanting to unveil the box and more detailed information until MS show's what they got cooking. Kaz Hirai did say "Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?". Sony did a smart move by announcing the PS4 and not exactly showing it. Now devs and consumers can begin talking about it while MS is still as clueless as us about what Sony's technical specs are.
Except they released the specs, didn't they?
Except they released the specs, didn't they?
• Main Processor: Single chip custom processor. CPU is an x86-64 AMD "Jaguar", 8 cores. GPU is an AMD next-generation Radeon graphics engine rated at 1.84 teraflops with 18 unified Compute Units.
 • Memory: 8GB GDDR5 with 176GB/s bandwidth.
 • Hard Drive: Built-in
 • Optical Drive (read only): BD 6x CAV, DVD 8x CAV
 • I/O: Super-Speed USB 3.0, Aux (for PS4 Eye)
 • Communication: Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 (EDR)
 • AV Output: HDMI, Analogue AV out, optical digital audio output
^Those are the specs Sony has confirmed but the only concrete information is the memory, optical drive, I/O, communication, and av ouput. CPU and GPU are not specific enough to give MS much to go on.

Yeah... no desire for PS4.

I already have a PS3 and it fills my high def gaming needs and blu-ray requirements.

Like Nintendo, Sony will have a difficult time convincing the gaming public they need a new system.

Also, something that could help with remembering the Ni no Kuni name is to just eschew it entirely and refer to it by it's subtitle, Wrath of the White Witch or Ni: Wrath of the White Witch.

Shipwreck said that the Dualshock 4's lightbar thing was what the 360 controller has now... no, it's not. The 360 controller's lights indicate what player you are, yes - but the Dualshock 3 already has this indication as well. There's 4 lights on the top of the controller (near L1) that indicate what player you are. This lightbar thing is something totally different. I think what Sony means is that the color will change based on what literal color your in-game character is or something. I don't know - it sounds unnecessary. I'm not defending the feature, I'm just saying that it's something the 360 does not have currently.

I laughed when Cheapy pretty much dismissed Wombat watching a documentary about The Eagles. 'It's not obscure enough,' is what I imagined him thinking. Especially after he raved about Searching for Sugar Man not too long ago. 'The only movies I like are documentaries, obscure and depressing.'

"You shouldn't care about games coming out. Just buy them when they are released and play them. You will be better off." - Confucius Cheapie in the month of February in the year 2013

So f'n true!

Man I used to be a CAGcast diehard but my enjoyment of the show lately is limited.

I used to be a Wombat defender but he really grates on me lately. He's so self-obsessed you can almost hear him singing the meow mix song to fill the time before everyone else shuts up and he can talk again. It's laughable how he falls over himself to tell you how me met some developer or saw a demo at some event... you're playing what? Oh I know that game .. me me me me ME! Maybe I didn't notice or wasn't bothered by Wombat before since he was kind of a secondary voice on the show but since he started his own podcast he's switched over to host Wombat mode and has more or less commandeered the CAGcast. I guess this is the ambitious, bringing his A-game Wombat. I think I prefer the beaten down, satisfied with feeding on scraps Wombat.

Cheapy is fine. His passion for gaming seems a bit lukewarm lately. Does he only play driving and indie PC games now?

Shipwreck actually plays games so that gives him 1,000 bonus points over his co-hosts. On the other hand he seems a lot more cynical than before which has bothered me lately.

Well, just one man's opinion! I wanted to get that off my chest for some reason. Been listening to the show for 5 years or so.

@Jasper

I believe you are correct on both points. :applause: Yes, the original sixaxis--like the 360 light wheel--had a light corresponding to which player 1 through 4 you are in game. And, yes, this will carry over to the 'move lightbar' insomuch (for example if you're playing Madden) that the circle under the player you're playing as in game will be the same color as the move lightbar color glowing on the dualshock controller you're using so that it is easier to tell who is who ingame.

Eventually the Wii U games pile up and the price drops and voila, the system is attractive.

Right now, in addition to what Ship said, a lot of people think the Wii U is just a Wii bundle like a Wii with a uDraw packaged in or something.

Yes it isn't going to be a western AAA console. But it isn't going to die out like a Dreamcast either. Nintendo isn't losing a ton of money on the thing so they wont be forced to abandon it anytime soon. One game sold per Wii U and they make money according to Reggie.

There is good reason to buy ports on the Wii U even if you have the other systems. The split screen play is better. You can play the game on the controller when you or someone else wants to watch tv. The online play is free and everyone can have their own account. And the ports will have some additional controller features.
What do you think Xbox has to do to one up Playstation?
Assuming the leaked specs are true (they almost certainly are), they can't "beat" them from a hardware standpoint.

But most of the games will be multi-platform which would mitigate that.

The rumors about "always on" net requirement and the used games thing are not getting them off on the right foot.

Will MS's first party games be more compelling than Sony's? And will whatever multimedia/social functionality they have cooked up be more desirable than Sony Share?

Does Wombat grind your gears?

There sure is a lot of negativity in this thread. Can't wait to hear what comments get read out next week. I personally thought this was definitely one of the more focused shows in a while and that probably has a lot to do with there being something to talk about. I can understand some listener frustration that Cheapy, Shipwreck, and Wombat didn't watch all sixteen hours of the unveiling but I'd rather not hear 90 minutes of speculation on a console that may not even deliver on most its promises. Remember all the talk about what the Kinect was going to be like after Microsoft showed someone scanning in a skateboard? It's all silly talk at this point with the PS4.

Maybe I'm just as jaded as Wombat but I'm not as excited for a next generation console just yet. I can't see myself getting excited over better graphics when I still haven't experienced some of the best games of this console cycle. As for the features of the next-gen consoles, all I can see them as unfortunately are possibilities that may not even work correctly or be present at launch. For me the next-generation of consoles will begin in 2014 when there's good games to play and all the bugs have been worked out of the new systems.

Oh, and if "incredible device" can't be used to describe the 3DS, then "disaster" can't be used to describe the PS3. I think that's being really melodramatic.
What did we do to offend you? I'm very curious, since you hate us every week. (That reads meaner than I meant it. I just don't understand what we did that was so bad this week. We liked it and thought they did a good job.)
I'm not offended by anything that was said on the show. I think you got me confused with another member. I don't hate you guys at all. This is the only podcast that I can stand to listen to. Much better than other shows where they talk and laugh (loud as hell into the mic) at their own jokes.

I think that ,metallicoholic said it best... "If 'incredible device' can't be used to describe the 3DS, then 'diaster' cant be used to describe the PS3."

Cheapyd really brought the Hater-aid this week.
Skyfall: Awesome movie. Best Bond movie since Goldeneye. Apparently only yuppy indie movies about some guys used kleenex collection can make his A list.

PS4: Sounds like it will be great. Anyone who jumps right in on XBOX720 is a fool with all the RRODs and the xbox Vista dashboard updates, I will wait a year.

Love you guys!

Yup, got my names mixed up. Sorry about that. Yeah, "disaster" was a bit of a stretch.

I don't see Wombat using that share button. I'm sure he doesn't needs anymore people messaging him to tell him he sucks at games.

Casino Royal: I thought the beginning was good and the ending was good, but there was a lot of boring in the middle. I know this goes against the grain, but I thought Quantum of Silence was a much better action/Bond movie.

As some one who never bought a PS3 the PS4 reveal gave me no reason to pick it up. It seemed like a prettier version of the PS3 which I did not buy. If all the rumors are true the 360 will be close in specs so there is no real incentive for me to pick up a PS4

Everybody is expecting so much from sony, i was happy with presentation..A guy in this thread said the only shock was a game released on pc a year ago..really did you watch it?

Hmm i was suprised by quite a few things IF YOU actually have patience to watch and listen. People just love to highlight the negative and completely ignore the positive..infamous new son, knack .killzone shadows fall looks amazing, drive club and deep down (whoa really?00)) All that and that was day 1..we still got alot of game shows to go. Then people are mad at no new experience in ps4? Did they see the rock show by media molecule. We are barely scratching the surface of what this beast can do.

Microsoft needs to make faulty hardware again for you people.

Cheapy, I know you are a big fan of Rock Band, so was wondering what you think about the fact that the only way to play it will be to keep this gen's consoles. Will you keep your Xbox just for the occasional game of Rock Band?

I played the crap out of 1 & 2, and a fair amount of 3, but generally don't take it out unless I'm with a group of friends. I still think the group experience is singularly awesome and unlike anything else, and I'm thinking I will probably hold on to my 360 for at least a year longer to wring the last out of that game.

Shipwreck mentioned a music game with Kinect-like "air" instruments... that would totally lose against the fun of beating on a physical drum, playing a fake guitar, etc.

I know the day of the music game is over, but it's a lot of hardware to hold onto for the nostalgia of playing it occasionally.

wow, so I'm just about finished with the show and I think you guys are getting some undeserved hate. I think you guys are spot on with your Wii U impressions. If I was an investor in Nintendo I'd be concerned that they've lost their console touch, it may be time to stick solely to handhelds.

Good show but I think you guys missed a great new release on PC and haven't talked about it yet that I've hard: ANTICHAMBER. Basically, a lower budge Portal-type game but it's awesome and head scratching at times. Any impressions?

I would love for RB to somehow continue on into the next gen. The games and dlc most likely will not be BC for PS4 or 720, but it would be cool if Harmonix made a Rock Band/Dance Central channel. Pay your money, get all the songs for x amount of time.

Except the old controllers won't work with next gen. Dammit

You could say the same exact thing about the change from PS2/Xbox to PS3/360, right? I have all my old Guitar Hero stuff for PS2, though I almost never play it anymore...

I've got to agree with Wombat that having a headset jack on the PS4 controller is a big deal. One of the big reasons I prefer Xbox Live over PSN (and consequently buy 95% of multiplatform games on 360) is that everybody has a headset. Sure, it means that those annoying 12 year olds also have headsets but that's what mute is for. If everybody who buys a PS4 will have a headset that doesn't need to be charged, some form of party chat that's equivalent to XBL's party chat is available, and PS+ remains to be such a good value, I could see myself becoming a PS4-primary type of guy next generation (if only they could make the PS4 controller have offset sticks like the 360 controller!).

I thought the PS4 meeting was interesting but I didn't see anything that got me excited about the PS4 as piece of equipment. I'm not interested in broadcasting my gaming activities to the world. I'm definitely not interested in getting a console with built in cameras and microphones since I mostly game in my bedroom...both from a privacy standpoint and the fact that I don't have room (nor desire) for any kinect like gaming either, so I feel I'm just being forced to buy features I don't want. For me, I didn't see anything to change my mind that my next hardware purchase will be for a small PC to be used for gaming exclusively. I think there will be a minimal number of console exclusives on this next generation of hardware and I suspect that I can easily get by not playing them...I didn't like any of the previous killzone games and after the snoozefest of Halo 4, I'm done with that series as well.

Given Cheapy's shift to mostly the PC side of things over the last 18 months or so, did Cheapy see anything to make him think his gaming PC will be the item gathering dust in his living room in 2014?

Love the show guys, first commenter here... This one was a very good episode, I dunno why so much hate in the comment section.

I think the PS Plus sales/free games was blown out of proportion... I mean it's the same with Steam, I don't buy any games near an upcoming holiday because I know there's gonna be a discount coming... this is cheapassgamer isn't it?
Yeah its annoying when you buy something and then it's free... Tell that to the bunch of people that bought Orange Box on steam to get Team Fortress 2 and the it went Free-to-play...

So Wombat, have you seen 'House of Cards'? It's on Netflix and I think its great TV, maybe borrow an account and watch it?

Wombat, a couple episodes ago, you mentioned a book you were reading about Batman. I can't find the podcast, so I was hoping you could repeat the name of the book.

In that vein, have you read Sean Howe's Marvel Comics: The Untold Story? I "checked" it out of the library last week (I love books I can check out digitally) and am about halfway through. It's interesting as hell; of course the Kirby vs Lee and the tyranny of Jim Shooter is well known, but there's a lot of fascinating behind-the-scenes stuff. I recommend it if you haven't read it already.

During the late 1920's, ladies got tired of putting on layers of garments material daily and decided to use a much more comfortable, loose dress for some time, as a result the birthed of flapper outfits. Throughout that time, lots of people were dismayed incidentally; it shows of even more skins and disclosing a great deal of the leg component.
