The RSS for the full CAGcast catalog is broken. I don't know how you are generating it, but the XML declaration in cagcastfull.xml on FeedBurner is appearing on line 2 of the file. It needs to be right at the beginning of the file. Every web browser I use just throws an XML Parsing Error instead of rendering the page.

(The other feed is fine.)

It was nice to actually hear a discussion on the 3DS. However, I still think Cheapy isn't considering the whole picture. He's only concerned with marketing to kids, but Nintendo's market is much wider than that. It certainly sounds like a more appealing option to parents/kids, but you're probably taking from anyone older than 10.

I want a limited edition PS4 Cheap Ass Gamer Wombat Controller. It uses the controller speaker to do a random Batman impression every 5 minutes.

Wombat, a Harmony remote works great with the Xbox One. I have two activities set up for it "Watch TV" where all the video controls are for the cable box and "Play Xbox" which changes everything to control the Xbox menus. Since the inputs are the same, pressing the activity buttons switches controls over instantly. Highly recommend for yours and your family's sanity :)

Cheapy, hearing the story of you having lunch with an Icelander (Icelandic?) and Chinese listener reminded me another thing I have to add on my must-do list for my Japan next month: meeting my favourite C-list podcasting celebrity to talk games and culture! Any chance you can squeeze in a meet-up with a Mexican-American-Spanish fan in August?

And on that note, do you have a stickie somewhere on the site with some of your favourite places to eat (not Tokyo America club haha) or to buy Batman collectibles?

I like to play metrovania games while eating saaasauges in my gararge :p

Also a bit disturbed by the gang wanting to see games involving dogs fighting eachother.  Its a gross thing regardless of whether its in space or on earth.

I'm really surprised to hear that Shipwreck enjoyed the "art of video games" exhibit as much as he did. I checked it out in Phoenix a few months ago and was severely disappointed.

Selecting four games to represent each console based on those terrible categories (Target???) led to some really bizarre choices, like LotR: Battle for Middle-Earth 2 representing the Xbox 360. That normally wouldn't be enough to ruin an entire exhibit, except... there was hardly anything else there! There were no interesting examples of how art in video games has evolved, or how games could be considered art.

The fact that the gift shop was filled with stacks of the curator's own book, coupled with a ridiculously high entrance fee, really illuminated what the whole thing was about: some guy making money off his half-assed game collection.

The Toledo Art Museum is free. I enjoyed hearing the short stories about the various games even if some of them weren't blockbusters. The four categories have structure to the exhibit even if stuff like LOTR: Whatever was there. It just showed how tactical games weren't a major genre on that generation of consoles. It's a concise look at gaming's evolution over the past 40+ years.

We're less than an hour from Toledo so hopefully we can stop by the art museum one of these next few weekends.

When Wombat was talking about meleeing guys for t-shirts I thought he was referring to E3.

Destiny on Xbox 360 looks and plays great. I'm sure it looks better on the new systems but it works pretty damn good on last gen too.

You can buy this thing Shipwreck to easily wire your PS4 and other systems: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWRUIY4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It uses your electrical system wires to connect your system to your router. It even works in surge protector outlets. Bought one after I bought my PS4 since the Wi-fi is crap for the system. Even bought one for my 360 after it worked so great for my PS4.
I just setup a similar system this weekend after getting sick of dismal wifi. Works great. I used http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008F537KC/ and http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DQN3R80/. Zero configuration, just plugged them in and it worked.

Chances are that most of the money went straight back into the museum. They are always in need of funding. They usually survive on grants and fundraisers and aren't profit centers.

49:48: "Where are we? What are we talking about?" - Cheapy D.

Yeap that's how I felt about this episode lol. Love you guys though.

There is a very good reason indeed to buy digital if you are in my situation.

My brother and I like to play the same games, usually FPSs.

If I buy the physical copy, I must buy two in order to play together. (We each have a PS4)

If I buy the digital copy, I can download it on both PS4s and we can both play at the same time. This means I only have to buy ONE copy.

So, two physical copies = $120

      One digital copy       = $60

I know we could buy two copies and then sell them back when we are done.

So, $120 - $40 (if we sell each for $20) = $80, plus a lot of work selling two copies. (I refuse to go to Gamestop)

Usually we only buy games we plan on playing for at least a year.

I won't even go into how my living in South Korea made for me buying GTAIV digitally.

Just a few points..

Cross buy / play between the Wii U and 3DS (and future nintendo consoles) should be a must. It's strange to me why this isn't a thing. Although the Vita hasn't done well I am guarantee cross buy has shifted many Vita systems.

$100, 200 is still too much for kinect. Face it theres 1) next to no games for kinect 2) the few games control badly. Xbox should redesign the a smaller kinect which is just used for Skype, apps and system control.

There are prons and cons for retail vs digital but the main thing for me is retail is cheaper and has better deals. Its so odd that digital games are the same price most of the time. Makes me not want to bother going digital for the same price I get - trade in options, lend to friends / family.

Do any of you really have kids?  Maybe you live in Bizarro world?  I live in CA and at my child's elementary school most of the kids have 3DS and many have Wii U.  I did a presentation for the 2nd grade and used some slides of Nintendo games and all the kids started talking about their favorite games?  Were they Leapfog games?  Xbox or Sony?  Nope....it was either iPad/iPhone or Nintendo.  The 3DS has a large foothold in the elementary schools and Nintendo is still very popular.

And who buys these games for the kids?  You're right, it's the parents.  I bought my kid all the Leapfrog systems (they're great!) but also a DS since about 2-3.  I would have stuck with the Leapfrog but when all the other kids are getting Nintendo it's hard not to cave in and buy what your kid really wants.  The % of parents who never give in to their child's wants is very small.  And most of those kids wind up in foster care.

Would having some educational value help Nintendo sell more units?  Sure....there is that small % of parents who wouldn't buy a 3DS without the educational value.  For the rest of us, a crying kid is all that it takes.  The problem is that Nintendo is not going after that 1%, they're going after the 99% of crying kids.  And it's working for them.

BTW...there were plenty of DS educational games, many really good games.  And you can still play them on your new 3DS.  But besides Brain Age, were any of them the reason that the DS was such a big hit?

The comment that kids must be able to read to really play these games is silly.  Anyone who has a kid knows that they'll figure it out to have fun or if they get stuck then they've got parents to ask.  "What's this?  What's this say?  Tell me that.  What's that?"  x100  Even American adults play Japanese games that they can neither read nor understand, but they have a choice so not a lot of adults do this.  A first grader doesn't have a choice to play a game they can read or one they can't read;  they can't read them all.  So if the choice is to play a game they can't read or play no game at all, what do you think your child's choice will be?

You've all been put on parental probation.

"Well, right now I'm wearing absolutely nothing"

Now that's an image. A hairy Jewish guy hanging in his computer chair (presumabely) scratching his balls through his koshered tighty whiteys lol

Probably to avoid pissing off physical retail partners. Why would I want to take the risk bulk ordering and stocking a $60 dollar game at my chain of stores when the publisher is trying to undercut me with digital? It's funny that wombat should mention the 10% cheaper price for digital as fairly regularly PSN cards are on sale for $45 (and I know xbox point cards used to always be on sale), which works out to a 10% discount.

Another benefit to digital is it is a check against aftermarket price gouging for niche games that were sold in lower quantities. Some collector's would love to have that physical suidoken disc or Earthbound cart, but most probably just want to play the damn game without having to pay a hefty sum. As digital becomes more popular I wouldn't be surprised if they start printing fewer physical disc runs of niche and middle tier titles so they don't have a glut of them left over to clearance. A company doesn't have to worry about under printing and missing out on sales because if someone wants the game and a physical copy is not available they can always purchased it digital.

In terms of Destiny's success, in this day in age of mega budgets it's hard to tell what is a success anymore. What was it, 4 million Bioshock Inifinites and 6 million Tomb Raider Reboots weren't considered sales successes?

@Cheapy the hearthstone expansions has alot to do with the new cards that you can unlock through the naxxramus content the new cards are pretty insane. If you want to know more about each card you should really check out this video. http://youtube.com/watch?v=ifOKmq32nSM

Cagcast Crew:

For the second week in a row (and for perhaps the 4th show ever) I find myself in line with Wombat's points.  A material issue with marketing something to parents for their kids is whether the kids will actually use it.  While the concept of a learning driven handheld sounds good, it likely won't be a hit with the kids.  As a result parents won't buy it.

To put it in Cagcast terms:  If Shipwreck were to find a zero calorie, no-fat hot dog, he would probably realize ahead of time that it would not be worth his $2.00 to try it out.

To Wombat's point, if selling 200,000,004 pieces of software (the last few represented by Shipwreck's Best Buy purchases) is profitable, then maybe there is nothing that Nintendo actually needs to fix.

Before the final minutes, my guess for the title's context was "Thanks for heading to the Eternal Internet Debate Graveyard, digging up the corpse of the horse ridiculously named 'How Does Nintendo Retroactively Stop Apple From Eating Into Its Market Share?' and flogging its rotting flesh for ten minutes without going after the mastermind who's naming these horses."

I know when I was... I guess that would've been late elementary school age?  The absolute last thing I would've wanted was a trojan gaming system from an entertainment-only brand I'd come to trust trying to make me learn even more during my off-time.

But I'm calling it even because of all the great hot dog cooking methods discussed over the course of the episode.

Love that CheapyD brings up Hearthstone so much. I'm a big fan, Cheapy, trying streaming play more often or playing with members!

Listening to Cheapy talk about how good an education-focused 3DS would be best for them makes me wonder what they would be like now if their parents had a Leapfrog-style option back when they were kids instead of just buying an NES or Master System or whatever.

If Nintendo made their next handheld an educational-focused system, they'd risk losing their dedicated fanbase that would be alienated by it, so maybe it would be better for parents, but I'm not sure if that audience is big enough to risk losing ~40 million in the process. I don't think you could have it both ways.

If you guys are looking for a charging cradle for ps4. The power A charging station is good. It'd officially licensed by Sony and it's only 20 dollars on amazon

Also to your orb question in destiny. It's usually to notify your party member so they get a charge on bar.

ALos got a question. Since cheapy added fans that messaged him, will wombat and shipwreck do the same? Would love to play online with you guys on Xbox one. Keep up the good work with the podcast

Not sure about the next handheld being educational focused. I'm sure most of the user base aren't children so they'd be alienating a lot of people.

Nintendo will probably never reach DS levels of success.

CURRENTLY, I believe Nintendo makes more profit off the 3DS than if they sold games on iOS / made an iPhone competitor. Maybe in the future it'll be in Nintendo's best interest to make iOS games, but not now.

I think CheapyD ragged on Nintendo for not doing what they should have done without giving any real solutions. Obviously it would have been better to not do 3D and had a much cheaper handheld at launch, but Cheapy acted like Nintendo should be doing something fundamentally different to compete with Apple. I disagree.

Um ok.

Cheapy,

With the rumor about a new Rock Band game, how excited are you (on a scale of 1-10) about spending $80-120 (or more, depending on how many songs you'll potentially buy as dlc) on a new game and plastic periperhals?

Also, I'm intrigued by the possibility of space dog-fights in Destiny.  You can buy upgrades for your ship, so I don't see what would be the point if there were not going to be space battles when the game gets released.

That 3DS (or whatever the next handheld would be) educational focus would be horrendous. Yeah, Nintendo is always talked about as being for kids, but a large part of the market are the 20-somethings (and older, of course) that grew up with the games and now can buy it themselves. Having a system that focuses on education would completely alienate them. Yeah, you could have a way to disable it, but the kids would surely figure that out, and therefore defeat the purpose.

Cheapy thinking that the Hearthstone expansion was going to be something other than just the card game was kind of foolish. For me, being able to battle the Naxxramas bosses would be kind of cool since I was a hardcore WoW raider for awhile so I know the bosses from there. But Hearthstone doesn't appeal to me since I'm not a fan of card games (and I suck at it; that doesn't help).

You are able to create folders on the PS3. I don't own a PS4 so I don't know if it's still there, but it was pretty limited on the PS3 anyways IIRC so maybe it's not what Wombat is looking for.

It drives me mad how you've all been brainwashed into thinking that awful half fat half meat strips is real bacon.  The worst part is when you talk about the rest of the world like were doing it wrong, how ignorant can you get?  This is one of the reasons people from Europe and around the world think Americans are ignorant.

Real bacon is thin and a properly slice of the animal. Not something that's been three factories before it gets onto a plate.

Sorry for the rant, love the CAG cast :) xx

This is bacon

Id love a new Rockband myself, i wouldnt even mind buying new instruments, problem is the 200 or more dollars i spent on dlc last gen. That will be a problem as in im not going to buy songs twice when i already paid 2 bucks a song that sell for 99 cents on itunes and amazon. Thats going to be a major hurdle but it could be a game to make me buy a next gen system because ill play it for hundreds and hundreds of hours

I love the CAGCast, but hearing Cheapy talk about Nintendo gives me ulcers. Can't argue with the numbers, but turning the 3DS into an educational LeapFrog type machine would be a huge blow to the industry. FriskyTanuki nailed it in my opinion:

If Nintendo made their next handheld an educational-focused system, they'd risk losing their dedicated fanbase that would be alienated by it, so maybe it would be better for parents, but I'm not sure if that audience is big enough to risk losing ~40 million in the process.
This!

Both Halo: Reach and Halo 4 had space dogfighting scenes in them.  So the race is on between Mass Effect and Destiny to see which RPG will put in the aerial combat mechanic.

Another reason to buy digital (for a small percentage of the population):  my PS3 stopped reading discs.  Rather than get a new one (or try to get it fixed), I just bought the last several games digitally.

Yeah i refuse to ever buy digital. I like to have something to show for my money. I feel empty inside when its digital

That sounds like a mental problem.

I'm happy to buy digital when the prices are the same.  So I bought TLoU remastered digitally this month, but I bought AC4 on disc last month because it was $17 cheaper on Amazon.  And all my Vita games are digital apart from AC3 Liberation which came free with the system.  Being able to swap between games with changing discs or carts is a huge bonus.
