CAGcast #79: CheapyD and Wombat Show
Cheapy, I'm going to second Roufuss' request to drop VGC as an affliiate. The guy in the thread in the deals section is bad-mouthing your other, reputible affiliates (Play-Asia, etc.), and the inclusion of their potential-for-piracy tools in their store violates the ToS we have to abide bt in the trading forums.

I love CAG and try to support it via affiliate links even if I'm not buying game-related things (say on Amazon), but I don't feel I can continue to support the site through said links as long as that joke of site is part of our "network."
Thirded. I was actually okay with things (other than the hypocrisy of the mod stuff), because he seemed to be actively interacting with CAGs and taking their comments in the best way possible, and I didn't really have any interest in buying from a random independent retailer anyway. But now not only is he attacking other affiliates, he's doing so by just plain making stuff up. Lik-Sang folded and was reborn as Play-Asia? Really?

After listening to the live shows and the return to normal shows between them, I'm now convinced the show is best recorded.

First of all, I listen to your show to hear you guys. I don't download the "Cheapy Fans Show." And the quality and awkwardness of the callers does not help. And I'm listening to the heavily edited version... I can just imagine the pain of being there live. Having produced live radio shows, I know you need to be more selective and quicker to dump callers.

Second of all, are you no longer going to include the rest of your listeners in you contests? Just the hundred that can be around at that time have a shot now? Hmm.

If you want to continue having listeners on the show, perhaps you could have them send you questions & comments via audio files which you can play during the show? Or just keep the chatroom live during the show, and you can read questions and helpful corrections off your screen.

Also, perhaps it is time to tweak your show format. You seem to be competing with the Shipwrecks' new show rather than working with them. You have a segment that goes over the same new releases coming out which you also haven't played. Perhaps you can just tell listeners to download CAG's "sister" podcast for that and just talk about games you have played. This will probably also help keep archived shows for having so much dated material.

I don't think the CAGcast necessarily needs to discuss deals that will be expired in a week. Your strength is the dynamic between the hosts. The semi-antagonistic relationship between Cheapy and Wombat is what gets me to go back and download older podcasts, even if I have to zone out during talk of what Circuit City had on sale last November. You two are a great foil for each other.

And if Cheapy & Wombat are an old bickering couple, The Shipwrecks are the playfully nagging newlyweds. The CAG Foreplay podcast has greatly improved since its recent inception and is a great addition to your website. Mrs. Shipwreck has especially improved; she's has gotten less shy and has become the prominent host... not bad for only three shows in. Will the CAG Foreplay podcast be getting a section of its own in the forums?

Wow, this is really long.

Anyhoo, I also enjoyed the cucumber pepsi video. But I do hope you're past the unboxing video stage by the time you hit Depends age. And I never had a problem with your head glare, but I have wondered... are your eyes black or is even more light needed in your room?

That's enough for me. Have a day!

After well over 100 episodes of the CAGcast, I find myself to still be both surprised and delighted at how crescent fresh this continues to be. Cheapy, bless you. Wombat, bless you *and* thank you. You two make the internet zing with a crisp, flavorfulness that is nearly unparalleled. If these were ancient times, hot babes in togas would fan you and feed you grapes, and as well they should.

Don't ever stop, even if the feds are beating down the door to arrest you for your many crimes against state-sponsored boredom.

Great show again guys. Wombat did you go to those stores I mentioned and also did you see F4 Rise of the Silver Surfer? What were your impressions? Cheapy, thanks for mentioning the CAGHL league. Too bad we reseeded or I would of had my chance at revenge against you in the semifinals (you beat me in our only game during the season.)

Also, don't forget if you want to try Marvel Trading Card Game again I can help you, maybe over XBox Live chat/Vision chat. Also here was the old demo site again if you needed it:

What the fuck is this crap about selling R4DS' being illegal? You can also write your own code and run it on the DS without paying ridiculous fees to nintendo. At GDC I think they even had some people who had done that in some indie area. With the swap discs and other mod chips you can also play games from outside your region. This is clearly not a cut and dry evil issue, please do not give in to strongly-worded internet statements that say otherwise. If you get a C&D, fold. But not for angry forum trolls. I'm not saying warez games, or download omg romz, but it is perfectly legitimate to play games from outside your region and other homebrew. Mod chips aren't the devil.

Yet this joker of an affiliate sells that kinda stuff. It's a pretty harsh and obvious contradiction to the ToS on CAG.

Well it is cheapy's site, if he wants to play import games from the US on his .jp wii, and has no problem with that then there is a simple solution, he can change the ToS.

Either the ToS for the site need to change or this affiliate has to go. Based on the owner's conduct on these boards, I'd vote for the latter.

I admit I haven't seen this guy's actions. In any case, I hope Cheapy's morals don't bend with whatever way the wind blows, regardless of it offending me or any of the other users. I'm sure anyone could rip into me because I mostly lurk and listen, but I'm just disappointed that it ruins the show, and the site when people keep giving the hosts shit every week.

Not to beat the same drum, but the R4DS is almost identical to a product they sell at Wal-Mart, Target and who knows where else.

Really hard to call it illegal.

EDIT: Cheapy, thanks for closing that deals thread. I look forward to an update on this insanity on the next CAGCast. :)

i don't know if that middle symbol is supposed to be accented in naruto and it's definitely not accented in tanuki. bring a list of game-related words to your teacher, cheapy, and see how long before the teacher rolls his/her eyes at the limited realm of japanese you're interested in.

i tried to check out that goozex site, but i typed in goosex because when you guys say it, it sounds like an s. i was thinking goose x. i'm not sure how i didn't realize it was goo sex.

those 5 dollar games are 5 bucks because they have so little added. double dragon had a filter and online co-op. tmnt had online co-op. this can't be that hard to do considering i found kaillera to be so incredibly reliable when i used it in 2004. PoP has a complete graphical and control system overhaul.

irredeemable ant-man? irredeemable indeed.

alright, so i checked out the foreplay podcast. there's a problem. while people used to make the joke about someone having a face for radio, i feel that wombat and the shipwrecks have voices for photos, so i sure hope they're pretty. congratulations, cheapy! your voice is like butter and it's the only reason i can listen to the podcast. while the info is always interesting, i couldn't listen to wombat alone and i'll have to skip out on the shipwrecks. sorry, guys.
You didn't need the fire extinguisher in Code Veronica, silly Cheapy. If you wanted to snag the Magnum, you needed it to put out the fire, but otherwise you could continue on with the game just fine. I know this for a fact, because I screwed myself on having it later in the game as well (I left it in the security check box), and had no problem beating the game.
Quoting for emphasis. Cheapy, the extinguisher was optional! I hope you still have your DreamCast and save file! If not, oh well, the end of the game isn't all that.

I've been listening to the cagcast for couple of months and finally had to reply on the whole emulations question. I remembered reading a while back on slashdot about a rulling by the copyright office about emulating game. I found the link to if anyone would like to read it.

Short Answer

It's very simple to read and I've come to these conclusions.

Emulation is legal of games where the equipment that runs it is no longer available. This includes SNES,Genesis....and so on. But since Sony is still making the Playstation 1 you can't emulate those games. I know that there DS devices that lets you load ds games and thats not allowed either.

Even though nintendo has the rights to their characters, (Mario, Donkey Kong....) You can legally play the ROMs as long as you don't profit off thier copyright of there character. So, you can sell hardware that emulates but you can't sell the ROMs. This is what peeves me about the Wii Virtual console, when you "buy" those games they're not selling you the game/ROM they are selling you emulator. This doesn't seem to be the case with most Xbox live arcade titles, as they buy the rights to games, port it /reprogram it over (XBLA) and make changes. (Street fighter/ninja turtles multiplayer)

So for all you Old School gamers out there, download an emulator and get to gaming and don't buy the Wii titles unless Nintendo is willing to give you something more then what you can get for FREE!!!

Great great great podcast. Nothing but great interactions between the two featured players. Wonderful.

Question for both: Do you ever feel like you're too into gaming? Do you ever feel like you should take a break and walk away from the hobby for a while?

Periodically, I feel like I should cease gaming for a while and invest my time elsewhere. It's different for you guys, obviously because of the show, but what about pre-cagcast?

MADDGIEF (pronounced like Madd chief, only with a G and no h!)

Hey guys, just wanted to comment on the live shows. I think they are great, and when a live show is done properly I think it will be even better than the CAGcast is now.

It would be nice if you had a call screener, like you would have if it was live on-the-air radio. That might help make sure the calls you take were at least on topic with the current discussion.

Also, a request. Could you remind us during the live show what day you are actually recording it? I would love to sit in on the chat during the live show - it really makes it more interactive and fun for the listener. I just haven't been able to catch it because I don't dwell in the forums or anything, and you never mention it during the show.

Thanks, keep up the good work.

P.S. More comics talk from Wombat please.

He mentions it on the CAGcast, and he did for this show. It'll be live on Wednesday at 8 PM EST.

Not sure if this has been answered yet, but Resident Evil Outbreak is still online. Resident Evil Outbreak File #2, the sequel, is no longer online.

Well, I finally got around to listening to CAGCast 79 today, it's been such a nutso time at work.

I wanted to chime in on the live show thing. I enjoy the live shows tremendously, and I am glad it sounds like you'll be doing more of them. In general, I agree that the live callers seem to be wonking it out a little bit, mostly I think because of the technical glitches they bring, they throw the cadence off.

I think if Cheapy and Wombat paid a little more attention to the chat room as they're recording (I can't say how much they're paying attention, though I know they've commented on things that people have said as it goes on..), they could keep the spontinaeity going without the interruption of the technical mess. The people in the chat room will probably let them know if they miss something, or if there's a tangent to that point, and they can comment on it then, too...

I'm sure that doesn't make sense, but all in all, I love the live shows, and the live callers don't seem to add much, so....yeah. OK, work has totally fried my brain, I'm sure I'm incoherent.

Oh, well I guess I didn't notice it. I usually listen to it while I work, so sometimes I miss a bit if I'm concentrating or someone comes by or something.

thanks
