CAGcast #82: E3 & Earthquake Wrap-up Special

my 360 broke on monday and i returned it to bestbuy, It was my third one. Decided to take giftcard and wait on the halo 360. If you buy a japanese core 360 will it still play your games? The pics you posted are amazing. Lol got pics with the gay gamers? I agree with wombat i thought blue dragon sucked. I actually have been look forward to strangle hold and glad to hear your impressions.

"It was great, I mean everyone was super nice. I mean chris and everyone so nice and they showed me a lot of love, the gay gaymer guy in that way too."

It sure seems a lot of 360 systems broke recently. Mine died last week while trying to download the E3 stuff so I made sure to stop by their E3 booth and talk with their PR people.

Great show, lasted the car ride from and to work; which is always awesome. Do the people who signed up for goosex for the ds lite contest qualify for this new contest? Or should we sign up again with another e-mail? Oh and that makes 2 of us cheapy that had our 360s red ring over the e3 weekend.

Nelson, from Achievement Junkie mentioned that he met you at E3. He said they enjoy the podcast, and you were pretty cool in person.
Wombat didn't watch the ShaqFuing Press Conferences?

...Whats the point of him?

I watched the damn press confrences, FULLY.

Dissapointed... Should have had someone else on for this CAGCast.
Allow me to explain to you the concept of "the straight man." Imagine Wombat HAD watched all the press conferences, read every single hands on report, and called Major Nelson each night just to say "Hi." At that point, the conversation would go something like this:

CheapyD: So next I saw Mass Effect. Did you see anything about this?

Wombat: Yep. Tons. Looks great! What else did you see?

CheapyD: Well, I saw Bioshock and...

Wombat: Yeah, the art deco levels are cool. Looked great in the videos and it sounds like everyone liked the way it played. Next?

CheapyD: Ummm...Little Big...

Wombat: Seen it.

In situations like this, it is Wombat's job to be our representative in the discussion. Cheapy went to E3. Wombat didn't. And like many of us, he has a life and cannot follow every single snippet of information coming out of the show. Moreover, he's not supposed to know everything because then Cheapy would have no reason to tell him about it, would he?

That said, I did find it a little frustrating that Wombat declared Nintendo's "big news" to be the release date for Metroid Prime 3, when in actuality it has been known since at least GDC. And both guys glossed over the announcement of release dates for Brawl and Galaxy, which WERE new, and didn't even mention the announcement of Mario Kart for Wii.

In general, Nintendo kind of got the shaft in this show, while Microsoft got most of the love (curious given the advent of Cheapy's 360 joining the ranks of the departed). I can only hear about so many 360 shooters before my eyes start to glaze over, no matter how good they all look.

But for the most part, great show. I know what Cheapy means about E3 being better when it's smaller and about the people in the industry, rather than a lot of flash and jiggle. During the three years I covered it, it was just too damn much, and a lot got lost in the shuffle. My favorite part was hanging out with other game journalists, but they were damn hard to find. You might see them once, then never again unless you made specific plans, which was more or less impossible in that environment. So whether E3 keeps this new format or disappears altogether, I think it's about time.

Good, point. But you act like they planned that. . .

And I doubt Wombat would be like, "Little Big Planet? Ok next!" Its a discussion you discuss what you thought about it and you get two different views on the game.

Saying that its impossible to discuss a game without having one person not seeing it doesn't make sense. My favorite E3 discussions where the Ziff Davis (1up) Crew. They all had great conversations, and also revealed alot of information I didn't even know.

And it doesn't help when every time CheapyD explains the game Wombat kind of brushs it off, "Oh, that sounds... lame..."

But I did enjoy the CAGCast, it got better near the end. And I agree with Cheapy when he says there is alot of great games coming! Its going to be disgusting. Wombat says hes going to need to work more to afford the games, im going to need to work less to play them! Ahh!

Perhaps, but I've heard way too many gaming podcasts lately (IGN, Epileptic Gamer, others) where everyone works together, everyone sees and plays the same stuff, and the discussions essentially devolve into inside jokes and frat boy behavior instead of intelligent commentary about the stuff they've all seen but we haven't. I would hate to see the CAGcast turn into that.

And while they may not have officially "planned" for Wombat not to watch any of the E3 stuff, it's generally understood after 80+ episodes that, unless it's Oblivion, Wombat is generally going to be less informed and Cheapy is going to be the one telling us about things. THEN they discuss. The formula obviously works. I don't understand why people continue to act surprised.

glad you're safe Cheapy. i didn't know you lived that close to the quake.

btw, nice job with E3, you added a pretty cool "everyday guy" POV of the event.

Womabt wins this week with that line: "Jewish stars [aligning]" haha

R.I.P. CheapyD's Xbox 360

Damn, so many 360 deaths. Sounds like a horror movie in which the 360's are each being killed one by one. I fear that my 360 will be next. Ugh, this blows...

Nice Japanese two-fingered pose! You're clearly being integrated at a fantastic rate. Perhaps in 20 years you will have the language down pat :)

Entertaining as always.

Damn - what a great Goozex promotion !! Too bad I signed up during the DS lite contest. For those that haven't signed up yet, give it a shot. I have been very happy with the service so far.

My 360 has returned (temporarily?) from the dead. I performed two towel trick resurrections and so far I am 2 for 2 in successful bootups.

No offense to you but this is about the 12th E3 podcast where the host spent a good amount of time on how much they drank at E3.

Otherwise I appreciate your takes and LMAO at "the falcon should come preinstalled with tic-tac-toe"
This is what i'm talking about when i say Mass Effect brings dialog cinematics to the next level:
http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/13287
Looks like this fall I'm going to be the Cpt. Kirk of Mass Effect and try to nail me some blue alien bitches. Have you checked out the Too Human trailer out on live? That cinematic looks like shit next to Mass Effect.

Nice show guys. From the sounds of it, E3 was a lot of fun. I was a bit surprised that Cheapy's game of the show was Little Big Planet, considering the release date is TBD. From the sounds of it, I thought it would have been Mass Effect or BioShock.

As far as the big XBL annoucement later this year, I'm guessing it's going to be the Zune Marketplace being added to XBL with it's own blade, so people can download songs directly to their 360 or Zune, and manage their Zune via XBL.

I enjoyed you show.

The only thing that got me was the R&C complains about "More of the same but only in HD" what else could they have done? What would you have done to change up things and NOT RUIN the game for the R&C fan base?

It's easy to stand on the sidelines and make comments, but take it a step beyond that and explain some of the creative changes you would make and watch how people knock you down.

Good show overall.

Sorry to hear about your 360, Cheapy. At least you were able to breathe some new life into your console.

Hmmm, if you do get a japanese Core and slap your HDD onto it, wouldn't you be able to play Japanese-only titles as well as region free? (I don't know anything about 360 imports, but I assume there must be a few Japanese-only titles. Or, you can do pre-views of games launched in Japan first, like Blue Dragon that way...)

I have been very lucky with my pre-launch 360; it suffered being spiked down onto the floor, case and hard drive flying off, and still works fine. (I half-wonder if that didn't somehow help it, as everyone I know has had their launch 360 red-ring on them. Maybe it shook the gremlins out...?)

I just signed up for Goozex. Even though I'm more of a collector, I'm going to check it out.

CheapyD, thank you for your coverage of E3 and all the sacrifices you made both personal and professional in order to bring us the news. What I found a little concerning to me was amount of work involved and the visible toll that the E3 schedule was taking on you as the lone representative of CAG's all over the world. This got me thinking -

Where's Cheapy's Wingman?!

While many CAG's would argue that Wombat would be the most logical choice to be Cheapy's right-hand man at E3 Wombat's work schedule and the simple fact that he doesn't earn his living as the CAGcast co-host (yet) means unfortunately that Wombat can only do so much and as a result had to sit out E3 this year.

It looks like you could've used a hand out there at E3 and without putting undue pressure on Wombat perhaps next time you can enlist some help on your next Video Game event.
Why is everyone always bagging on Wombat? He's the color commentator, not the news crew. Jeez. He brings the funny. Straight up news reporting is dull, throw in a Vagina Clown comment from time to time and it makes it more listenable.
He is not even funny. He ads nothing in my opinion.

I found the parts where MP:3 not being great suprising and LittleBigPlanet dosen't appeal to me as much as it does to you so that just goes to show how opinions differ.

Wow, I can't believe the amount of backpedaling and ass-kissery that Wombat has sunk to in the recent episodes. I am referring to the "Vagina Clown" episode where you so correctly pointed out that Major Nelson is nothing more than a glorified mouth-piece for Microsoft. Now it seems that you are eager to retract your position by reducing it to a "phony internet grudge."

Not only that, but you are now sniffing around to be a guest on his show. You have let me down. You should have stuck to your guns. I expect this from CheapyD who seems to harbor a man-crush on Major Nelson (You got him a gift, Cheapyd? Are you serious?)

Oh well, you guys are still the best video game podcast out there. Keep up the good work, and keep off the ass-kissery.

I don't buy that, you greatly underestimate Cheapy's need to talk. It wouldn't just end with Wombat going "Yeah, I saw that." Instead you'd get more in-depth discussions about the topic at hand.

This time though, it was a unique situation where Wombat had to attend some family gathering since it was his wife's birthday and all. A good reason for not keeping up with the insane amount of information that E3 provides, otherwise though there is little to no excuse for not at least watch one of the conferences in their entirety. Especially when you're a host of a gaming podcast.

Well, after the portion you quoted I pointed out that I still felt that Wombat (and even Cheapy) could have done a little more due dilligence, especially when it came to Nintendo.

I don't think they could get Mass Effect onto 1 disc if you ask me.

Cheapy, I think when it comes to Metroid you are just too much used to dual analog controls. I've heard other people talk about it saying that if you're really into D.A. FPS's you're going to have trouble adapting to the shooting controls at first.

Cheapy I sent this to you in a PM but I will post it here in case you want to discuss it in the next CAGcast for others to hear. Thanks.
Cheapy today I noticed that cheapyd.com website has been blocked from my government computer. It says it is blocked because it is under the following category "Games". Previously this website has worked for a couple of years after the cheapassgamer.com website was blocked in 2005. Have you made any domain changes or anything to the cheapyd.com website or have they just increased their sensitivity for blocking game websites? If so is there anything you can do because I am sure I not the only one with this problem now. Thanks Cheapy and I love the CAGcast.
