CAGers Beware! Fine Print at Overstock.com

Blinkus

CAGiversary!
I can be blamed for my naivete and unfamiliarity with Overstock.com's promotional system, but hopefully no one else will have to be.

I've recently been looking to purchase a DS Lite and it seemed like the best possible offers were coming from Overstock with their 10% for new customers deal. Then I saw this coupon, which I proceeded to use:

Or so I thought.

When I was looking into the Overstock deals, I never saw any discount applied at the "Billing & Shipping" page (where they say it'll be applied, which left me unsettled). It didn't matter if it was 10% off, 8% off, $15 off $150, or the one above, they never showed up. I thought perhaps their site is set up like shit, and that perhaps there was was a page after it that allowed you to review your information before you submitted it and that it might show the discount.

There is not.

Now before I go on, I'll add that I'm not a complete jackass, I did indeed try to look for listed exceptions, etc. The Terms and Conditions linked from their front page made no mention, and there was absolutely nothing else on the same page as the previous graphic that even referred to that coupon. (The x% off deals did have asterisks and little mentions at the bottom of the page)

Immediately after my order went through and I knew that the discount did not apply, I contacted them through their live chat service. It took the representative a while, but he eventually cited a clause that's available in their Help section.
5. Coupons do not apply to items within the “Books, Music, Movies & Games” category, or “Travel” and “Auctions” stores, unless specifically stated. Discounts do not apply to orders made up entirely of items found in the "Books, Music, Movies, & Games” category, items in the “Auctions” or “Travel” stores. If your order contains a mix of media and non-media products, then the coupon will apply.
So, now I think I know why none of the promotions I tested showed up in checkout. I've also looked at using one of the percent off coupons on just a video game, and the discount still doesn't show up at the shipping & billing page.

So as far as I can tell, Overstock is pretty much screwing us gamers over.

Has anyone else successfully used one of Overstock's promotions? Did perhaps it only work because you bought your copy of Elite Beat Agents with some nice bedding? Comments, explanations, etc very much welcome.

P.S. I'm not sure what the hell I'm going to do with my overpriced DS now. (They're cheaper at Amazon with the free shipping) The rep offered me $20 off in credit off my next purchase because I'm "valued" as a customer, but I'll be damned if I'd use it. If I can, I'm gonna try and cancel the order if I can't bitch at them to get me anything off my purchase because their return policy is absolutely horrid:
All returns will be subject to a 15% restocking fee and the original shipping price will be deducted from the refund amount.

I'm pretty sure it tells you right after and right before you apply the coupon to your cart that it's not valid for books, music, or games.

You're half right. It tells at the bottom in fine print, but only for the percent off deals. The $20 off $100 discount that I found linked from here offers no such details.

Okay. That was gonna be my other question, if people were doing that. I tried to find something under 10 bucks real quick but I couldn't find anything. I'll keep the camera bag in mind however, lol.

Because if there wasn't something viably cheap to pad with, I was gonna wonder why we even linked their offers at all.

Anyways, thanks!

P.P.S
Overstock: Once an order is processed we don't have an option to cancel an order as our order are electronically sent for shipment.
you: Can't your warehouse be 'electronically' contacted and told not to ship it?
Overstock:We have no way of contacting our warehouse.
I was an inch away from telling them to "send Paul Revere, Ghost Rider, anyone!" They offered me store credit again, and I asked that if they're willing to let me save $20 on my next order, why not let me save it on this order.

They eventually issued $20 back to my card. Yay.

So apparently, if you're beligerent enough, they'll psuedo-honor the coupon due to their lack of proper notice on the page!

Yeah sometimes they get you, but if it doesn't apply before you give the final go on the order, it didn't work.

I used a 20% coupon to get my 360..and a children's bike giraffe water bottle. Was the cheapest thing I could find.
