CAGLS: Madden 13 Gentlemen's League - We Finished! Thanks for Playing!
Thats a good idea not to start until a patch comes out. A lot of bugs and glitches have been discovered over on Operation Sports, it's a little disheartening tbh.

Also this may be a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyways, I can go ahead and start a "franchise" if I want to without it interfering with this league right? I mean on this year's game you can be in a league like this one and then still have your own CC going? I just want to make sure before I think about starting my personal CC.
Yeah, my general opinion on EA games is that they are great at flash and glitz...things like graphics, smooth transitions, and even the core gameplay in most of their games is pretty solid. But their attention to detail has always been and continues to be complete shit. They routinely program basic fundamentals of the sport completely wrong and they often allow these huge glitches that cause the game to perform in unrealistic ways. You have to wonder sometimes if they're really that clueless, or if they just figure that their target audience is too dumb to notice.

This generation of EA Sports titles has been highly mediocre imo. NCAA, Madden, and their basketball games (when they were still around) are all very average it seems. I think NHL has been their second best series this console cycle right behind FIFA, which has been great for years now. If only Madden could routinely be as amazing as MLB: The Show, which is one of the greatest sports franchises ever imo.
Thanks for the Ball Hawk tip, do I have to be controlling the defender or can I just hold Y after the pass?
For ball hawk to take effect, I believe you have to switch to the player.

I don't want to sidetrack relevant discussion in here, and I really didn't intend to go off on an EA rant, but it comes so naturally now, sometimes I don't even notice it, lol. Putting in spoilers so people can easily ignore if they'd like.
I love NHL, but it's also severely overhyped and overrated. It took them how long to finally realize that not all players should skate at the same speed...especially those going backward. They've even gone out of their way this year to point out how dumb and unrealistic that is. "Oh...yeah...last year's game was stupid...ha...except when you were trying to get us to buy it by telling us how amazing it was...ha...wait..." Or that you shouldn't be able to zig zag around on the ice, spinning and twirling like a ballerina while the puck just stays glued to your stick.

The AI was also atrocious (worse than Madden's IMO). I've seen players turn and skate away from the puck, stand flat footed for 8-10 seconds as the play goes by them, throw the puck into their own net, abandon their position to go hit a player at the blue line, stand in front of a player doing nothing and then checking him AFTER he takes a shot, etc. Even the puck physics have been terrible. 100mph slapshots would just be absorbed into the goalie's pads, but yet a weak backhand wrister from the blue line would generate the biggest rebound ever. But reviewers and casual fans don't see these things because they wet their pants over goalie fights, glass breaking, hats being thrown on the ice, and other meaningless things that have no actual bearing on how good the game is. This is basically the EA way. At this point I expect it...and now, apparently, I also buy their Season Ticket so I can experience these travesties against gamers 3 days early. I guess that's truly what buying out the competition will get you.
He's also usually in the NCAA league, but I haven't seen him around.
I've been around, just debating whether I'd play or not. When the other league couldn't guarantee me the Browns I decided I didn't want to go through the team picks and if someone got them first (though I'm not sure who would bother) have to back out. If nobody takes the Browns in the next few days I may be interested. I played my first game with them today, but I need some time to decide if I want to go through the misery of using them again this year. :)

Really though my dissertation work is the biggest issue, but I think I might be able to swing one league.

That's totally up to you, man. I completely understand where you're coming from. And I really have no idea what to expect with this league this year. Half the league is filled with new members, so I don't know how good they are, or how many seasons anybody intends to play. I'm hoping for the best though, and I'm really encouraged that we'll be starting out with an almost full league. Hopefully that will motivate people to stay active and to really appreciate the idea of building their team for the future.

Not everybody will find immediate success, but with the expanded trading options this year, real team finances to manage, and a less restrictive draft class (in terms of no potentials and being able to groom anyone into a good player), I really feel like we'll see some great things once we get beyond the first season. I'm definitely excited to get started!

Anyone else give the connected careers website a looksy? I tried it out today. I definitely feel like it's a lot easier to do the cuts and upgrading in the actual game. Too much waiting for screens and crap to do it through the website. I definitely will be using the texting update feature to get text and advancement notices sent to my phone though.
Hey Guys, Blade and I are trying the Online Connected Careers, Anyone else want to join our little world and create a player?
Yes by connected careers he means we are doing players only, no coaches.

Just picked this up! Played a quick game on All Pro and killed the AI(was able to do the same on the demo) I haven't played Madden in a few years so I was surprised to see it was that easy. However, when I play on All Madden, the game is too hard. Not so much hard, its just unfair. Alot of dropped passes, AI breaking multiple tackles and other BS. All of my All Madden games were from the demo though so maybe they've changed some things up. I'm still getting used to the game and trying to find my groove so my opinion will probably change as I play more.

now that the league is basically full, i'd vote we just play on all pro considering the percentage of games against the cpu is very small.

I'm just going to leave this here:

if anyone ever wants to scrimmage you can send me a pm or message on xbl my gamertag is the same as my cag name, 3 for the e in aft3r and zero for the o is sh0ck
Just to be clear, the DB's hands morphed through Cruz's helmet to intercept the ball. Gotta love Madden.
I can live with that type of stuff, but last year they were reaching through stomachs of other players to get interceptions. Clipping here or there like that is a lot better than it use to be.

I'll take the Browns if they're still available. I've been playing Madden since Madden 2004. Buying the game tomorrow. Gamertag is Specbob7.

And you don't have to worry. I won't quit if I have a losing season or two. I'd like to be in this for the long haul.

Sounds good, man. I'll need your time zone and general availability to add to the OP to make it easier for people to get in touch with you. But other than that, welcome aboard!

Time zone is Pacific until November at which time I'll be going back home to Eastern.

Availability changes from week to week as my work schedule does. But I'm away from home(responsibilities) for the next two months so I'll be around a lot.
Also, what is the projected start date? And how do I go about signing up on the Xbox?
The start date will be hopefully be somewhere around 9/11. We're waiting on the first patch which will hopefully correct some of the issues with the game. This basically concides with waiting on the regular season roster update as well. Once the league is created, I'll send out invites to everybody.

Just noticed the guy up there who said he would take the Browns if he found the time...

If he does decide to take the Browns, I'll take the Cardinals to fill out the league. I honestly do not care what team I have.

And everyone feel free to add me to their friends list. I'll be around tomorrow afternoon/night playing for the first time.

Well, that would be a tremendous help if both of you were willing to do that...as it would allow us to hold off on free agent signings until we got a better feel for what teams are most in need of them. And of course, having every team full would provide for a more enjoyable experience. Not sure if Ultimate Matt X ever decided one way or the other though.
I might be up to join later tonight.
Hey dude, sorry I haven't gotten back to you. You are more than welcome to join. I'm not sure if it will make you wait until we start season 3 or not but Id love to have ya Pitfall! Always enjoyed playing against you and it would be nice not having to get destroyed by you. LOL..

To all, if you haven't done this part of the game yet! Its fun if you get a good friend to play with who can coincide with your schedule. Blade and I ran through a season in about 2.5 days. That being said both players created were high draft pics (Of course!) and both of us did not start. Though I did get way more playing time being a tight end on the Texans. He was a HB for the Patriots stuck behind Woodhead. He did do KR and PR though. All in all a fun addition. I will say the only down side was the part he and I were most looking forward to. PLAYING HEAD TO HEAD in this mode. Texas v Patriots in week 14. We actually had to watch the entire game, NO SIMMING at ALL....the first game he played a few plays and I played a few. Then we got "desynced" which disconnected us. We tried again and in the second quarter of watching the AI play each other with only like 2 plays a piece in the game we got kicked again. I recommend keeping leagues on this aspect to a few players. Much easier to play against the AI but has potential to be funner playing against friends.

anyone know why the new rosters and ratings don't transfer to Connected Careers? Eli is 97 if u play an exhibition or online match but when u go to franchise mode he's a 92. wtf?

The ratings in connected career and for online matchmaking are just different. Both rosters are updated and the same. Just in general most players are further down than their matchmaking counterpart. My guess this has to do with connected careers players have to match schemes, playbooks, etc, but in online matchmaking it just goes on rating. He should have only been a 92 to begin with so you should be happy with that rating in either mode.

Just some notes from doing the ccm that could help some people. It doesn't really matter what we choose for progressing players, barely anyone will actually want to do it week to week. I have maybe 3 players that progress fast enough(Rodgers, Jennings, Nelson) to make it even worth it.

Another reason firing should be off, is that each time they get fired, they'd have to create a new coach. Which means they would lose their coaching level which lowers the cost of buying things with xp. so it would kind of be like kicking them when theyre down.

To me it looks like the rookie drafts will always be the same every time you start a new franchise. That's not a guarantee but i've got the same two in back to back ccms.EDIT: I was wrong about this, tried a third franchise and got a different draft.

Kurt Warner comes out of retirement.

The trading block system seems to become better the second year. They start adding players along with picks. Now the trades still don't make the most sense(greg jennings for a 3rd and some 77 ovr fb)

If you cant play your game against a user and given week. Just click on simulate and it will allow the other user to play or simulate the game. Pretty helpful if someone has to miss a week for any reason. But make sure you aren't going to want to play the game when you hit simulate because it will not let you take it off of simulate.

That's all i have for now.

Edit: The scouting is actually pretty fun. I've had two people i've been set on drafting switch positions on me after the superbowl. One was an 87 corner who switched to receiver and was now an 80. The other was a 72 qb, with 90 speed, 90 TP and 80 plus who switched to wr. Make sure you watch the tweets because those are the only indicator that something will happen. They also give hints at which projected low draft picks are actually going to be good.

Another thing for teams that like to build through the draft and pick up a lot of draft picks. It's pretty hard to scout enough players to know what you are doing on every pick. There will be a lot of picks where it's just a choose one out of a hat situation.

Players no longer want ridiculous contracts. Sam Shields used to want 10 million a year and he is a mid70 corner. I remember Olb's used to want ridiculous money, same with receivers. Now it's tamed way back. Elite players still want huge contracts but you won't be paying out the ass for your nickel corner. It can be a little unrealistic and in your favor at times too, which can be nice. For example, Bj. Raji signed for a little over 2 million a year.

Another thing that got me was their award system. If you go to season awards it'll only show Coach of the Year and Mvp. To see Offensive/defensive rookie of the year, you would have to go to Nfc/Afc. I personally don't like that they did that, but if you want to find the awards that's how you do it.

I think the connected careers is better than the old franchise by a lot. I can say I never played more than a season of the old franchises. If I did it was sim and do all the off season quickly just to see. Me and my brother are already finishing up our fourth season.
I don't see the difference between connected careers and the old franchise.
Offline its not that big of a difference. But for online leagues its a huge difference, did you try online leagues last year?

I was in this league last year.
I'm disliking the Connected Careers a lil bit now. It's cool to play as legends in current day teams but I just want my regular franchise mode back.
I don't understand what using legends in current day teams has to do with Connected Careers. What part of old franchise mode is so limited now? The only difference I can think of off the top of my head is just not being able to control all 32 teams anymore. Unless you're saying you don't like the XP system...but that has less to do with the mode itself, and more to do with just changing the way players progress.
And you don't notice differences from last years to this years?
I keep seeing people complain about it without actually saying what they don't like. Sure, the game plays differently than last year...but again, that's not due to Connected Careers. For me, I like Connected Careers, but the other various glitches and bugs in the game I could do without.

I think my Madden Moments are glitched. I know I've beat them all, but it still says only 4/5.

Also, they really have to fix the CPU's 2 minute logic. In the Patriots/Giants SB scenario, New England had the ball with about 10 second left, down by 6. First play, a run up the middle. The clock runs out.

Yup the two minute logic causes the CPU to run on first down. To keep the clock moving.

I noticed that a couple guys have already posted saying they'll take the Cardinals, but the OP still shows them as open. If those other options fell through for some reason, I'm willing to take them on and be the league doormat. I'm in EST, and the times I'm available to play look like this: Mon-Thurs: 7:30 am-11:30 am, Fri-Sat: flexible (most any time, but some weekends are busier than others), Sun: 8:00 am- 12:30 pm. I work nights, so during the week I tend to do most of my gaming in the morning.

If that last spot in the league has already been locked up, I guess I'll just have to jump in earlier next year. :)

Sorry guys. Just getting to this now. I've had family visiting this weekend, so I haven't been near my computer very much. Anyway, hammurabi1337 did request the Cardinals first, so if he wants them, they're all his.

Danimal, I'd be happy to put you on the waiting list, which would give you first crack when a team opens up. With the nature of these leagues, it's fairly common for people to overestimate their interest level or underestimate their free time. A spot could open up for you sooner than you think. If you want to be on the waiting list, just let me know.

All right, got word from hammurabi that he is taking the Cardinals. So, Danimal, as I said, I'd be happy to add you to the waiting list.

Also, since the league is now full (freaking awesome guys! I can't believe it! We've come a long way :bouncy:), we can hold off on signing free agents until we get an idea of who really needs it. So, I adjusted the free agency policy in the OP accordingly.

Free Agency

In the first season, no team will be allowed to sign a free agent until we reach the designated period (most likely Week 4). At that time, we will use a draft style system according to team record (worst to best), allowing each team to sign one free agent. After the first season, the game should handle free agency in a bidding format where multiple teams can negotiate with players at the same time. So, hopefully at that point a draft system will no longer be needed.

Played a game with the Browns. Lost 14-7. Man this team is hard to play with. Lol but I did have a beautiful deep throw down the middle of the field to Josh Cribbs that went for a TD. Passing is very nice in this game.

I'm really looking forward to getting this league started. Gotta practice some more tonight with the Browns.

and can they seriously just take the back judge off the field or at least make him look different then the players. I don't know how many times i've had to check down cause i wasn't sure if it was a safety on my receiver or if he was open.

Haha, I was playing against a buddy during a couch h2h game and I busted a run downfield and juked out the ref thinking he was an opposing player, then got tackled by his safety. We both pretty much died laughing since I would've had a TD had I not attempted to break the referee's ankles.
