CAGS with office jobs, what keeps you going?

Well, it's summer, and I'm close to finished with my first two weeks as a full-time employee at my University (first fulltime job I've "officially" had, and the pay leaves a little to be desired since it's student work ). I have to say though the work isn't physically draining, it does a real number on you mentally. I want to know what keeps you office CAGS going during those grueling days such as the one I had today. For me, it's 44oz of Diet Mountain from the nearby Speedway after my lunch break. Nothing helps me along better than that.

The only thing that gets me through my daily office job? Debt, and knowing that I have to pay for things somehow. That and being far too lazy for anything physically demanding.

Well most days I work out of the office but I wouldn't say it's not grueling, just pretty boring. Which I often use CAG and the internet to keep me from getting too bored.
What's so grueling about your day? Please explain it to us that don't know your daily routine.
Since I'm only a Student Worker, I wasn't taught (and am not supposed to be taught) certain things about the University's labor, repair, keys, and accounts payable system (which is where I work). Well, the lady who was my supervisor, worked here for twenty years, and was in charge of all the things that I can't do quit. So, I'm stuck by myself covering three persons worth of work (they were supposed to hire more students, but if I can do the job, why bother I guess) on a system I currently only know 20% of. Not to mention that every one of the 31 phone calls I had today about repairs consisted of the person being rude because I can't page an electrician to change their lightbulb (or straighten a piece of piping on their gutter, or tighten their chair). IT's not usually this rough, but for the past week it has been a little crazy. I think when I learn the system better things will smooth out. It's ok though, I have my Mountain Dew.

*edit for using plural instead of possessive form. I'm r stoopid.

Welcome to the world of baptism under fire. It will get better as time goes on. And as you'll find, most people have little tolerance for anything when all is not right in the world.

That's ridiculous that one person quitting brings the whole thing semi-crashing to a halt. Should have it documented around somewhere.

I'm sure it will get better. After all, I'm only here for the summer and today only closes out my first two weeks so I've got more time to learn. I guess I'm just a little stressed because when things go wrong here, they go wrong with stunning magnitutde. Ah well, I'm closer to my goal of experiencing every type of under-appreciated work. I've already downed: Food service, Retail, Grounds Work, Factory Work, and Janitorial Work. After Office Work I think I'll go for Sanitation Work (Grabage man!).

RF, you should try mailman before sanitation, counts as government employment too.

If I didn't have internet at the office(even limited), I'd be long gone. Also since I'm the low guy, I get to mow the grass once a week, so I get to be outdoors and get some sun during the week.

Too late! God Bless America!

As for mailman, that's a good idea. I'll do that one, and maybe even Mall Seasonal Mascot!

In the office I work in we have music from a local Jazz station play all day and I get to check on the deals on this site everyonce in a while I am here.

Welcome to the office world. I have been through a lot of office jobs in the past years and you can say that I am pretty seasoned veteran. One thing I do after work is that I started working on an animated film. Its keeps me happy because I am doing something worthwhile (in my eyes) and life takes on new meaning.

Its also takes an enormous amount of discipline. You have to keep working at it all the time. Not everyone can do that.

So my advice to you is very simple: try to find something you like and work at it. If you live your life by only going to work (just to survive) then life is going to be hard to deal with. Thats why alot of people at my old insurance job are alchoholics -- They all secretly hate their job.

amen brother!

Also...
I like my 2 cups of java in the morning and an "afternoon cup of inspiration"; aka, another cup of coffee.

Taking pride in my job, and doing it well. If something's worth doing, it's worth doing well. Might not like every aspect of it, but appreciating it's a hell of a lot better than what a lot of people have, I'm good at it, and I provide a very important service to the company and our customers. My predecessor gave me about 1.5 hours of training before handing the job off to me, so I learned on the fly. And that's often the best way to learn.

Don't expect to 'love' your job--if you do, you're extremely lucky. Don't think it's going to be a blast every day, and don't get disappointed when you realize Joe Jerkwad in the cubicle next to you just got the promotion you were hoping for. Karma comes back around, things happen for a reason.
But don't work at a job you hate. Not "don't feel like working today", but *hate*. I've only done that once, and it was miserable. Eventually I quit with, mmm, about 12 hours notice. Locked the keys in the safe, said "We're outta here, hope you find someone to open up in the morning." But every other job, from the mundane [stocking shelves at a retail store] to the unusual [toting dead disemboweled deer from the reefer to the butcher], I've looked at a job that needed to be done [obviously, since I was getting paid for it], done my best at, and learned from it.

Money and the enjoyment of my job get me through the day. I'm a software developer, so I'm always faced with some sort of challenge. Of course, it always helps to have my laptop handy so I can work in a little CAG and solitare while I'm at it.;)

One thing though about working on a computer all day. You come home and seriously don't want to touch one (even though that's really inevitable).

I always preferred what my professors teach, "Not everything worth doing is worth doing well." It's a good thing to keep in mind when you've got ten things on your plate with only enough time or resources to take care of half of them.

Hey, if you consider school a job, and I do, what keeps me from failing is CAG and Ubersite. Ubersite is t3h good.

I always preferred my own belief that "Nothing is worth doing".
A Session of Unreal tournament usually gets me going. I play a few rounds at the end of the day and that usually gets me vented.
At my old job we used to play Quake 3 quite a lot in the late hours of the day. There was one guy who used to be one of the top players in Quake 1 on DM6, so one day he challenged everyone in the office to play him and get 1 frag before he could get 80. He beat us all into the ground without mercy. It was a sight to see.

I have been working full-time at a high school for the last full year now, and to be quite honest, the thing that keeps me going is the fact that come Friday at 4PM, I'm off to the Loop (chicago) to meet up with friends, have a few drinks and then have a good night out followed by a good weekend. It doesn't hurt that I'm dating the math teacher either. :) It's nice to see someone I care deeply about every single day as I jump between jobs. I also love the people I work with in general, so that's what keeps me going. I make a pretty decent chuck of change, but when it comes down to it, money really isn't everything.

And playing PSP in the stall after having to cut the bottom out of your boxers because you sharted in them again, right?
And playing PSP in the stall after having to cut the bottom out of your boxers because you sharted in them again, right?

Haha. I've never heard "sharted", but I regularly use "shat", as it's a wee less offensive to my 10 year old sister than flat-out "shit". Is "sharted" a pass-tense of "shat", then?
I send death threats to coworkers all day long through the instant messaging system.
"run- Net send", right? We used to do tat at school.. until some bastard spammed everyone in the school. Then they took away our "run" privelages. Hell, all you can do on our nazi-fied machines is Word, IE, and Simian. Funny they name the Simian email system that wasy.. It's as effective as a mail client as a monkey banging on a Unix server.

We used to have a match with about 8-10 co-workers that we dubbed 'HeadShot Fridays'. I remember this one time where they accused me of cheating ( I really wasn't. Used to LAN every other weekend), so to prove I wasn't I ONLY used the impact hammer. Needless to say, I was the custodian of the match wiping the floor with all who challanged! :D We didn't play the game much after that (or they didn't let me join ;) )

Aww man... I was just starting to forget about that... :D

Oh, someone asked - sharted is a combination between shit and fart. Basically it's when you try to fart but some shit squirts out instead because you pushed to hard.. there's an old thread somewhere detailing my sad work adventures one day....

Ah, but then you come into prioritization. It's still worth doing well, but you have to decide what's worth doing *first*. We had a Time Mastery course at work, and one of the things it discussed was the distance between 'urgent' and 'important'.

Something can be:
non-urgent, non-important
non-urgent, important
urgent, non-important
urgent, important.

Too many times we rush and rush to get the 'urgent' stuff that's 'not important' done on time. We should rather be focusing on the stuff that's 'important' and hopefully 'non urgent', before it shifts to 'important' and 'urgent' and has to get rushed. And really, if something is 'nonurgent' and 'nonimportant', it should definitely not be at the top of the list, if it's on there at all.
All too often when I get a request, it's important, and I understand that. But then it's urgent--not due to my schedule, but due to the *requestors*. So of course it is 'urgent' on mine as well, through no fault of my own. Those are the situations we need to try to be in control of. It's okay for it to be important, but it needs to come to me *before* it becomes 'urgent', because I might have other stuff that is urgent and important as well.

I'm in the same boat. I'm working on paying off my debt and simplifying my lifestyle, so I can get a job with an organization who's cause I actually buy into. I'm getting tired of working with all of these money-hungry corporate sellouts. I'd much rather work with a bunch of tree-huggers.

What gets me going is seeing my new baby girls picture and trying to stand everyday of work in order to make her future better. (I know sappy, but true ;))

Me too. It's depressing as hell though because I only get to spend 30 minutes or less with her in the morning from the time she wakes up to the time I leave for work. That's it. She is always asleep by the time I get home...
