California lawmakers want tax from online retailers

I read about this last week, it appears the Governator will shoot it down, but the pressure is bound to get to him. From what I recall they are betting that whomever the new Governor is will pass it. If that's the case, I will have no real incentive to shop at Amazon as much as I do.

paying for schools, roads, police, and firefighters is such a terrible thing. I hate taxes.

If you Californians want to do something to help your state, start lobbying to make them enforce immigration laws.
 
I have been living in southern nevada for almost a year (school) and man I cannot wait to transfer back to UCI in CA. It's hot/cold out here, no jobs, people are depressed, miserable and killing themselves! tons of foreclosures, scum of the earth making this place their home from people around the world, hoping to get rich. the state has no money because they don't tax anything. and the worse part is people rely heavily on tourism to support the economy. (everyone plays the blame game) and now they want to cut education. give me a break. my lease ends in june, and I could never be so happy to go back. i can live with the taxes, but I will never take California for granted again...

You might pay a lot more for taxes in California, but you know California takes care of its citizens, especially their children. and someones gotta pay for it. and that's the problem. people feel they are entitled to these programs but they don't want to pay in. but look at their state testing results. they are superb. same goes for NY, high taxing but one of the best states educational wise. don't think this is a bias opinion, because believe me there are a ton of things that need to change in california...

As if we citizens don't pay enough already. About 40% of our income goes straight to taxes already.

And who is supposed to pay for those things? If companies get taxed more, the costs get passed on anyway...
 
Not for nothing, but in most states (if not all) that have a sales tax, it is complimented by a use tax. By law, you're suppose to already be paying tax on items you buy online. But no one actually does it (something like less than 2% of taxpayers), and it would cost way too much for the states to actually enforce it, so some are trying to collect money that rightfully is theirs. Honestly, I don't blame them. Not only are they losing out on tax dollars, but the more people shop online, they less they actually ship within the state.
