Update 12/21: Patch now available

Call of Duty fans,

A quick note to check in and let you know that we’re in final test for the Call of Duty 3 multiplayer Title Update and that we hope to be released to the Xbox Live community in the coming days. We really want to thank everyone again for their continued support and feedback – you have been a tremendous help.

When it propagates, the update will download automatically upon logging into Xbox Live and running Call of Duty 3. This update addresses many of the Ranked and Player Match issues that we’ve discussed over the last few weeks. While we’ve made a number of enhancements, the most significant improvement is that Ranked Matches join lobbies much faster through both Custom and Quick Match. Player Matches through Quick Match will now query a higher number of games before attempting to join, thus returning a better variety and better quality for the player.

Additionally, we’ve added some gameplay, HUD and options enhancements. For example, brightness settings will be saved across both single-player and multiplayer; players will be able to instantly punish medics who maliciously team kill and revive continuously; Auto Team Balance will remain turned on after multiple map rotations, ensuring that each team always has an equal number of players; and players will be able to select either Axis or Allies in Ranked Battle games.

These enhancements will create a more streamlined gameplay experience; however, please be aware that online play is always complicated by players with non-optimal router and connection settings – don’t hesitate to refer to Xbox Live’s “best practices” for router configurations, as it will prove helpful.

Thanks!
- COD3 Multiplayer Team

And improvements they are.

Leaps over COD2:

In game system has been rebuilt Characters move more realistically. More textures and shaders in the environment
No more boarded up windows so now you can see the turn up landscape all around you. Foliage remains flattened when you walk over (you can track people now, until it is real[ly] destroyed)
Grenades leave real scorched earth. Surfaces react to bullets like they should, grass is different from steel, steel is different from wood, and wood is different from water. More than 24 characters on screen at one time. Destructable cover global winds affect smoke grenades. Now, when a tabk [tank] moves through smoke grenades the somke [smoke] will curl around it. Bullets through smoke with stream out the other side moving the smoke. Trees and grass will move with the wind

Things change:
You actually have to go through the actions of planting a bomb instead of holding A.
You have to row a boat while still trying to shoot you way to freedom. Hand to hand combat compared to the way Condemed works. CoD3 campaign takes place during the real campaign called Normandy Breakout. This is after D-day when the troops are moving inland to move the Germans back and liberate Paris.Load times are bring erased between levels. Play as Americans, British, Polish Resistance, and the Canadian army
Example: When you are fighting with the British you will fight along side the French resistance.

Multiplayer
  • 24 online
  • Single or Splitscreen [Guest support?]
  • Players choose their class ranging from medic to sniper.
  • Each ability as you earn points in rank.
  • Ex. A scout at first can only call in a couple artillery barages.
  • As they gain ability they will be able to call in a broken arrow
  • Online leaderboards track stats and rankings by specialty.
  • New
  • Multiplayer mode called War.
  • Axis and Allied teams battling for strategic locations.
    And of course vehicles.

Same old shit. Prettier graphics, more detailed.. still the same gameplay. The fact that they're hyping up a feature that i've been playing on other games since at least 1999 (Class feature - played on Team Fortress) is a bit suprising to me. I'm sure it'll end up being great, though, and wins lots of awards.. and i'm sure i'll play it and enjoy it.. it's just that i'm sick of seeing FPS games, I guess.

The fact that Infinity Ward isn't developing worries me... though I hear Treyarch (sp?) did a good job on Big Red One.

I am not really a huge FPS fan myself, but there is a lot more alluded to in that article than just "prettier graphics" (although the graphical tweaks seem pretty cool). The whole bomb-planting, boat-rowing dynamic could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how well it is implemented -- i.e. it could end up being a major PITA -- but I look forward to addition. The smoke effects sound cool, but not game-changing. If done properly, the deformed foliage could add an interesting new dynamic to the (largely unaltered) gameplay. Of course they aren't going to change the gameplay too much, it works*.

*Disclaimer: I do not have COD2, yet.
Definitely some good news. The fact that I can play as the Canadian military sold the game to me
Canada has a military?:bs:
Canada has a military?:bs:
It's actually bigger than the US army (useless info of the day). Can't wait to try out this game though, I have high hopes.
why isn't infinity ward developing it? what other games do they make other than call of duty?
I would guess that they are working on Call of Duty 4, which I'm sure will come out in Fall of 2007.
I want 2 player LIVE co-op. Then I'm sold. Everything here just sounds cosmetic. I don't want to play COD2 again, I want something new...
Agreed. I'll probably buy it either way, but fuck, SOMEONE needs to start putting online co-cop for the single player in the game other than Rare.
why isn't infinity ward developing it? what other games do they make other than call of duty?
I believe Infinity Ward is working on that 'modern' Call of Duty game. I guess as Battlefield becomes more like Unreal Tournament (Battlefield 2142), Call of Duty becomes more like Battlefield 2.

Call of Duty is the best FPS series on the market, bar none. I will buy a next-gen console for this version, and update my PC for the next Infinity Ward installment.

No Infinity Ward involvement really bothers me. I loved Call of Duty 2, but no Infinity Ward means no money from me (at least until I see reviews first). Either way, I'm going with Bill Macy and saying that Call of Duty 3 will be a slight disappointment.

I worry that will all the extra detail, the game will go drop from 60 fps to 30.

Still, I thought some of the videos looked slightly 'cartoonish'; maybe it was the coloring..

Just read through the COD3 preview in the latest OXM and it actually sounds like its coming together pretty good. There will be addition of vehicles in multiplayer. You'll be able to drive a Tank, Jeep, and Motorcycle with Sidecar :D!

That guy would have TOTALLY been dead on Veteran. I just hope they aren't going to do that shit where guys just spawn out of a corner every 5 seconds this time. The smoke effects look very improved.

New (longer) trailer of the mission called "Island Drop" here, as well as some more images on Xboxyde.

Note: From this small trailer, it shows that you now have the ability to pick up thrown grenades and toss them back at enemies before they explode!

About fucking time.

I played all three console versions last week at Activision. I absolutely loathe the idea of more WWII FPSs, but I actually had fun playing both single- and multiplayer. Vehicles seem especially fun; smoke effects are awesome; and the new melee mini-games are novel. Not sure if the FG 42 w/scope was in CoD2, but that gun owns -- machine gun with sniper scope. Hells yeah!

My preview is here.

This game will be amazing... sure, it's another WWII game, and sure, it's the same gameplay as COD2, but COD2 was amazing enough to justify that.

If someone told me I could only buy 1 Xbox 360 game in November, it would be Call of Duty 3. I just hope the controls are 100% the same as COD2, which is THE BEST controlling console FPS of all time. And hopefully they kept the Ally Speak and Cover system as well, and I REALLY hope you don't get into a bunch of fake, unrealistic melee fights.

Achievements seem possible, pretty good ones too, not to hard (I guess exept veteran, never played 2) good amount of MP. I also hope melee fights stay realistic.^

Only a couple of days left untill this one drops! Even though GoW comes out the same day, I still can't wait to see how this one turned out!

That video reminded me that they need to add a bite his fucking face button.

I love COD2 on 360 and since the multi player on this has to be even better I really am pumped to get this. Its being eclipsed by GOW for me so I wont be playing it as much to start out with but I am pumped for it none the less.

Is the game out today for sure? Then where are the reviews?

I guess all the editors in the gaming press were too busy humping GOW to remember COD3.
