Call of Juarez - Yay or Nay? (Updated 6/1)

I don't think I'm liking this game...

And I'm a huge Western nut.

The online mode is a joke.

Single player has a lot of half-baked mechanics: swinging from tree limbs (...), inconsistent stealth (just WOW), stacking up boxes so you can climb, etc.

The levels are insanely linear, too.

I'm 4 levels into it, and it's a rocky road. I hope it gets better.

Oh, and while you're playing, the game actually pauses in order to auto-save. It's shit like that which makes this game feel so half-baked.

I just picked this game up yesterday, so I'm just about 4 levels in also. I'm a western freak as well and even I have to say this game is pretty meh. Brak's post above pretty much sums it up. The graphics engine reminds me of the History Channel Civil War game, which isn't to say they are terrible, just a little off. The Billy levels where you have to use stealth and your whip to reach new areas are totally broken. The Rev Ray bits aren't too bad, and it's pretty awsome they way the character lets loose with the bible quotes as he's gunning people down. I really wanted to like this game, but it feels kind of half-assed. Maybe if thay had stuck to the FPS bits all the way through and dropped the splinter cell in the old west parts, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad. I'm going to give it a few more levels before I make any final decisions, but as of right now it's a rental at best. And I really wanted this to be another GOOD western game. Now, where is my copy of Gun...........

How's the gunplay/horse-riding/general Western tomfoolery compared to Gun? The one thing I'm disappointed in reading about thus far is that the story doesn't seem as good as Gun's. They seemed to have gone for the cliched/campy Western storyline. Is that the case?

The gunplay is pretty good -- not a whole lot to it, though.

The horse riding is unremarkable / awkward... but not as awkward as the other tacked-on platformer techniques. In the same breath, it feels tacked on.

I can say that the story is fairly interesting. You play the game as two different characters, at odds because of a misunderstanding. So that's pretty unique.

GUN's story is better, in my opinion. But Red Dead Revolver's was the best story (and game).

The game does seem to pick up steam as it goes on, but it's hard for me to recommend.

Multiplayer is HIV positive, though. Archaic, laggy and awkward. Just plain garbage, in that regard.

I think it's a good rental, but no more than that.

The graphics are generally good--especially the environments. But most objects tend to have that Perfect Dark Zero plastic look to them.

Music, sound effects, and voice are pretty much excellent.

Gameplay is very much by-the-numbers for an FPS. And, as Brak mentioned, the stealth mechanic is basically broken. That's by far the most frustrating aspect of the game.

You have to imagine that pricewise, this thing is going to do a pretty good imitation of the Balrog and Gandalf sooner than later. It seems just bizarre enough to justify a purchase in the $20-$25 range.

Seriously, how much better off would games like this be if they shipped at the $39.99 pricepoint, June release or not? Sure, they'll get some suckers at $59.99, but wouldn't they be better served getting the game out there to that many more people, maybe building some 'sleeper hit' momentum in the process? I can't imagine that the development/advertising costs of this were anywhere near that of the marquee 360 titles.

Hell, I don't know shit about the business side of this industry. But I sometimes wonder if the people in it do, either.

I'm about to start the 6th level. Personally, I like the game. Good levels, good weapons, it is interesting to alternate between the two characters - and Rev Ray is one bad hombre..

10 hour SP isnt a bad length at all, but it seems like most people dont like the game much.

I got a little excited when 1up gave it an 8 :)

...but i guess it'll have to wait until it drops to a very cheap price.

It's ten hours because you have to play parts over and over again, simply because the game is broken. ;)
Cheapy does not recommend this game.
I don't know where you got that from...I just got the game this week.

Actually, I'm kind of liking it so far. I'm on Episode VII, and I haven't had any stealth problems yet.

The game certainly won't win any awards, but so far, I'm having fun.

Totally agree with you here...I think many more people would have jumped on this on release at $40...

Rented the game and thought it was a pretty fun game, but is in no way worth $60. When the price drops to $29 I'll pick it up for sure.

I rented it and didn't think that much of it. I had a really hard time reading any of the text. Coudn't try a mutiplayer game beacuse the servers where down at the time.
