I've got a very large CD collection and I don't want to be switching mp3s all the time. I do enough of that with my discman. For you music freaks out there, is 40GB enough space? Also, how does the iPod handle transfering concert CDs - are there gaps between songs? Thanks! :D
How large is "very large"? I know 40GB will hold a lot of music, but you're gonna have to give us a number here...
Word. 40 GB is a LOT of music, but you say you have a large collection so...
But, the iPod is fast, there usually is no major delay in between songs.

i just bought a 40 gb mp3 player, and am currently filling it up with cds. so i'm not sure of the answer, but i do know that it holds at least 25.

actually, i was also concerned with the size of the memory, if it would be enough. i asked my friend who has a 40 gb ipod, and he said that he has about 300 cds on his, and it's only about 15 gb of memory, which means it should be able to hold around 800, give or take a few depending on the length of the album and the size of the files such.

but how much space is still available?

I'm at about 25-30 GB.

it's overkill in my position, all i have is like 1 gig or so of mp3s which must be around 200-300 songs. unless u have a huge stack of cds AND buy/download music heavily i wouldn't recommend a 40gb.

Let's see... if we figure an average 192kbit/sec quality, 40GB gives us 1,750,000 or so seconds, or roughly 480 hours.

So: probably not enough for all your music ever - but more than enough to carry on your person.
I have a 20g iRiver and i haven't had to worry about juggling at all.
Same here. But most of my songs are 192KBPS (only about 100 or so are 360KBPS) and I haven't added to my collection in a long time. I have 974 songs and it takes 6.49GB

5884 songs currently in my Windows Media Player.
All at 192 or higher.
Takes up 34.5 gigs.
About 30 of those gigs are rock.
Other 5 go to soundtracks or rap :p

I got 260 gigs :p
I don't have quite that many MP3s but my collection still won't fit on a 40 GB player. I've got about 50+ GB of music.

Wait wait, I meant 260 gigs space on my hard drive, compared to 40 gigs of space :p

I only got 35 gigs of music

I've got a collection around 1,000 CDs, so I understand the desire to hold as much music as possible. But I don't really need to have my entire collection with me at all times. I think that 40 GB is a perfectly fine amount of storage -- it's already good enough for more than half my collection.
