my dvd on my xbox died and i wondered if i can fix it. everything else works fine but the dvd isn't able to read discs anymore. i played with the pot resistor but i did more harm than good (started to burn some chips) its out of warranty so i wanna try and fix it myself before i decide to just chuck it. can anyone help?

You played with whonow?

If you can find a cheap replacement DVD drive from another 360 then it shouldn't be very hard at all to swap out. If you're talking about buying a non-360 drive, that's a diff'rent story.

Yes you can swap the drive out but it must be the same model as the one currently in it. when you do it though you can just swap the board in the drive old drive for the one in the new one, or actually flash the new one with the firmware from the old one. if you want some instructions the links below should help, and just remember anytime you do this you take the risk of breaking your 360 more.

yea i was talking about a xbox dvd drive.
i was reading somewhere and there is some sort of key that must match the motherboard to work? i dunno, i just want my xbox to work.

my friend has swapped out dvd drives for his xbox before, but I'm not sure how he did it.

so its definitely possible.

I know it's possible but the new drive must match something on the motherboard or it will only play movies not any 360 games. And MS wants over $100 to fix if it's out of warranty. So at that point you might as well pick up a cheap arcade unit.
