i heard "the world ends with you" is a pretty good one.
It most certainly is, couldn't recommend it more.

I actually like "my world my way" its quirky, fun, and im about 2 hours into it and i look forward to playing it. I mean my all time fav rpg is Lunar SSSC for the ps1 and id rate my world my way in my top 10.

Etrian Odyssey 1 and 2 are both really good if you like old school 3D dungeon crawlers (like Wizardry or Might and Magic) Both are quite tough however.

Throwing another one out there but it's probably a long shot.
Checkout Shiren the Wanderer, it's a roguelike and is my most played DS game.

FF Chocobo Tales is much more of a minigame game than a real RPG, I got bored with it.
I personally hated The World Ends With You but I know I'm in the minority on that one.

If you like the tactical turn-based games, you might also try Luminous Arc. Out of the games I have, I would recommend:
Pokemon (any of them) - yes, it's got real RPG elements one you get past the kiddie stuff
ChronoTrigger
Etrian Odyssey (I have both but have only gotten through most of the first one, it's HARD)
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy IV
Disgaea
Luminous Arc
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Dragon Quest IV
Dragon Quest V

Im not a huge J-RPG fan, but The World Ends With You was my 3rd fav game of 2008. Stunningly original and brilliant. A must play.

I continue to be amazed how the DS has really become the go-to rpg console for this generation. That may be more a failing of the PS3 and 360 to have more than handful of great RPGs each so far, but the DS does seem perfectly suited to the genre (especially to remakes of classics).

Advance Wars Days of Ruins, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Age of Empires: The Age of King, Age of Empires: Mythologies are turn based strategy games with little or no rpg elements. Robocalypse is console RTS(real time strategy) and Elebits: The Adventures of Kai & Zero is action/adventure game with very light rpg elements.
