can anyone recommend me some good music? (read: not crap!)
Freezepop is bomb man, I really dig thier music

also, if you have any interest in techno at all, check out Da Rude's Rush and Sasha's 2 disc cd, I can't remember the name of it... hope you enjoy
I agree, Darude and Sasha are awesome, but you hear Sandstorm EVERYWHERE. its played at the Joe Louis Arena all the time during Red Wings games.

If you like folk rock, you might like my favorite band, Carbon Leaf. Their third and fourth albums have a celtic-infused mandolin rock sound to them, but their most recent album has a more mellow pop-rock sound, something like Counting Crows or John Mayer. They're pretty unique, and very talented; the lead singer writes really good lyrics. They recently signed to Vanguard records, but before that, they won an American Music Award (AMA) for the Best Unsigned Band in America, and they played live on the AMA award show. They put on a great live show, so if they're in your area, check them out. On their website, you can download four songs off each album (six off their live album), except for their newest CD. The newest CD does stream while you're on their website though. Check 'em out.

A couple CDs I have that are pretty good that most people have never heard of:

metal:
Monster Voodoo Machine - SufferSystem

ska:
Dance Hall Crashers - The Old Album

Here are a few bands that usually never get on the radar but are fairly big in their own circles. Most of these I would say are "love em or hate em" but definately check em out.

Beat Happening
Moldy Peaches
Fugazi
Hayden
Brassy
Dinosaur Jr.
Petra Haden
Possum Dixon
the Rentals
That Dog
Sparklehorse
Soul Coughing

Lemme know what you think, I'm very interested to get anyone's opinion on these bands.

Mr Bungle definately. Not a band out there that sounds close to them.

I totally second My Bloody Valentine - Loveless.

One of my favorite lp's ever - Kevin Shields is my guitar hero.

A few others I've been digging on lately (not neccessarily new stuff)....

Caviar-The Thin Mercury Sound ...think Beck meets The Psychedlic Furs meets a wall of Marshalls

The Appleseed Cast - Low Level Owl Vol.1 / Vol. 2 ...2 seperate cds best listened to as a whole. Awesome trippy delayed out ambient songs that aren't keyboard driven. They're a traditional 4 piece but sound like they're from Venus. Fantastic stuff.

Longwave - The Strangest Things ...u2 meets Television ... excellent catchy songs with a great spacey 80's vibe

The Jealous Sound - Kill Them With Kindness ...ex-Knapsack frontman's newer project. Catchy hooks, big guitars, and one of the most unique rock voices out there. Great songwriting.

Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom ...The most creative use of sampling in a band ever IMO. Standup string bass player...drums that are guaranteed to make your booty shake - and M Doughty's excellent deadpan delivery of the hippest cat beatnik poetry freakout you've ever heard. If you like Cake...they SUCK in the shadow of the Cough.

and that's just a few from the top of my head...

oh...and reading the updates...if your into Dinosaur Jr...J Masics is my second favorite guitarist! Sadly, he's broken Dinosaur Jr. up, but the logical progression continues with J Mascis and the Fog - they've got 2 lps out, and if you like the Dino, it's more of the same! Great stuff!

edit - I'll throw some Blur in there also....
