How many years did GBA games still come out after the DS hit...

just wondering how long do you think companies will make games for the DS system with the 3DS coming out in march...

If i had to guess we will probally still get games for the DS until end of 2013

though i say the pokemon white/black will be the last pokemon game to grace the Ds system

also too lazy to look it up... just how much powerful is the 3ds compair to the dsi

i dont think it would be worth the 250 bucks just to buy it in only play the games in 2d....

four years after the DS came out, the last GBA game was released. Not that hard to use Google.[/QUOTE]

but how fast did the number of games dry up... mostly was wondering do people think the same will happen to the DS when the 3DS hits as well.... if mod wants to merger this into the 3ds topic as well that will work as well....... long day i thought i was posting in there

Looking at the list on half.com by release date there were approximately 40 GBA games released in 2007 (I didn't count anything that wasn't released), around 5 of them were compilation games so around 35 new GBA games were released for the final year of the handheld with the exception of some bundled game that was released in 2008.

Considering it looks like the 3DS will play DS games (yeah, I know, surprise right?), I don't think there's going to be a sudden drop in DS games being released. It'll be gradual over probably the next 4-5 years, but I think it'll be like the PS1 and PS2. The PS2 came out and for 4-5 years there were still PS1 games being made, as it was cheaper.

Granted, the last couple years on the PS1 was mostly sports games. I just have this feeling that until the 3DS sales reach a large number (with the DS selling an ungodly number of units, who knows what this number will be), there won't really be a drop in DS games. Heck, Nintendo coulda used Pokemon Black & White as a 3DS launch title in the US, but they didn't.

It would depends on the sales of 3DS. If the 3DS is a sucess you could see some DS project being converted to 3DS. If the 3DS didnt do too well then Nintendo would try to milk some more from DS. I think 2011 is the last strong year for DS. Fall 11 will be fine but by 2012 publisher will want to focus on getting stuff on 3DS. There might still be a few good games in 2012 but certainly a lot less

I don't think the 3DS will sell enough to stop the DS from getting good releases. Sure, 2012 won't be as good as 2011 or 2010, but eh. I think we'll see quality DS releases through 2012, sort of like with the GBA/DS.

The DS launched at $150. The 3DS will launch at $250, and games will be more expensive on it than the DS. I just dunno if that's going to be the end of the DS or if for at least 2-3 more years. Maybe, maybe not.

I don't think so unless the 3DS game sales were cannabalizing the sales of DS games. (Like how everyone starting retrofitting movies to be 3D.)

If you were a designer, why not design for 2 systems (and installed bases) instead of just 1. (Since the 3DS has backward compatibility.) I think we'll still get some quality DS compatible titles in the next few years. (I'm thinking PS3 and PS2 as opposed to xbox360 and xbox original)

In my opinion, the 3DS release will be very similar to the PS3 release. Two very expensive machines trying to "replace" a system that:

A.) almost everyone has
B.) has a large collection of games
C.) has a large casual audience (AKA video gamers who will be less willing to invest in new and costly technologies)

The PS3 was released in 2006 and PS2 games are still being released. I'd say the DS has about five years left. If Nintendo wanted to replace the DS quickly, they should have eliminated the cartridge to allow for lower manufacturing costs. Of course, they would have risked pulling a PSP Go.

awesome! Well said.:)

^^

Agreed, like any other new system all development is going to be focused or shifted from the DS/DSi to the 3DS. So any big name stuff still coming out for the DS this year and maybe into early next year will pretty much dry up all big name projects for it.

I foresee seeing shovelware trickling out for it for two-three years maybe longer if sales are enough to bother, but I don't see it being a dead platform for what's already been stated in the short term.

Hope I didn't retread what 62t wrote too much, since I only skimmed what he wrote, but was thinking more in line with what happened to some older systems.

Bottom line, is if its still popular games will continue to be released if they sell well, if not then it'll dry up as demand decreases and adoption of the new platform increases, just like every system from the 2600 onward.
