Can I keep an Amazon order open to make use of coupon?

Is there a way to keep an Amazon order open to make use of your coupon past the original order list? I seem to remember seeing a post here a few days ago where someone mentioned something like "Just put in a preorder game from 2010 so you can add stuff later."

I used a coupon awhile back on an order (cod:mw2, fallout 3 goty) but then remembered the above statement and would obviously want to get the most out of the coupon benefit that I can. I apologize if this is frowned upon but the coupon would decide whether or not I get a few more games in the future or not.

You can add gift card balances to existing pre-orders, but promo codes like ECA and Amazon trade in promotions can only be used when you order.
