Can someone reccommend a console-like controller for PC FPSs?

i have been playing a bit of doom 3 using the keyboard and have found that when the action gets intense that i long for my ps2/xbox controllers

can someone give me a purchase suggestion that is both high-quality and reasonably priced? please be specific if you can about the brand and model
 
i didn't even know you could play PC FPS with controllers... but i've heard a lot of people recommend a ps2 to usb adapter so you can just use your ps2 controller.

Seriously though, I'm not sure why you'd perfer a controller over a mouse. Might take a while getting used to it but it's alot faster and more precise.
 
I dunno if it's possible to do but there is a PS2 USB control converter but Doom 3 has a lot of possible key commands. I dunno if a ps2 controller would be able to be mapped out like that.
 
There are some great adapters at Lik-Sang that allow you to use actual console controllers as some have already mentioned. I have an Xbox controller adapter that works great. I'm considering picking up the recently released SNES adapter as well.

Still though, if you are looking to play FPS, just try mouse and kb. You'll thank yourself later.
 
i was hoping i would still be able to use the keyboard but map some of the essential functions like move, turn and shoot to a console-like controller

i definitely will give the mouse and keyboard a few more trys before i wholly give in

Yeah, get used to it a bit. What games are you playing by the way?

this converter does not seem like a bad deal. I may order one next week some time

and do give the Mouse and Keyboard more time, as they are far superior to a controller for FPS
 
Wow, usually people are complaining the other way around that they can't stand to use a controller for FPS'. The keyboard and mouse, in general, gives you so much more control but if you are used to playing console FPS' with a controller than you should stick with whatever you are most comfortable with. Were you looking for a controller that uses a directional pad or the thumbstick for primary movement? Because a lot of PC controllers come with one or the other, or the ones that have both might not have the layout you're comfortable with...

..that adaptor posted that lets you link your Xbox controller also looks nice. I was looking into getting the keyboard and mouse adaptor for the xbox.
 
Wanting a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard for a pc fps is like wanting to eat at Mcdonalds instead of a 5 star restaurant.
 
This controller is more expensive but it is what I use. It also works on PS2 and has programmable XBOX-like triggers on the back in addition to the normal PS2 layout.

I couldn't get it to work right unless I used the program JoyToKey, but then you can use it on everything (even browsing windows).

Another EDIT: By the way, I do prefer a keyboard and mouse, but the gamepad allows me to sit on my couch comfortably.
