Leaked flyer from July 13 shows Canadian retailer advertising "new low price" of PS3. Price drop of $150 will put PS3 at same cost as Xbox 360 Elite.

PS3 price drop in Canada One of the biggest criticisms of the PlayStation 3 has been its price: $599 in the United States and $699 in Canada. Both professional and armchair analysts have taken a wide range of stances on when, if and how much Sony should drop the price of its console, and now Platformers has obtained proof that at least one major Canadian retailer is planning to advertise a "new low price" for the PS3—$549, the same price as the Xbox 360 Elite.

This camphone shot, given to us by a source close to Canadian retail, is from a Canadian retailer circular for July 13, and shows off the PS3 at its new price point of $549. (Click for the full picture.) We've confirmed the shot's contents with the source, and in addition to the new price said retailer is giving away a free Blu-Ray movie with each PS3 purchase.

For reference, on Most Canadian Web sites the Xbox 360 Elite is $549, and three different 360 Premium bundles are $499 each; the Wii is $289.

What this means outside of Canada has yet to be determined; Sony has obviously not announced an official price drop yet, but with E3 coming up next week it's a likely setting for a surprise price-drop bomb. And will Microsoft follow suit by cutting the price on one or all of the 360 models? Going by historical trends, the 360 is long overdue for a price cut, and many expect Microsoft to roll out the newer, cooler-running 360s along with a reduced price. One thing's for sure: Sony's finally reacting to the PS3's reception in the marketplace, and it's time for analysts and companies to put up or shut up.

The ad they're talking about is for Best Buy.

I hope this ends up being true, I have just enough credit at Blockbuster for one of these at the moment (at $550) Add in the 5 free movies and I'd say now is the time to jump on a PS3 for me.

Almost everyone but EB was charging $699 for a period there.... the MSRP didn't change, but you get the impression somewhere along the line (I'd guess wholesale price), something changed, because it's been down at $659 again at most places for a while...

UPDATE] Today, Sony confirmed to GameSpot that a fusillade of reports from US retailers had augured last week. As of July 9, the PlayStation 3's North American price point is going south. The next-generation console will cost $499 in the US and $549 in Canada, the same price as the discontinued 20GB model. So far, the price drop is for North America only. "This news does not affect any other PS3 territory," said Dave Karraker, Sony Computer Entertainment America.

In case anyone had any doubts.

If Tekken 6 and the new Ratchet and Clank game come out this year, I might pick up a PS3. But I think I'm going to wait for more games.

I might pick one up to use primarily as a Bluray player, and to play any RPGs that PS3 ends up getting that aren't on xbox. A little more credit at either EBG or BBV will cover a lot of it... so I might finally do it. The 5 free movies you get aren't that great, I'd take Casino Royale and the 2 Pirates movies over those 5 in a heartbeat.

That's a tip from RFD to get the PS3 price down to 472 before taxes.
Basically, you need to get the Best Buy 25$ PS3 coupon, then you need to apply for the Best Buy credit card which will give you 10% off your FIRST purchase with the card. But of a hassle, but you almost save 75 bucks... and that's probably the best you can do until boxing day.

That, plus the 5 Blu-Rays makes this kind of amazing!

I ended up buying one yesterday. $168 including taxes from EBG. Yes I did have $350 credit stored up, which certainly helped. Then used some BBV credit to buy 2 more bluray DVDs, and bought Ninja Gaiden Sigma from Bestbuy as they had it for $59 - $5 coupon. A friend of mine went and did the Bestbuy thing like posted on RFD though. Again stock online showed they had no PS3s, but when he called he was told they still had 7 or 8.

I'm not too crazy about the games yet, but even that price for a Bluray player is pretty cool, already sent in my mail-in form for the 5 free DVDs and ordered Pirates 1 & 2 and Casino Royale from Amazon.com. It was still cheaper to order those movies from amazon than get them locally from Bestbuy/Futureshop.

I get my first paycheck next Friday which will be $672...
It's still way too much :/ Plus, no games I want till 2008.
HDTV here I come!

Picked one up yesterday, played with it for a while. Looking forward to finding Motorstorm on the cheap, but other than that, nothing else has me interested right now. Guess I'll wait until Heavenly Sword and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune come out before it gets any real use.

I work at the local Best Buy and the PS3 price drop took effect Monday afternoon (like right after Sony announced it), plus we have a special coupon book (they should give you one as you enter) where you can save another $25 when you buy one before August 30! So, buy before the end of August and it's only $525!!! I know I'll be taking advantage of that deal.

If you apply for a BB credit card, you can also get 10% off your first purchase! Definitely worth the hit to your credit.

Just call the local EB Games to see if the price drop applied to the used/ refurbed ones, and yes it did, and now the price is (get this) $524. Which means, you can save a buck by going to them instead of BB. I don't know about you, and even if I didn't work there, I would still go to Best Buy simply because I find it a better experience there. Screw the damn buck!

I see on the Futureshop website they have sweetened the deal with yet another free DVD. It's another one of those "Pick 1 from these 5" deals, but actually a good selection. Having watched a bluray movie in 1080p now, I have to say it's a great way to get into bluray with the added bonus that eventually sony should have some (more?) games to play on it. Originally I was hoping that HD-DVD was going to win out, and now I honestly don't care who wins the HD war, but I hope someone wins so I don't have to decide which format to get. Now I have about 10 HD and 10 BD, and I had just purchased the Matrix Trilogy and Planet Earth in HD.

Price drop is temporary... the 60gb model is being discontinued next month, then the only available model will be the 80gb bundle at the higher price. Sony just did this to move some old stock before the Xmas rush.

Bad move by Sony. The $700 price tag was driving a lot of potential customers away. With the price drop, people are buying it as a BR player and in anticipation of MGS4/FF#/other killer apps. Sony can bundle in the kitchen sink with the 80GB model, but if it's $700, sales aren't going anywhere.

Microsoft is definitely breathing a sigh of relief, though.
Does blockbuster sell the PS3? I have $140ish there in credit. Would be good to put towards that.
I bought mine there, so ya they do. I had $50 on my account at another BBV which didn't have any PS3s though. I did use the $500 on my trading cards. :applause:

I never knew it was possible for a company to be this stupid. They blow the lead that they had worked hard to obtain through the ps and ps2 through many stupid design choices and general reluctance to act. Then they lose most of their exclusives thanks in part to the aforementioned and the recurring general reluctance to act. Now they finally did something right and they go ahead and spit in everyone's face? What do they not want to make money? Is Uwe Boll suddenly the president of Sony?

It's like they want to fail.

Next up... MGS4 to the xbox 360. I know I thought this one was dead and buried but the mention of Konami rolling the idea around in their heads (and making it public knowledge) shortly before E3 and now Sony's excellent blunder.... its seeming more and more like a reality.

So I wouldn't worry about it.

Something tells me they expected Microsoft to drop their price, and when nothing happened they just wussed out.

Although really if they sell the PS3 for 3-4 months, everyone will *know* it's $499/$549. When the price shoots up $100 for no apparent reason come Christmas time, sales will flatline... Seriously who will believe a salesman overcharging them, but spouting some crap about getting an extra 20GB
