can't connect to steam

Anyone having problems connecting to Steam? I try opening it up but it gets stuck on "Updating Steam..." and then it tells me that I have no internet connection, but I do. Wondering if this is just me or something bigger.

My Steam has been downloading slow as dirt for the past 3 months. Occasionally, I also have trouble connecting. I think something is wrong on their end.
