Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Can someone explain to me what Wifi is used for? Is it just to sell items to each other?
Well there is the shop thing like you said, but you can also go through boss rush mode course 1. Unfortunately, you can't use any secret characters on-line, but it's still pretty fun nonetheless.
i think i just finished the first ending... what do i do next to get a better ending?
You got the ending right after beating the sisters? That's the "first ending". The best ending is gotten when you use the Sanctuary spell to kill the sisters.

how does one aquire the sanctuary spell??

I finally got around to playing and I'm impressed so far (liking it way more than DoS, for sure). I'm a little stuck right now, but I'm going to try to figure it out on my own. If I can't figure it out, I'll ask for help. :(

how the hell do you beat Richter? I have the holy mail, jet black whip, and the offensive spell equip so I can do atleast 100 pt damage to him. I hit him 2 or 3 times when he throws his boomerang then jump away but the bastard tries to get to close and slides hits me and whips me. This is getting to nutty. Also the 13th street stage..how the hell do I stop that train from pushing me back to the beginning?

Richter: I used shuriken, but boomerang might work, too, if it has the range to attack him without letting him attack you. Have you mastered the skill? Also, jump a lot to avoid being hit.

For the train, you have probably already tried the right thing, but with the wrong character. For no apparent reason, you need specifically to be controlling one of the characters (I forget which one), character A, and call the other, character B, to help. It won't work if you are controlling character B and call character A to help.

Just a couple of hours in and I'm loving it. The exotic locales in the portraits and the 2 character design have freshened up a series that was getting a bit stale.

Playing through the hard mode, which can be infuriating if only for the fact that some really annoying enemies can do waaaaaaay too much damage, and that the heal spell is a little disappointing.

Still a fun game.

Castlevania could benefit from a few changes for the next iteration, if it lands on the DS:

1) More dual partner stuff (motorcycles, pushing, etc) if that system is continued.

2) Ability to write notes on the map. It's hard to remember all the "Why did I continue there?" rooms when you gain a new ability. So being able to write "need double jump" or "can't push this out of the way" notes would be pretty awesome. Basically just an extension of the little feather markers.

3) Not letting me sell equipment I have equipped. That's just stupid.

4) Continue the quest system, but add more elements to it. Maybe it plays more directly into the story of the game, can alter the endings on a higher degree, gives you more worthwhile items.

5) Less useless equipment. Either give me more meaningful stuff or throw out a lot of it.

6) Make the actual castle the star of the game again. Less warp points, less save rooms, less empty corridors, etc. Throw in a TON of enemies. For inspiration, watch Vampire Hunter D, and pay attention to the first time D goes into Count Magnus's castle. I want enemy swarms like that - where they are crawling all over each other and such. If you're not going to update the sprites that much, at least placate me like this.

7) Fix Charlotte's running animation. Looks too stiff.

8) Maybe include (and I doubt this will happen) a better hub system that includes surrounding areas. I.e., maybe you can venture into a town outside the castle, and then a forest near it, and caves. Almost like Castlevania 2. But only do this if the main castle gets better treatment.

I guess that's it. These are the ramblings of a madman, but I still wanted to say them.

Spoilers Below:

I finally finished my Richter speed run.

I finished a Richter game in 49:23. Normal mode. Ended on Level 23.

Damn was Death/Dracula and True Dracula hard. Only was doing 45-55 damage per hit.

If you guys are interested, I posted a quick write up on how I tackled the speed run. I'll post it here. :)

I really like this idea.

I'm having a pretty rough time getting through the game using Richter with level 1 cap. You pretty much die in one hit, though I suppose you can actually survive a hit if you get enough max life ups. I'm currently trying to beat Legion; I really hate the shaking lasers and spinning beam attack.

Anyone here actually beat level one Richter mode?
So did anyone find this game a huge jump in difficulty from the original Castlevania DS?
A huge DROP in difficulty, you mean.

Awhile back, I wrote something to this effect to my contact at Konami. I'm with ya.

The initial game... yes.

But try a level 1 cap on hard mode. Nearly impossible without a proper setup.

I just picked this up actually 2 weeks ago but I've been too busy to stop by here. Picked up for full price, a few days after the CC sale, I was pretty sad I couldn't get it for cheap but I did have store credit at GameCrazy. I go in there buy the game, and the cashier was like, "One of the local GameCrazy has a bunch of these pre-orders left, apparently Castlevania isnt so popular there." I asked him where, and I went home thinking about my purchase. My friend lives near there and he did stop by my house. I gave him the game unopened, and reciept and asked him to see if he could get the pre-order bonus for me (if not I told him to return it and rebuy it again XD). Turned out they gave him the pre-order bonus since they had a few left. This was a few weeks ago, I am surprised that they even had some left even so long after its release. I haven't got the game back for my friend for about 2 weeks now though, so I'm eagerly waiting to play it tomorrow finally and recieve the Castlevania bonus.

Yep. I flew through DoS with only a couple deaths on some of the bosses (same goes for Aria and SOTN as well.) I've actually been killed by normal enemies in this one. It's still pretty easy though.
I love this game! It is my first ever Castlevania, so I am going to attempt to find Dawn of Sorrow.

Do you like my sig? :D
yes, do you like mine? ;)

DoS was the only other castlevania I've played and (maybe only because of that) I think it was a little harder than PoR. I'm at Death right now and I haven't needed to even think about the boss battles too much to figure out the right strategy while I remember having a hard time with DoS (and using a walkthrough).

is anyone still playing this game? cuz this thread seemed to have died....

but anywayz im stuck at the final fight with dracula and death, any advice?

and i unlocked the nest of evil and its really tough too...
If you finish the nest of evil, you unlock a skill that makes the last fight a cakewalk.
QFT. After Nest of Evil, the final battle with Drac and Grim is a piece of cake.

If you dont want to do that, then completely level up some subweapons that are powerful vs. Dark. Then spam the shit out of the two bosses with it.
Alright, I'm seriously stuck in the Nest of Evil. I'm almost to the bottom; I can easily beat the two Frankensteins, but then in the next room, I CAN'T BEAT THE DAMN ELECTRIC MERMEN THINGS. I've tried lots of things, lots of different co-op attacks, and I can jump around and maybe survive for 5-10 seconds, but as soon as one of them grabs me, I'm as good as dead. How in the HELL do I beat these things?
I go with Charlotte's "Chain Lightning" spell. Once you're at a pretty high level, one fully charged blast of that can own an entire roomful of Mermen! I think the damage actually multiplies with more enemies onscreen, so you can really clear a room with that one.

Yeah, this was quite a BUMP, but I just beat the game last night so I've been catching up on the discussion. I managed to get 1000% map completion, but a few obscure goals elude me. My #1 question is this: what/where the hell is the "rare dodo" bird????? That was one of the only two quests that I missed.

If I remember correctly, the dodo bird was an enemy in the desert area. It's hard to find because it doesn't show up all the time, and even when it does the time it sees you it runs away. You have to kill it before it goes offscreen to complete the quest.

Hope that helps. If not, I can pop in my copy and and try to give you a more detailed description of where it's at and how to kill it.
