My Cd burner is 40x, and it used to run at that speed, but now it only goes to about 4.9x. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, and I was wondering if there was a common solution?

sound like it may be dying. is it an old burner or do you use it alot?

another thing, have you tried different burning software? i had a problem recently with my 6 month old comp stopped burning cd's. it started burning them fine, then after a few tracks the burn speed would drop and then it would just stop altogether. i tried a different burning program and it works fine.

Nope, I use it only time to time (like, less than 2 a week). I'll give some different software a shot, though.

also what speed do you burn at? high speeds will wear your laser out faster. and increase the chance of errors. i've read that you don't want to burn faster than half the max speed.

One thing you can check, if you goto control panel -> system -> device manager then pick your IDE ATA controllers... if you select Primary or Secondary and see if anythings transfer mode is set to PIO... that can slow down burners.. they should be all set to Ultra DMA Modes... to fix this you have to uninstall the channel and then check for new hardware

It does it automatically. I've never had to select a burn speed.

Nope, they're all set to DMA is availiable.

This=suckage. It just started all of a sudden. I still need to try new software, though.
