From all of the sources that I’ve read online tonight, it seems that Sony had alot to say tonight about how the PS3 has been doing and where it’s future is heading. Here’s the rundown:
 • Sony has reached their goal of shipping 1 million units in 2006
 • Sony’s goal for 2007: Shipping 6 million units by March 2007
 • Much talked about Flow will be released to the Playstation Store later this month
 • You’ll be able to view your PS3’s hard drive content via your PSP from any wireless connection soon.
Not much, but the wireless access to the PS3 will be nice.

Sony's Sixaxis, XMB Win Technical Emmy At CES

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has awarded the PlayStation 3 Sixaxis controller with a Technology and Engineering Emmy award.

The 58th annual Technology and Engineering Emmy Awards were presented at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today. The awards were given in two areas: science, engineering and technology for broadcast television and personal television.

The latter category includes interactive television, video games, and for the first time, the Internet, mobile phones, private networks and personal media players.

The only other video game related nominees were the PSP Xross Media Bar for the PSP, for Outstanding Innovation and Achievement in Advanced Media Technology, for the Best Use of Personal Media Display and Presentation Technology. GameTap was also nominated for Outstanding Innovation and Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for the Best Use of “On Demand” Technology Over the Public Internet.

The Emmy is not the only award won by the PlayStation 3 at CES, with the console also receiving the CES Best of Innovations Award for 2007, PC World’s 20 Most Innovative Products Award, Sound and Vision’s Editor’s Choice Award and DEG’s Emiel N. Petrone Digital Innovation Award.

Sony Plans up to 100 Blu-ray Video Titles in 2007

ony Corp. said on Monday it would release up to 100 movie titles on the high-definition Blu-ray video disc standard this year, as it pits its next-generation DVD format against rival HD DVD.

Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. video unit plans to release a similar number of Blu-ray titles, while independent studio Lionsgate Entertainment said it would offer 40 to 50 such videos.

HD DVD proponents, however, said on Sunday their format was growing at breakneck speed and projected HD DVD movie title sales would exceed $600 million in North America for 2007.

Both formats offer many times the capacity of current generation DVDs, giving them enough capacity to hold a full-length movie in high-definition formats. Each is supported by a different group of manufacturers and movie studios.

Sony supports Blu-ray and Toshiba Corp. supports HD DVD.

Mike Dunn, president worldwide of Fox Home Entertainment, projected that by the end of the first quarter of 2007, Blu-ray would outsell HD DVD by 3.5 to 1. "At that point it gets difficult for retailers to commit to HD DVD," he said.

Video/listen to music?
Eh. The wireless sounds cool...but what would you want to view?
Well... When I travel, I'll have access to a HD worth of MP3's that all wouldn't fit onto my 1GB memory stick. As well as the movies I'll burn to the PS3 instead of converting them to fit on the PSP, again saving space on my memory stick.

Unless I'm reading it wrong, view |= stream.

Maybe they should concentrate more on selling units rather than shipping them.

I don't see why there is this rush to get 6 million out by March 2007 when the ones out right now aren't really selling out.

Yeh, you read something wrong. Everything I mentioned is (at least it will be ) possible... via streaming.

That is sold to Sony. The retailers bought them from Sony, and the retailers would not buy them unless they thought they would sell to customers. Every shipped system eventually becomes a sold one normally within a week. I don't understand why everyone makes such a big deal out of this.

30 feet?? Try miles.

The movies I have on the PS3's HD are around 600-800 and are great quality. One file could easily fit on my 1GB stick, but with this I can have them all virtually with me once this new remote feature is boosted. Nice for us who actually get out of our caves.

Remote play works nicely, even at the temporary limited distance. I can fast foward through the files as if they were actually here on the PSP which is all you really need.

Anyway, added list of release dates for games coming to US in the next couple of months.
Pass on streaming 1gig movies onto a PSP more then 30 feet away.
Yea, I forgot the PSP only works within 30 ft of a PS3. :dunce:

EDIT: And I really hope Heavenly Sword ends up being good. Probably the only game on that list that I really want at the moment. Will probably buy Oblivion eventually, and will see how Lair and Warhawk turn out.

I dont see sony making that 6 million mark by march.
Maybe by May. But 6 million by march is insane if they actually hit that .
I would be amazed.
Yea, I forgot the PSP only works within 30 ft of a PS3. :dunce:
Ugh, what I meant was I would pass on streaming ANYTHING more then 30 feet. After that it will look like really bad and choppy.
I find it amusing that 4 of the 7 games are 360 games....I'm still waiting to buy another game (besides Resistance)
Yeah, I enjoyed that too. Way to go Sony, port us over some Xbox 360 games that are months old, or even a year (Elder Scrolls).

Guess my 1 game will remain my 1 game for a long time to come.

So did the event start 3 hours late and have Sony talk about how they are god of everything and that people should buy an outragously price "video game" system to fight off historically correct giant crabs?
Ugh, what I meant was I would pass on streaming ANYTHING more then 30 feet. After that it will look like really bad and choppy.
oh ok. To be fair, I think you should at least try it. I wasn't planning on watching movies anyhow. It will be used for MP3 playing.

I guess it does kinda suck for 360 owners. I really don't care what other systems they are on, since I currently only own a PS3. But this is more the fault of developers, rather than Sony. There is only so much Sony can do to keep exclusives. In the end, development prices are rising, and developers need to make a profit, which is why we have so many multiplatform games. I really only see 1st party titles staying exclusive this gen, which is where, I think, Sony really shines.

I really think you should be blaming yourself, more than Sony though. Someone who plops down $500/$600 on a console, better do some research beforehand. It isn't that hard to find out how many exclusives the PS3 will be getting this year. I know you were criticizing people for being stupid and paying $600 for Resistance, but ironically, it seems you have done this exact same thing. I see you prefer HD-DVD over Blu-ray, and don't find any other games, aside from Resistance, worth owning.

You do have every right to blame Sony, but for someone who finds little interest in the system and STILL buying it, part of that blame should fall on yourself.

You mean other than the stacks of PS3s sitting in BBs, Wal-marts, and gamestops across the country?

Supply and Demand. If they shipped them to retailers and no one bought (sold) them, the retailers will not buy more from Sony because they can't dump their current stock. Hence, the difference between "Shipped" and "Sold".
Every shipped system eventually becomes a sold one normally within a week.
Hardly... The best buy across the street from me has had PS3 since Dec 28th, the Target next to it has had 6 for almost a week, and the 2 ebs downtown both have 3 20s and 2 60s. So in a week's period I can tell you that they are not moving, because the hype has died and reality has set in that there are no games worth buying and there won't be for at least another 2 months, if not more.
Yeh, you read something wrong. Everything I mentioned is (at least it will be ) possible... via streaming.
Stealing a page from TheCrotch's book of tricks, emphasis mine. I'd be amazed if we saw streaming by March. This will be a June thing, at absolute earliest. You'll be able to look at pictures and delete stuff off of your hard drive, but music/video streaming won't be a reality probably until 2008. Oh, and the article you linked speculates wildly on what this connection could be, offering zero definites.

The quote in question:

Also, the idea of being able to view your PS3 hard drive from your PSP from anywhere there’s a wireless connection is a pretty neat idea. I just wonder how long that will go. Will we be able to view video clips, pictures, etc. that are located on your PS3 on your PSP? Will we be able to edit the information on our PS3 hard drives (like let’s say I decide I want to delete something from my PS3 drive while I’m away, will that be possible).

I don't doubt it'll happen eventually, but the way I read that seems more like "Sony is doing something with the PSP-PS3" rather then "This is the something we're doing with the PSP-PS3".

I'm not going to argue about how well the streaming will work because we haven't seen it working yet. Only that there are products out there that do similair feats with minor hiccups. We'll see.

Same with when the update will come, can't say when it'll happen and it isn't useful to debate it. I know March starts a new fiscal year, so I wouldn't be amazed if Sony really starts pushing things out then. They have new region launches slated for that time and I personally

4 out of 7 games are ports of 360 games. Why would it suck to be a 360 owner? Ive been playing these just fine for the past year and its not like Sony is adding anything that wonderful to the games.

I bought a PS3 just for Blu-Ray. Aside from Full Auto 2 (Didn't like Resistance, remember?), I won't own any PS3 game for a long ass time. I don't care. Its a cheap Blu-Ray player and nothing more. I am, however, going back and playing some PS2 games that I missed, that is if they don't look like total crap thanks to the PS3 to PS2 problem Sony has yet to rectify.

I REALLY feel bad for people who bought this as a gaming system. $500-600 is alot to play Resistance and some old 360 ports available cheaper then the PS3's asking price.

That list has many many more games I would play than the PS3.

Kameo: Elements of Power
Perfect Dark Zero
Project Gotham Racing 3
Call of Duty 2

All are playable games and different type of games.

Don't. I've been having a blast with Resistance, Full Auto 2, Genji, Untold Legends, Motorstorm (import), Blast Factor, Sudoku, and Gripshift. I'm looking forward to Flow, Calling All Cars, Tekken 5: DR, Heavenly Sword, Eye of Judgement (that's still March, right?), and more. I own a 360 (as my sig shows), so all of those are PS3 exclusives. It's an excellent game machine now imo, and will only get better.

The PS3 had a relatively good launch line up and while it didn't have a killer December game (like Elebits for the Wii and DOA 4 (it was highly anticipated at the time) for the 360) it still had a few solid titles. Furthermore, even though a good number of games were 360 ports, most of the 360 games were Xbox/PS2 ports. It's my opinion that the PS3 had a wider variety of games at launch (or launch window, w/e) then the 360, and that those games look better then first gen 360 games.

I really don't think this should turn into a Sony/Microsoft thing. I just find it annoying that Sony does what they always do. Shipped numbers |= sold, info that they're doing something vague with their systems at some point, and the usual self flatuating involved with every press conference (something I find annoying from Apple to Zenith, assuming Zenith does keynotes somewhere). I'm just annoyed that it seems like another Sony press conference had little to no substance (at least in their games department).

I'm hoping that the "stream over the Internet" thing will work well and will basically nullify the advantage that the 60GB model of PS3 has (since it can use "remote play"). There's no reason to think that it won't work perfectly for MP3s and photos. Videos are the only thing that might be problematic. The only part that I'm not sure about is the necessity to keep your PS3 on in order to access it remotely.

I would assume your PS3 would have to be on to stream anything since when the system is off there is no WiFi connectivity going on.

That is what I assume as well, and I don't know that I really want to have my PS3 on all the time to truly take advantage of it. However, the Wii can access the internet even when it isn't on (it will tell you if you have a message or if there is an update even if the power is off). So it's possible that the PS3 could be turned on and off via the Internet.

PDZ < Resistance
PGR = nothing special
COD2 = available on all consoles.

i like kameo it wasn't too bad.

all launch titles suck ass for all systems. =P (i had a 360 on launch day)

ALSO WHAT WALMARTS ARE YOU PEOPLE GOING TO WITH STACKS OF PS3'!? i dont see any at my local BB/Target/Walmart and i'm in a very high demo/pop location

Oh sweet science, Heavenly Sword will be out early march. If it gets a 9.5 or over, I think I will go and get a PS3 with that and Motorstorm.

Knowing my luck, it will blow ass, but i'm hoping. I really want to get into the next gen now.

I'll admit that I don't know a lot about Heavenly Sword, but I don't see a game that looks like a button masher scoring that high, even if it is a great example of the genre.

The Wii is always 'on' (if you set the Wii Connect 24 to do so). The PS3 was not designed to do that. Maybe a firmware update will? A new one is LONG overdue at this point.

From what i've read, it's like God of War with a female lead character. If God of War can get close to a mid 90 (i used gamerankings) then it should hopefully be a shoe in. Besides, there aren't that many quality games for it to go up against on the PS3...

I'm so negative... but I just want one hehe

I have no idea what Heavenly Sword is about. Seriously. Anyone care to shed some light besides the above poster (Never played God of War)

Your missing the point of my post. The games listed there at launch are no where as strong as the games that are out now or soon to be released after a year plus. Was just an way of highlighting the fact that a majority of the superior titles don't come at launch time.

This thread is pretty good. Only like one or two people maybe on the negative side, which is a big improvement! :) I'm all for Sony bashing, or any other company thrashing, but as long as it is fair and back up with facts and not meaningless opinions. Most of us seem to be in a good "wait and see" stance instead of jumping off the deep end with faulty info. :applause:

I meant that it would suck to have just bought a PS3 if you were also a 360 owner, as there are not too many additional games that are PS3 exclusive.

Firstly, what does Sony have to do with the fact that the ports don't have any additional content?

I bought it as a gaming system and am pretty happy. A shoddy line up was expected for launch. I bought the system knowing full well that there wouldn't be much to offer for a while. The number of ports doesn't affect me since don't own a 360.

Also, I thought we went over this. No one is only going to buy Resistance and the 360 ports. The console will be pumping out games for the next 4-5 years. Remember that "wasted" $500/$600? It paid for the 4-5 years of gaming.

Yea, I am really eager to see what the PS3 will offer a year from now. I look at the 360 launch titles and compare them to GoW and am truly amazed at the improvement over just a year. If the PS3 can give me something like Resistance at this point, I think next year will be just fine.

I don't get it either.

He's bashing Blu-ray as he's supremely loyal to HD-DVD for some very fanboyish reasons (HD-DVD was supposed to be the next step, not stinky Blu-Ray, waaaaah!).
And yet he bought a PS3 for the sole reason of playing Blu-Ray flicks.

I'm sorry if the joke was over my head or something, I usually catch these things.

Yea. It's alright that he thinks that the PS3 has few games and that blu-ray should lose the format war, but to then turn around and invest $600 in both right after saying all that? A bit strange. I know if I had this many complaints about a product, I sure as hell wouldn't get my cheapass to drop $600 on it.

EDIT: OP, that list of games you have there is kinda small. I checked IGN, and it looks like they just recently updated theirs

Not sure if this one is completely accurate though.

Added a few links. The arcade game info is cool. "Between $10 and $1 range."

Oh and Yeh, I know that list was small but those were the dates released and confirmed for that day.

Well, at least there is a detailed "roadmap" of games. Too bad most are ports, or craptacular "upgrades." I mean, come on, Godfather: The Don's Edition?!?!! WTF is that about? Gotta love EA's "No more sequels" stance...

The only game that I'm even remotely interested in is GRAW2 but even then, I'm concerned that the title will be rushed (it's only been 1 year since GRAW hit the shelves) and therefore the quality of the game will suffer. Not to mention I already have a 360 to play GRAW2 on.
Eh. The wireless sounds cool...but what would you want to view?
would be nice to be able to access music, I'd load my machine up with movies, and call on them. at least you don't have to worry about formatting them into mpeg 4...

Might want to update the OP about Sony's Emmy win--apparently, it has nothing to do with the SIXAXIS whatsoever--only the dualshock, and it shared the award with Nintendo for it's D-pad.
