CES: Sony Press Event Wrap-Up *updated*
I don't get it either.

He's bashing Blu-ray as he's supremely loyal to HD-DVD for some very fanboyish reasons (HD-DVD was supposed to be the next step, not stinky Blu-Ray, waaaaah!).
And yet he bought a PS3 for the sole reason of playing Blu-Ray flicks.

I'm sorry if the joke was over my head or something, I usually catch these things.
The format war is not ending anytime soon. I will no longer buy SD DVDs. You think I am going to miss out on Fox, Disney, and LionsGate titles because of this? Hell no. I bought Blu-Ray to see those studios movies in HD, and thats why I got a BR player.

Oh ok, thanks for the sales then.

Well, whichever format wins will be receiving all those movies in the end, anyway. You do realize that you are supporting the very format and console you wish to fail, don't you?

I really don't see the point in owning both movie formats. We all know one will succeed making the other obsolete. The remaining format will acquire all the movies from the "losing" camp. You will most likely have to hang on to that obsolete player, or re-buy the movies anyway in the successful format.

Shhh!
Don't bother him, see that PSN network ID he has?
He's downloading BD trailers from the Playstation store right now.

hey, i just realized we are really close to each other. And I didn't realize there is a spot to put my PSN. I think ill go add it now.

Why exactly would you have to re-buy the films just because you own them for the "obsolete" format? Do they suddenly disintigrate when one is determined the winner by message board dwellers?

And why is everyone hating on gizmo for buying a PS3? If he has the money then more power to him. Fanboys piss me off.

Yea, you're right, you don't HAVE TO. I said that he will either have to hang on to the obsolete player, OR rebuy the movies on the winning format. It's up to him really. I think, the smartest thing to do would be to get rid of that player and all of the movies as fast as you can and use that money to rebuy the movies in the "winning" format. Again, that is just me. He may think otherwise. I personally don't see the point of having an expensive piece of hardware laying around that will only play a small portion of my movie collection. Then again, by the time the war is decided, both formats will have a fairly large selection and players will be cheaper. So selling the player won't get you too much, and re-buying would be costly depending on how many movies you bought. This is why format wars suck.

Also, I notice that you added "determined by message board dwellers". I think the message board dwellers will in fact declare a winner far before the general public does, but I do think that there will eventually be a winner. I can't see the two coexisting. And, at the moment, it looks as if blu-ray will be the winner, but it is still a bit early to tell.

I apologize. What you read was somewhat out of context. Basically, gizmo spends most of his time on this board saying that the PS3 has no good games for it, and that HD-DVD should win the format war. That is all fine and dandy, but I am just poking fun at the fact that after saying all of that, he goes around and supports the PS3 and Blu-ray. Two things he obviously despises. Not exactly the smartest thing to do for someone who loathes to two so much.

I understand. You are one of the few people on boards that can explain themselves it seems.

In terms of PS3, I happen to own one and I can't help but feel a tad disappointed. I did however realize that I was disappointed with my 360 for like 6 months as well so I don't really worry about it. Growing pains are a bitch though =/

That's a natural feeling towards a new system. I think I have felt that way about all my systems since the PS1 (Probably would've felt the same way about consoles before that, but I was a bit young in the SNES days and was easily entertained).

I'm a sucker for new technology. I originally didn't intend on buying the PS3 until Fall 07 (when MGS4 supposedly comes out), but I bought into the hype and got one. I don't regret it at all. So far, I am having fun with it, although I can't really see too many games I want until Fall 07. I am hoping one of these games will be worth it: Lair, WarHawk, or Heavenly Sword, since they come out in Spring. If not, i'll be waiting a while for the killer apps. I expected this though. I remember not having much for my PS2 at first, but it has turned into one of my all time favorite consoles. The 360 has come quite a ways too. Initially, I didn't think it had much going for it, aside from the amazing graphics. Now it has some great games under its belt (some of which I plan to buy on the PS3. Namely: Oblivion, Ninja Gaiden: Sigma, Splinter Cell) and GoW looks insanely good graphically.

You're a smart guy. Proud you're a Texan like me.

I feel the exact same way, I too wasn't even planning on having my own PS3 until much later this year, but man, I just couldn't resist.
I love tinkering with brand-new technology.
I feel like I have my launch PSP again, people discovering how to create bootable files, tricks, hacks.
Watching it grow better and better with each firmware revision.

It's a good machine. Better games will come. And if you're into it, BD movies are the best.

Go Texans? :whistle2:?

I figured the PS3 wouldn't drop in price by the time MGS4 came out, so I wouldn't be saving any money by waiting. If it does drop by then, it probably won't be enough to justify a wait for me. I am completely happy with my purchase. Although, like I said, I'm sure the feeling will fade very soon. So far, only have NBA and Resistance keeping me busy. Both are pretty fun, nothing amazing, but they won't last that long.

And I agree about watching the PS3 grow. I am really eager to see what people will be able to do with Linux on the PS3. Also, just watching the future games evolve from early tech demos, into full fledged games is pretty impressive. I have to say, Resistance didn't interest me one bit when it was first revealed at E3 05. Then, as launch neared, we started seeing more and more about the game, and it actually turned into something that was worth the purchase for me.

Haven't picked up any BR movies yet. I may just get one for the sake of experience it. As of now, none of the movies warrant the $25 for me, but I think ill at least pick up one sometime soon.

Even if HD-DVD failed, why would I rebuy my movies on Blu-Ray? They will still work...right? Do they self-destruct or something? Hell, if a format fails that means cheaper prices! Bring it on!

When did this magic moment happen? 4 days ago? Last month BR had horrible sales and could barley sell a player. Now after the CES announcement and the PS3 people seem to think BR will not automatically win the war. I don't see this happening anytime soon, if ever. Like I said, HD had its time in the sun, now its BRs time. The tides turned REALLY fast for BR...it may be the same for HD.

Sorry, TO ME, PS3 has NO good games. Period. Full Auto 2 is acceptable, but I would NEVER buy a system for it. I have no intentions of playing crap like Genji, or boring ass racing games. TO ME, the system BLOWS in terms of games. I'm not alone in this either. Again, I could careless about supporting Sony. I want HD movies, and HD-DVD does not have them all. I do not buy any more SD DVDs unless there is no chance of them ever coming out on HD/BR. I really don't feel like 'boycotting' studios not supporting HD-DVD, so I got a BR.

Dude, Google checkout is god. I can't believe how many HD/BRs I got for less them $15 shipped. I can't even buy the SD DVD version for that price!

Here is a picture of my HD/BR collection as of last week. That does not include several more HD/BRs I have purchases as well as the 5-8 still in the mail.

Of course you think this. You already have a 360, and most of the PS3's games are already available on the 360. Just give it a few months and we'll start to see some better exclusives.

He owns a PS3 as well actually...

I had a plan... I really did. I was going to wait a year to get my PS3 like I did with my 360... But target had a few 60's and 20's for sale last night, and I decided to get a 20. :) I really am not all that interested in wi-fi, and with a removable hard drive, I can get a bigger one later. As for the card reader components (and silver badging)... it was not necessary for me.

I bought Untold Legends, since I didn't want (ANOTHER) fps-esque game, since I have Gears for my 360. It's REALLY fun, if you like Diablo-style action RPGs.

I was (and remain) fairly skeptical about the movie formats (now that I have both types, I will buy what movies I want in HD/Blu Ray and be done with it... regardless of which format wins), but as for games, the list of titles look intriguing to me.

2007 will be a good year for both consoles (And when the Wii colors come out... who knows what I'll do then?)

Needless to say, I've seen Sony muff things up in the last few years, but the PS3 looks to have more potential than I originally gave it credit for.

Perhaps the only downside to the whole purchase is the complete and utter crapfest that is the Blu-Ray edition of Talledega Nights. :D

Yes, thank you for rubbing it in my face that I missed that deal. Nice collection by the way.

That's completely fine if you don't like PS3 games. I'm not saying you should. Just found it odd that you buy the PS3 after all the blu-ray and PS3 hating you do. But, I guess if you really want HD-DVD movies, it isn't worth it to be without a good portion of them, or to wait until one format is decided, as that would take years anyway.

The deal is still going on! Its $10 off $10 at various websites. Just register a new e-mail each time. I must have 10 packages in route to my house.
