In about 3 weeks, i'll be moving from cold and snowy southern NY to colder and snowier northern NY and i'm looking to buy an enitrely new furniture set. Anyone know where I can get some slightly cheap but stylish bookcases, tv stands, end tables, chairs, etc?

I hear Ikea has some pretty cool stuff, but I have no clue what they charge for shipping.

Anyway, if you know of a cheap ass place, let me know.
 
Levin's Furniture.. it's not exactly cheap.. but they have plans where you can do 2 yrs, no interest, no payments till 2008... That is what I did. Then you pay it off at your leisure...
 
I recommend getting a huge pile of pillows and hanging some silk curtains. Get a hookah and some hanging censers. If you have money left over and a significant other who doesn't mind, get some attractive slaves to hang around and tend to you also. The Sultan lifestyle is due for a comeback, I say.
 
Ikea is your best bet if it has to be new stuff. I'm not sure on their shipping charges either. Too bad you don't have one near you.

Actually, I mentioned it in the starting post. I like their stuff, I just don't want them charging me out the ass for shipping. The closest one to me is an hour or so away...maybe i'll make a trip.
 
Craiglist, people are trying to get rid of furniture all the time. you can get stuff for free or really cheap and it's good stuff too.
 
just get the basics you need from someplace like ikea and then keep an eye on the local paper. Women have this tendancy to get new furniture every 3 yrs or so so you can usually get some decent stuff used that's hardly been used.
 
My brother had to buy some furniture for his home and he looked in the trading post and found a nice love seat and couch set for 110 bucks and they just gave him some tables and lamps. It was in an office about 45 minutes from where we live so I took the ride with him and we threw it in the truck and came back with it. He still has it in his new apartment too. Don't be afraid to buy used stuff, especially furniture since it's so expensive new. You can get alot of good stuff at like The Salvation Army and Goodwill too. The ones down here are really clean and neat.
 
craigslist , my sister is one of those people that gave away a lot of nearly new furniture for extremely low prices when she had to move

Anyway, if you know of a cheap ass place, let me know.[/quote] shipping costs a lot from ikea. you might wanna try target for bookcases... lol maybe even walmart-i've had to furnish my apt w.o my girl's help, i think i did a pretty good job.
 
I am full advocate for Ikea, but it really is in your best interests to go to one in person, if that is possible.

Otherwise, general places like garage sales, pawn shops, thrift stores, etc. College students will sell shit around December/May/August coinciding with their graduations.

Target is.....not good. It looks ok, but it doesn't fit well, and normally it'll break or something 6 months later. I don't really suggest them.

You can try places like Ross/Stein Mart/TJ Maxx if those are around you.

But I'd still vote for Ikea.
 
Target.. it depends on what you buy.. I've bought some good shelving units there.. but I hear their seats and tables aren't great quality...
 
Yeah I dunno, when I look at Target and Walmart stuff...it's all made out of plywood, which is a slight step up from cardboard.

What about Big Lots?
 
OP, how much are you looking to spend and what are you looking for quality wise? I'm in your exact same situation, but I'm looking for higher quality things than I have now (particle board ftw).

I'm finding some nice furniture at Havertys.
 
Go to a local furniture store, they will always have lots of stuff on sale, clearance, scratch and dent etc. My parents just got a $1,500 oak table (with chairs) for $650 because of a scratch on top of it. The scratch disappeared after it was stained. Check out the local places, and ask where the clearance/ scratch and dent aisle, trust me the love selling there "unsaleable."

I really don't know how much i'm looking to spend because i've never had to buy furniture before. I'm mostly looking for an LCD TV media center, a couch, some end tables, maybe a coffee table, a small kitchen table with chairs...that sort of stuff.

Well, I don't exactly plan on buying it all at once. But...lets say for starters...$400.

You should try craigslist, walmart, target, or yard sales/goodwill then.

Well like I said, that just based on what I have on me at the moment. I know that wont buy everything, but I could at least get an entermaint stand, a small kitchen table and some chairs for that.

Your best bet is probably walmart then. I bought a kitchen table from them for $99 a few years ago. It's held up relatively well.

My audio rack and my coffee table. Both are your typical particle board stuff. I've had no problems with them (yet), but I'm looking to upgrade.
