Cheap online subscriptions?

Hi, I'm thinking about playing online (tried it once with Halo 3, but didn't have time afterward) because of winter holidays coming up, and it's always more entertaining to play with others . I was wondering where you online gamers buy your subscriptions? Is the 12 month deal the best bang for my buck? Do any online companies sell these subscriptions cheaper than retail?
