cheapass high speed internet?

Would the Net Zero High Speed for 14.95 qualify as broadband? I have never looked into what it actually is.

I think Net Zero High Speed is exactly what Earthlink has with Earthlink Accelerator. It's when 56K speed is increased slightly using accelerator sofware tools. It's not exactly broadband like cable or DSL.

i think i read somewhere that its just regular 56k, but they have some sorta "technology" that compresses images. so while internet pages load faster, nothing is really faster, text/pictures/such is just smaller.

I don't think it would. It says that it does not increase the transfer of video or sound files which leads me to believe that it is not truly high speed. It may just have some sort of process that speeds up the way pages load but thats it.

If you have Bell south if you pay for the full package its only like 15 bucks for DSL lite(don't know if it will allow you to pay extra for full DSL)

one time I looked into Bellsouth's DSL lite, as I have Bellsouth's regular DSL package. Lite is about 1/5 the speed of regualr DSL for like 2/3 the price (atleast when I looked at it).

Cable's the way to go until everyone on your block has it. Shared bandwidth gets smaller as more people use it. Then DSL will start looking much better.

if you have verizon, its only 30 a month w/ free msn and modem. or for around 100 a month, with verizon you can get everything, unlimite dsl w/ msn, unlimited long distance, local, caller id, call waiting, etc, etc.

That's what everyone says but I've had it for the past 3 or 4 years and I live dead in the heart of the city, still rarely dropping below 400kps download.

Can someone explain what he hell dsl lite actually is?

How much slower is it than regular dsl if at all?

If customers purchase local or long distance telephone services from BellSouth, they get the "DSL Lite" for $35 a month. Otherwise, the cost is $39.95 for Internet-only subscribers.

BellSouth is calling its re-branded Internet service "FastAccess DSL Lite," and claims it offers download rates of 256 Kbps (kilobits per second) and upload speeds of 128 Kbps.

While the new "DSL Lite" offers Web surfing speeds of close to five times faster than dial-up Internet service, it also is a fraction of the download and upload rates for its current DSL offerings of 1.5 Mbps (megabits per second) downstream and 256 Kbps for uploading.

Basically your better off just spending a little more money and geting alot better speeds.

I have Cable too...for downloading it is great, but my provider caps my uploads...sucks if I want to host any games online.

i have SBC dsl and it is $30 a month.

i know someone that has Wide Open West and i think it costs him about $70 a month for cable (with HBO) and cable internet, which is pretty decent.

so SBC Yahoo would work with broadband games? I heard thats a full yr subcription for 30 bucks a month though other wise you can't cancel anytime?

it should work, however i haven't tried it. and this is why: after signing up, they sent me a USB dsl modem (which they may do with you as well), which poses a problem for connecting to the very non-USB friendly network adapter for the ps2. i haven't actually tried to figure out how to hook it up, since i have enough single player games that i don't need to go online playing against anyone else right now. that being said, i would still like do to so soon.

as far as the problems with cancellation, i have no idea. i've had it for over a year, and it's more reliable now than it was when i first got it, so i haven't really had any urges to cancel it.

I just got earthlink powered by comcast and ultimately the prices after all the deals and instalationand modem (which paying for is almost impossible to get around) are calculated it at about $50. The deal was $19.95 for the first 3 months and about 47 from then on plus the modem $50 and the instalation $50

Here's the deal with those "high speed" 56k services like Net Zero High Speed and Earthlink Accelerator. All that they do is prefetch pages and cache the files. They do not actually increase your bandwidth. You can get those same exact features in a modern web browser like Mozilla. It's a ripoff. In fact, watch the Net Zero commercials, you'll actually see a disclaimer in small print saying something around the lines of "does not increase transfer speed." I haven't actually paid attention to the Earthlink commercials, so I can't say for sure if they give the disclaimer as well. Regardless, don't waste your money on those services.

If you plan on actually hosting games, I'd go with a DSL package that offers a higher upload rate. You really don't need that much of a download rate, as long as you're floating around one megabyte you'll be good to go. Cable companies normally cap upstream bandwidth at 128k or 256k. Because you will be on a shared line with cable (and some DSL packages), they aren't very friendly with people using a lot of bandwidth, either.

Finally, you're probably not going to find a great broadband package very cheap. It might be best to try to make cuts elsewhere if you're unable to afford a good package.

i have adelphia and it's hella fast. if you already subscribe to their digital cable, you can get the braodband package for 20 bucks more a month. great deal!

Damnit! Beat me to the punch!

Nor is it useful for games. You WILL NOT see any speed enhancements using this.

I'd suggest going to www.broadbandreports.com and seeing what's available in your area.

That said...the best advice I can offer is to buy your own modem, especially if you won't be switching providers anytime soon. Equipment rental fees WILL add up; it's better in the long run to just buy the thing. You might even get lucky - when we signed up for Comcast, they gave my family a rebate form that made our modem completely free.

i dunno, i had sbc yahoo and i had horrible download speeds.... 20 kb/s im now with earthlink, the speeds are good but occasions disconnects when you need to restart your modem.
