Cheapass Wi-Fi Router (for PSP, DS, XBX, PC, PS2, GC, REV)

AnthonyRoundtree

CAGiversary!
PSP is coming.
You need a router to play wireless with your buds in the room...
and you need internet connection to that router to play across the globe.

DS is online soon....
Sure is gonna be cool trading NES/SNES?/DualScreenedG&W? games with you fellow CAGers across the country...

Revolution is Wi-Fi out of the box....

SO.
If you're like me...
And have had NO REASON to buy a Wi-Fi Router till now....

Chances are... you're deal hunting too for something you can use on all these.

Also.. this router's gotta have the standard 4 physical ports...
Xbox, PS2, PC, and... *sigh* Gamecube.

Anyone care to help?
What do I need.... and....
How cheap can i get it for?

hmmm....
not looking for the modem...
(though that is cheap)

just a router.
service is already wired to my building.

Linksys has been berry berry good to me. I'm currently using the Linksys Wireless G 802.11g wireless router that already comes with it's Wireless access booster.

Um, if you're in the NYC area, I guess hope for some online retailer to have a sale. I purchased this stuff at a local Frys. I got this current stuff this past summer so it should be getting a little cheaper.

I don't know if that helped. Basically if you get the one Linksys Wireless G Broadband router you hook that up to your connection and you're good to go. (Assuming your devices are Wi-Fi out of the box)

I'm not big on Dlink routers they always seem to give me problems, but I've got a Belkin wireless and it's worked flawlessly since I bought it.

any cheapass 4 port belkin wirelesses?

The only reason you would need anything faster that 802.11b is if you are going to be sharing files. Your internet is only so fast. 5mb/s TOPS. I have started to see some $5-$10 after rebate 802.11b routers on newegg and other places.

I've seen numerous Free after rebate wireless routers in national ad's such as Compusa, just look through the ads.

What's the difference between 802.11b and 802.11g?

My setup currently consists of....

T3 wired to the building.

Out of the wall... into my netgear Hub.
Tha leaves room to directly hook in my
1)PC
2)Xbox
3)PS2

I need something that will be accept my T3 connection out of the wall and split it to...

1)PC
2)Xbox
3)PS2
4)GC

and 5) being whatever wi-fi devices I have... (PSP, Laptop, DS, Rev.. whatever)

What can I get now at a decent price that will accommodate my setup needs?

For increasing broadband speeds, a wireless b is fine now but will not be in the next year or two. Even though I read here that someone has a Belkin router and they have no problems with it...they are pretty terrible routers overall. D-links are decent but their throughput is questionable. I would recommend the following brands based on what me and my collegues at work have used (were all computer geeks):

1) Netgear - strongest reliable routers that I have seen. There are some people that have several issues with these routers (no one that I have known) but I usually find that that is usually a user error (these routers are easy to setup but some out of the box configuration may be needed depending on factors like location, ISP, etc.

2)D-Link - read above. Decent routers with average to below average performance.

3)Linksys - does not offer the strongest security (their getting better) but their throughput performance is from average to above average.

If you can afford around $50, then I recommend a G or Super G router. If you want to go the free or next to nothing route and don't care about having to buy another router down the line, then B it is (and that would be sufficent to support the DS and PSP wifi (since they are B).

Now, is this a direct T3 to your room? If so there really is no *Cheap* way around that, you'd have to go CISCO. Now if this is a T3 that is routed to your room then might I suggest:

The Parker Vision WR1500 which can give you a one-mile line of sight signal, about $100.
or...
Netgear PRE-N WGM124NA, about $120

now if you're dirt poor CompUSA has a Negear Wireless Router for $15 with shippig on sale this week:
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=298420&pfp=BROWSE
Normally $60 before shipping, so not a bad deal even with a $40 mail in rebate.

Pre-N is what is hot now, but all I can say is you get what you pay for with routers; usually the cheaper ones have very poor signal strength.

i just got my belkin iress g from compusa $7 AR..i works well..took less than 15 mins to setup...have my xbox, pc, and myi8600c laptop for it...works well so far...usually have an excellent connection at 54kpbs, but sometimes goes lower when i go downstairs t another part of the house

I just got one of these yesterday along with the pci wireless adapter. I got it all set up and it looks like someone else in my building has a wireless connection also, theirs has no security so i connected to it and i'm gonna keep the wireless router anyway cause my connection is better than theirs!

Router was on sale, had a $10 MIR AND i had a 12% discount coupon so after rebate it was

Just so you know, that's not true. You have a PSP, your friend has one nearby, you can play multi.

Stay away from D-link. I've had the DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G wireless router for about 6 months now and it's a piece of crap. I would go with netgear or linksys if I had to make the choice again.

any opinions on belkin wireless g? im using a security enabled WPA password protected...so far its worked well, just paranoid if its secure enough...someone in my area has an open wireless connection on their netgear

alright guys im a computer noob, what the hell is a wireless router? if my ps2 is a room away from my router, it can still go online? Is it wireless between router and phoneplug, or wireless between router and machine?
