cheapest place for a Sega Genesis

Blockbusters Gamerush has them for $20 when in-stock...any version.

as far as $... i have no clue. The original had a few extra sitches and the headphone jack..but the others were nice and small...nope, no clue

$30s about right. Kinda high, but average. Sometimes EB has wacky sales like $15 a system though. There is no real value difference between the older and newer models. I personally would want a newer model as they are smaller and fit in the little tray that comes with the sega cd if you are hooking up a sega cd unit to it, but that's me. I would look on ebay first as you can probably find a system for around $30 with the original box and a few games included.

alright thanks. i didn't know the original didn't work with Sega CD. what's a good price for Sega CD anyway? this local game place that has tons of Genesises. has Sega CDs for $60.

Also, Genesis 3 does not work with certain games (I think it might just be games with that enhanced graphics chip in them). Like Virtua Racing will not work on a Genesis 3 system. This is because the Genesis 3 was a system re-released my Majesco and they didn't include all the parts the Genesis 1 and 2 had.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $20 for a Genesis w/controllers and hookups. If you can get one for $10-15, don't pass the offer up.

I don't know an exact place to find one for cheap. Like all older systems, your best bet is at pawn shops, flea markets, and thrift stores. If your Gamestop is one of those stores selling off their remaining NES, SNES, and Genesis stuff, you might be lucky enough to find one there, but I assume most are gone by now.

Good luck! I'm buying a Genesis myself shortly.

The older versions will work fine with the sega cd, it's just they don't fit into the tray that comes with the sega cd. $60 a decent price for it if it has the original box, if not then I'd say around $40 or so, the only place I've ever seen them for sale around here is on ebay.

I saw one in each of the Game Crazy's near me for $19.99 each. That still seems high. I agree with the eBay approach. Look up past package deals for the system to see what they are going for. Then keep your eye out for another similar deal. They come up all the time.

I picked one up for $9.99 back in November at EB.. Model 1, with the head phone jacks and everything.

Wow you guys don't seem to know very much about the Genesis.

Their are 2 different model Sega Cd's. a Model 1 (has a sliding disc tray) which is meant for the Model 1 Genesis, and a Model 2 Sega Cd meant for the Model 2 Genesis. But either Genesis model will work with either Sega CD model.

The Model 3 Genesis will NOT work with either of the Sega CD models or the 32x.

The Master System Converter Base is designed for the model 1, it will work with the model 2 but only if you saw off the back end of the converter, and it will NOT work with the Model 3.

Just get a model 1 Genesis.

Just bought one. Model 2, for $15. I picked the model 2 because that's the model my brother owned back in the day.

Now here's a little Sega Genesis 101 on the models.

Here's what each model looks like (with apologies to you 56k users):

Model 1

Model 2, a little slimmer than model 1. No headphone jack, though.

Here's Model 3, a lot smaller than models 1 and 2. It also has a wider cart slot for playing imports.

And for those who have never seen it and wonder how the 32X and Sega CD connected to the Genesis, here's a model 2 with those hooked up. The Sega CD is a model 2.

And here's a Model 1 connected to the model 1 Sega CD (with the sliding disc tray).

FYI, models 1 and 2 are very common. I've heard the hookups are a little harder to find than the consoles themselves, so if you see a loose one at Goodwill or something, ask if they have the hookups behind the counter or something because if you buy it without hookups, you might have some trouble getting them. Model 3 is harder to find than the others, but I'm not sure if it's scarce or not. It's also a little more expensive than the other two, at least at B&M game stores. Also, I've noticed some places charge less for a model 1 than model 2, while some charge the same. But with eBay, you never know.

I'd go with Model 1 or 2, both are pretty reliable. If you want a headphone jack, model 1 is for you. If you don't have much space, model 2 takes up less space than model 1. Model 3 has a size advantage, but with the drawbacks JibbaJabba and YoshiFan1 stated, I wouldn't go with it. And like I said before, if you can get one for $10-15, don't pass it up.

And yes, I'm a nerd.

seems like i would take #1 since i want the headphone jack, don't care much about space, and want to play ALL the genesis games possible, unlike the 3rd one as someone stated

A model 2 is your best bet. Maybe it's just my model 1 genesis (that has High Definition Graphics written in Red) but it has compatibility problems with a lot of games. They'll load up just fine, but some wacky crap happens.

The two games that come to mind (since they were the last ones I played) are Justice Leauge and Seperation Anxiety. In JL you can't move down at the menu but otherwise everything else is fine.

In Seperation Anxiety, it won't let you choose a 1p game.
