Basically what the title implies since I'm going to need an external one soon. Also, maybe someone could point me in the direction of some cheap DVD-Rs while were at it.
Your best bet is usually to get an external USB 2.0 or FireWire box and buy an internal DVD burner. Boxes usually run about $25, and internal burner deals get below $50. I usually don't see external burners under $100. Installation into the external box involves a few screws, and clicking the power and data cables into the back of the internal drive. An external box is also versatile if you want to install somthing else inside. I have a box with a hard drive in it, and it works very well.
As far as specific deals, try NewEgg.com for boxes and burners. Their prices might not be the absolute lowest, but they're a great place to start looking. I got my external box from DealSonic.com about a year ago, but deals there vary.

That deal in the next post is looking pretty good...[/QUOTE]
Hmm... I was thinking of going that route of getting an external enclosure and then buyingan internal DVD burner since that seems to be the cheapest way to go. Only thing is I don't have a lot of time at the moment to build one, so how long should/would they take to build.
Yeah, better off with the enclosure. Its not difficult to put a drive in one.
As for the drive, I recommend either the NEC ND-3520A, or the Pioneer DVR-109, both are under $50 from Newegg, and are two of the best burners on the market.
Yeah, installation takes about 10 minutes; less after you've done it once. The hardest part with mine was clicking the snaptite-ish sides on to complete the box. It was one of those things where you have to hold 2 things in place while you click something else in and you never seem to have enough hands for the job. My box is different from the NewEgg one, though.
In short, don't even consider assembly time in your decision. It's absurdly quick.
I've seen those external hard drive enclosure in stores. Will they work with a DVD/CD drive, too? Or do I have to find one that specifically says it's for optical drives?

You'll need one that can fit a 5 1/4 inch drive. There are different sizes for different types of drives.
