I have a wired network in my house, and just want one more piece to add to it. A router that will work with psp.

I could care less if it works with anything else, i just need the cheapest one.

BTW: Can I plug a wireless router into a wired router ?

No, you cant plug a wireless router into a wired one...but...most wireless ones have ports for wires anyway.

See if you can nab the Microsoft branded one, they stopped making them a while back and most retailers have since been clearing them out. I got mine for 50 bucks, which is a steal, and it works great.

Circuit City has a decent wireless router for sale that's $10 after $60 mail-in rebate. Has several wired ports on it too.

be careful, the router has to be able to work in 802.11b mode. While this may sound like a given, I have a b/g router. However, it will only work in mixed mode (broadcasting both a b and g signal) and g-only. Unfortunately, the psp will not detect a mixed signal. Therefore, you need a router that can be set to b-only. I am now having to buy a new router to use with my PSP. I am going to look for an old B only router since it should be cheaper.

I was under the impression that it was the routers that were at fault. Remember, an 802.11B-only device doesn't KNOW about mixed mode. It is the responsibility of 802.11G devices to detect and support 802.11B since they have the advantage.

Most 802.11G devices have a control to set them to G mode only. This provides better bandwidth where large numbers of users are involved since they are dividing a larger pie. It also avoids the high latency added by mixed mode negotiating. If your 802.11G router won't properly negotiate with a PSP it is either setup incorrectly or is a lousy product that should be replaced at the first opportunity.

On the OP's question about adding to an existing router, why bother? Dedicated access points are now much higher in price than combined router/APs. The combo devices are able to attach more functions to a single control processor, require only one power supply, less physical complexity, etc.

Unless you have something really special in your existing router you shold just figure on replacing it entirely with a combo unit. If you are in Fry's territory that is generally the best bet for a low price without a rebate involved. Their Airlink brand units have been low as $20 recently.

Say what? My router does do G only. Thats not the problem, it doesn't do B only, and mixed mode doesn't work with the psp. Thats why I was saying one should be sure that they either buy a router that is 802.11b or can at least be set to b only.

Yes, you can plug a wireless router into a wired router. The wired router must have an uplink port, or you must use a crossover cable. This really isn't the best solution for your problem, though. Instead of having 2 routers in your network, you can just buy a wireless access point to connect to your wired router.

What is the brand and model of this router you have? It had better not carry the WiFi logo or that company could find themselves facing litigation for producing a product that doesn't meet the requirements of the standard.

To get WiFI approval the device MUST support interoperabilty with 802.11b devices. Such support may be optionally locked out in software to improve performance but it MUST be available or the product is not an official WiFi product.

Mixed mode should not be an issue. As I sadi above, this is purely the router's function. 802.11b device don't know about mixed mode and do not need to. It is the responsibility of the G device to perform that function.

For the record, my mixed mode router is working just fine with my PSP.

If the manual is available as a PDF on the Gateway site I could take a look.

A lot of G routers being sold primarily as bundle items with laptops are coming set to G-only mode to reduce the time for initial connection. This is fine for the laptop concerned but can be very frustrating when a friend brings their older or lower spec equipment over and cannot connect for any apparent reason.

I have switched it to mixed mode. The PSP still says wlan switch not on.

Without the manual or actual hardware at hand there isn't much I can suggest. You might also check for updates to the firmware. It' possible they had bugs in their mixed mode functionality.

It's possible Sony did something seriously wrong in their implementation but that would be surprising at this late date and considering their experience in wireless PDAs. We may see a PSP firmware update for this issue but the routers are a more likely suspect since some work and others don't.

](*,)

You have to flip the wireless switch on your PSP to the "ON" position. It's the switch by the analog nub.

Do yourself a favor and just sell your PSP.

F.U., and thanks. I feel kinda stupid, but brains have never been a requirement to own cool stuff, just money.

I just use a wireless access point from Linksys, WAP54G, connected to my wired router. My PSP works fine with it on mixed mode, at least with checking for a network update and using the web browser through Wipeout.
