WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Vice President Dick Cheney raised eyebrows on Friday for wearing an olive-drab parka, hiking boots and knit ski cap to represent the United States at a solemn ceremony remembering the liberation of Auschwitz.

Other leaders at the event in Poland on Thursday marking the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, wore dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots.

"The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower," Robin Givhan, The Washington Post's fashion writer, wrote in the newspaper's Friday editions.

Between the somber, dark-coated leaders at the outdoor ceremony sat Cheney, resplendent in a green parka embroidered with his name and featuring a fur-trimmed hood, the laced brown boots and a knit ski cap reading "Staff 2001."

"And, indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults," Givhan wrote.

Britain's Daily Mail and Daily Telegraph newspapers also both noted that Cheney had opted for casual attire.

The Post's Givhan said Cheney might have been hoping to avoid the cold weather in Oswiecim, but noted he had worn a dark overcoat and no hat at all at another recent winter occasion -- his own swearing-in ceremony on Inauguration Day on Jan. 20 in snow-dusted Washington.

"The vice president might have been warm in his parka, ski cap and hiking boots," Givhan said. "But they had the unfortunate effect of suggesting he was more concerned with his own comfort than the reason for braving the cold at all."

Cheney's staff had no comment on the story.

This guy is so close to the grave that pretty soon he's going to have to start wearing the darth vader helmet everywhere.

Cheney: I find your lack of christian faith disturbing

*can't breathe*

LOL! It looks like Dick Cheney needs a makeover from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy".
Hey the man likes to stay warm. But hell that is funny.
Funny yes.

He will stay nice and warm when he is in hell too. :)

Here's my news story...

"Reuter's reporter comes back with a boring and fruitless report about what one guy was wearing at a solemn ceremony rembering the liberation of Auschiwitz. Apparently he found himself more concerned with writing a pointless story about Dick Cheney's wardrobe than reporting the actual events of the ceremony and a vice presidential international visit."

Reporters like that are idiots and need to actually find some real news. Seriously there's got to be more important things going on there than what Dick Cheney is wearing.

I don't think anyone is saying this is an impeachable offense (unlike the other 99% of the things Cheney & Bush do), but he does look really out of place in that photo. I can't recall ever seeing a US President or VP dressing down that much for an official function.

I just thought it was funny.

Yes, why doesn't he just ask his daughter for fashion advice. It's not like she's going to be busy planning her wedding anytime soon.

Who do you think suggested the parka and hiking boots?

Duo- the Fashion reporter in the Washington post commented on the attaire. The occasion was heavily reported by all media with the appropriate respect. Besides anyone who sees the picture can clearly see how unprofessional Cheney looks and how it should be commented on.

but don't bother, I know, the media is TEH BAD!!

Lesbains don't know anything with fasion, just look at "Queer Eye for the Straight GIRL!" I'm sure she told him to wear some tight pink shirt and a purple coat that is 20 times bigger than the one he did wear.

Ayboy know what the weather was at the time?

Say what you will, but this has to do with perception.
I am infinately more comfortable in jeans in a T-Shirt than I am in a suit. However, I wouldn't wear jeans and a T-Shirt to a job interview.

Are we sure that was his name and not his full time occupation embroidered in the parka. "Dick"

I'd like to respond to anyone who disagrees by quoting our estimable VP

If it would at least have been a black coat, it would have looked a lot better... Anyway, I'm not terribly bothered by this. Its a lot more important to be warm than to look nice, especially once you reach Cheney's age (137). Still, I find it hard to believe that they couldn't find anything a bit more formal looking.

While a black coat would have been better, but the green coat doesn't really bother me that much. I don't blame him for wanting to be warm.

I think it is just viewed as disrespectful. Though I don't get what's wrong with wearing one of those black wool/cashmere overcoats. I have one and it's extremely warm, moreso than my puffy winter jacket.
Say what you want but the green really brings out his eyes.
And he isn't in favor of the mariage ammendment so you might have a chance.

Act quickly through, he can die at anytime!
